Horror James Wan's "The Conjuring"

What I like about the possibility of this becoming a series is that the Warrens, who were real life investigators who involved themselves in a number of cases that can be span off or new ones invented wholesale, represent solid protagonists who can be carried over between films. This is contrast to most horror film series where after the first film, the threat or killer is what is carried over with the human characters basically just being meat for the slaughter.

I am sitting in the movies waiting for this to start right now. Will give my thoughts after I get out.

I'm excited to hear what you think!

So is this another posession film or a type of demon film?

Think Insidious meets Amityville Horror. Something like that is the vibe I get. (Funny, i know, its the Insidious director and the real life stories of the investigators of the Amityville case).

Chris Bumbray of joblo.com who loved it by the way and gave it a 8/10 said it was like The Amytiville Horror by way of the Exorcist. He also said it reminded him of the sturdy character-driven horror films of the 70s.

Alright just got back from seeing this at the 8pm showing. Now I really wasn't into to seeing this as it looked like another paranormal activity/ Amityville Horror clone. I am also not really into demon possession flicks, but some friends wanted to see it and the rave reviews swayed me to check it out. After seeing this, I can say its one of the better horror movies to come out in recent years. The first 25-30 mins are pretty dull but once Patrick Wilson's character and his wife come to the families house to investigate, the movie picks up speed in a BIG way.

Without spoiling to much, I will say there are some genuinely creepy and intense moments in this movie. There are a few scenes in the basement that had the hairs on my arm standing up and that rarely happens to me in a horror movie. The jump scares work here and really add to the creepiness of it all. The acting is solid all around, and like a said, once the movie kicks it into gear it doesn't let up until the end credits roll. The best way I can describe this movie is by saying it's the exorcist meets paranormal activity with a dash of Amityville horror.

I give this 3 and half stars outta 5

It should be stated that half of the Joblo crew are alcoholics, & don't know their arse from a hole in the ground. Especially not bumbrains.

Not saying that means its a bad film. Just saying what Jobologna says shouldn't mean sh**.

Liked it alot. Creepy, atmospheric, loved the characters and loved the way the spiritual elements were handled.

Atleast as good as Insidious, if not better.

True they could be the leads on future movies. As this movie ends with them talking about another case. That's only a minor spoiler by the way.

Agreed! I would also recommend seeing this with a crowd. It really adds to the movie.

Well, the reviews are good but I was hoping it was going to have actual demons in it. That's one of the reasons I liked Insidious so much, it actually showed the demon, even though people started making fun of it because of the red face comparison to Darth Maul. I guess I'm just bored with all the demon/exorcism films that don't show the actual demon. I'm a big fan of monster movies and it's always fun to see what kind of designs they come up with for the monster/demon. I definitely want to see this one, but if it's too much like the PA films I'll be a tad disappointed.

I'm also really curious as to why Patrick Wilson is doing so much horror right now. Insidious, Insidious 2 and The Conjuring. I'm just wondering if he really likes horror films or that's all that is coming his way at the moment.

Eh their recreational habits are hardly my concern. That being said, I know alcoholics, and they fall very short of that mark.

As for their reviews, I tend to disagree with Bumbray overall as i think most people do, but Jimmy O and me line up about as much as I do with any other critic so for me its all good.

I saw it a few months ago. Great movie. Reminded me more of Poltergeist and Amittyville than the Exorcist. The film also has a great soundtrack, this song is particular really stood out to me. It was performed by Ryan Gosling as well.

Here's a full review I wrote in case anyone is curious:

I'm really interested with this film, mostly because it's gotten some really good reviews so far.

Doing some reading on it online, I'm very interested in the Warrens. What are people's opinions of them? I know that they were connected to Amityville Horror, which largely seemed to turn out to be a fake, so I've been kind of questioning their legitimacy. Still, if it's a good flick I don't really care about how true it is or not.

I'm almost scared to watch this film , but I'm going to see it tomorrow night. There's already a sequel in development. I wish they waited until after opening weekend to announce that.

I recently saw this film just now with a friend of mine. I'm not going to be the one to spoil it, so I'll just say this: I thought it was good; it's a movie about ghosts, an exorcism, with effective jump scares, and the movie makes you question where it will go and how it will end until it actually does. If that's the movie for you, then you won't feel bad in giving it a shot.

Mr Warren was very religious (Catholic) so he may have been predisposed to believe in this stuff and give explainable things supernatural explanations. I've experienced some stuff myself so I'm not a skeptic just cautious. I want say I believe without a doubt what they say happened just that I believe something might have happened. They could be scam artists as well. We just don't really know. Its not going to change my enjoyment of the film either way. Its just a movie.

Same way with me. I did find it interesting reading up on Amityville Horror though. Still, a good story is a good story, and if the film is good, I'll watch it. It's been a while since I've seen a horror flick I really enjoyed as well.

I'm too skeptical to believe these ghost hunter stories. Also the filmmakers tinker with the story for their own purposes. I always separate a film from the truth and just hope they do a good job with their interpretation.

Yep. Same with me. In terms of how I view a film. I'm open to the possibility of other spirits being out there, but I think you need to view things as a skeptic.

In terms of the Warrens, it was very interesting to see how they reacted to criticism of Amityville, especially since that's pretty much been completely debunked. So it's very possible they could be right old frauds, but it won't lessen my enjoyment of the flick.

Going to attend to a showing in about an hour, I'm very excited about this. Hope it's as good as I've been reading.

The movie was thoroughly entertaining. I'd recommend it. For me to find a modern horror movie that I enjoy is pretty damn rare. But this movie was totally solid. Take squeamish girls and laugh yer ass off at their reactions.

Oh, and here is a website that has some details about the real events which the movie was based on...

I scare easy, I'm on the hype trying to wipe the images away. I was and am terrified. Great movie.

All James Wan movies. So I'm guessing he likes working with Wan. Hope he's in Fast 7.
