DC Television James Gunn's Suicide Squad’ Spinoff Series ‘Peacemaker’ Starring John Cena on HBO Max

So, are the events of "The Suicide Squad" now considered canon to the new DCU? If that's the case, wouldn't that make it the first official DCU film as well?
Peacemaker S01 and especially Creature Commandos picked up right after The Suicide Squad and mentioned Corto Maltse, Rick Flag Jr, and other elements from The Suicide Squad. It's kinda obvious TSS is canon, there's even nothing to be retconned from that movie (I'm pretty sure Gunn is keeping Margot Robbie around).

Not exactly. Certain events in TSS, such as the scene where we learn that Bloodsport sent Superman to the hospital with a kryptonite bullet, are actually not canon. (FYI, Gunn clarified this detail about Bloodsport during one of the press junkets for Superman.) However, it goes without saying that many other events from the film (e.g., Project Starfish, Rick Flag Jr.'s death at the hands of Peacemaker) do, indeed, carry over into the DCU.

I suppose you could call TSS vaguely canon. I would definitely recommend it to anyone hoping for a more complete experience with Peacemaker, and, to a lesser extent, Superman, which features a cameo from at least one significant TSS character, namely Flo Crawley. Just try to keep in mind that, technically speaking, nothing is officially canon until it's referenced in the new continuity.

Just watched Thunderbolts*. I think I understand the issue that Gunn is going to have with Waller going forward in the DCU. Valentina is a blatant rip off of the Waller character. I get what Gunn means by he has to be careful with the information he releases to the media. Hopefully Gunn can come up with a story line with Amanda that works for the overall DCU.

It doesn't really matter, I think. I don't believe we are getting a Thunderbolts sequel anytime soon, and the MCU is about to reboot in a couple of years anyway, while the DCU is just getting started, Gunn will just proceed like he'd intended imo.

Eh, I wouldn’t really call Valentina a Waller ripoff. Both are manipulative and evil but personality-wise they are very different. I’m not sure how Valentina is in the comics but the movie version feels more like an evil PR executive type who happens to work for the government instead and does terrible things for the good of the brand. Waller, in contrast, feels more like a corrupt government official who will kill anyone to complete the mission.

Thunderbolts is a rip off of the Suicide squad. I thought I was watching a continuation of Task Force X. WB wanted their Sentry to be Black Adam. It’s like Marvel decided to pick up the scraps and make the movie.

But… WB didn’t make Black Adam into the Sentry or the antagonist in any Suicide Squad movie. Whether that was the plan or not, it didn’t happen. So Marvel ripped off a movie that doesn’t exist?

Thunderbolts barely made a profit and it likely a dead franchise. Plus it came out after Waller had already showed up. I dont think it is related at all.

Thunderbolts* was solid but it was a step under The Suicide Squad for me though. King Shark needs a cameo in Peacemaker…….
I like both. One thing is for sire; they were both better than Ayer’s Suicide Squad lol.

I won't call her corrupt, maybe overzealous, overkill, but definitely not crooked. She only ever acted in the interests of her country, no matter how cruel her decisions. Valentina is corrupt, since she put her own personal interests over her government job.

I'd still love to take a look at the Ayer Cut, call it morbid curiosity. Somehow, I still think there's a good movie buried down there. I just don't wanna give up on Ayer, he directed and wrote lots of movies I love (Street Kings, Training Day, End of Watch, Fury)

Well... The joke on my previous post bombed...
... but still not as much as Suicide Squad, am I right ?!

More seriously, I've only seen this movie once since it came out in theaters, and it's really just “a team of criminals hired by a secret agency that goes on a mission.
I mean, that's it. That's the pitch, the synopsis, the script, everything.
It's so hollow. Wasn't a surprise to know Ayer wrote this in three weeks.

First of all Suicide Squad did not bomb...it made $750 million on a $175 million budget. It had the big second week drop (and terrible reviews) but then it had pretty ridiculous legs still have million dollar days well into September. We actually watched it in the SS threads kind of amazed that it had this long life after all the negative press. It finished 10th in the WW box office way ahead of #11 Doctor Strange which had nearly the same budget.

Second I have heard enough about the "Ayer Cut" to know it would have done no better than the original cut. (which I think is ok but not very rewatchable) The problem isn't the tone, the problem is that he made bizarre choices like Letoker. I dont think it was right for WB to screw him like they did, but I dont think his "Edgelord" version makes 3/4 of a billion.

If you want to talk about bombs...check out The Suicide Squad. That film bombed.
