Horror James Wan's "The Conjuring"

The movie is worth the hype guys, really.

Not the scariest movie ever made...but this one's special.

I fully agree. This film pulls no punches but is never gratuitous. It strikes a good balance that I haven't seen in a long time.

How is the intensity in this film? Does it build and build until the credits or does it have peaks and valleys?

It's a consistently increasing slow burn until the final act and that's all I'm saying.

Indeed. Other recent movies, like the Possession last year never really move past the kind of things that make up basically just the first part of this film. It allows for a contrast that really sells the impact.

james wan is probably the best horror director going today he understands tension and characters and not just gore and cheap scares

Even when he's working with gore he doesnt go out of control with it. Looking at the first Saw compared to the others

Will be seeing this movie this week, I can not wait.

Is there anyone else here who liked Dead Silence?

that's the one with the ventriloquists right i remember not caring for it when i saw but i may give it a re watch

I thought Dead Silence was okay, but Wan and Leigh Whannell didn't have full control over it. There were rewrites and bunch of stuff. I haven't seen James Wan talk about it, but Whannell hates it. He made a blog post about it, but I can't post it due to language. Just do a Google search for Leigh Whannell Dud Silence.

I loved Dead Silence, terrific score and scares. Its up there with some of the best horror films in the past decade.

Patrick Wilson appears poised to go mainstream. What do you guys think?

Its not as if he's been confined to obsure indies up to this point.

So this is getting pretty good buzz I take it. I was initially gonna pass on it, since it seemed derivative of a bunch of other horror films that have been released lately, but I think I'll go check this out on Friday.

There have been other movies based on cases involving the Warrens, most recently the Haunting in Connecticut.

Most horror elements have been at play in fiction basically forever. You're better off looking at how well they're employed, and they are quite well used here.
