Death Race Set in a Prison?
Source: Empire Online
September 11, 2007

Ian McShane talked to Empire Online about Paul W.S. Anderson's Death Race remake at Universal Pictures.

It's a remake of Roger Corman's 1975 classic, Death Race 2000, which starred Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine. The original featured a cross-country car race of the future in which pedestrians were run down for points.

"This is even more violent," said McShane. "This is set in the future, it's like NASCAR to the death inside prison. On TV. And I play the guy who runs the race, coaches the racers, from inside prison. It's a lot of fun."

The movie, which takes place in the year 2020, also stars Jason Statham, Tyrese Gibson and Joan Allen. It is scheduled for a September 26, 2008 release.

Oh God.
Paul W.S. Anderson..............

You know I love his top quality directing, but I love his writing even better.....

I know Paul W. S. Anderson gets a lot of hate but Event Horizon is one of my favourite Sci Fi/Horror films. If he made more movies like that instead of video game garbage like Uwe Bowl I think people would like him more.

1st Crappy Image Reveals Much About Paul W.S. Anderson's DEATH RACE film!!!

Harry here... It's the Holiday time period. Post Christmas.... Pre New Year... I'm in an incredibly good mood... or was. I think I had completely given up on the notion that Paul (worthless ****) Anderson was remaking DEATH RACE... A film that at one point was to be directed by Jan De Bont and had folks like Tom Cruise and Sylvester Stallone rumored to be attached. But then... like a post-apocalyptic cockroach crawling out of the wreckage of eons of development hell imerges... Paul W.S. Anderson... An incredibly nice and charismatic smoldering train wreck of talent.

He has written and is directing this film, that a press release describes as thus:
Genre: Action-Thriller
Cast: Jason Statham, Joan Allen, Tyrese Gibson, Ian McShane
Directed by: Paul W.S. Anderson
Screenplay by: Paul W.S. Anderson
Producers: Jeremy Bolt, Paul W.S. Anderson, Paula Wagner
Executive Producers: Roger Corman, Dennis E. Jones

Jason Statham leads the cast of an action-thriller set in the post-industrial wasteland of tomorrow, with the world’s most brutal sporting event as its backdrop. A penitentiary full of felons has inspired the jailers to create a grisly pastime ripe for lucrative kickbacks. Now, adrenalized inmates, a global audience hungry for televised violence and a spectacular arena come together to form the Death Race.

Three-time speedway champion Jensen Ames (Statham) is an expert at survival in the harsh landscape that has become our country. Just as he thinks he has turned his life around, the ex-con is framed for a gruesome murder he didn’t commit. Forced to don the mask of the mythical driver Frankenstein—a crowd favorite who seems impossible to kill—Ames is given an easy choice by Terminal Island’s warden (Joan Allen): suit up or rot away in a cell.

His face hidden by a metallic mask, one convict will be put through an insane three-day challenge. Ames must survive a gauntlet of the most vicious criminals in the country’s toughest prison to claim the prize of freedom. Driving a monster car outfitted with machine guns, flamethrowers and grenade launchers, one desperate man will destroy anything in his path to win the most twisted spectator sport on Earth.

The most depressing news? We'll get to see Joan Allen in a truly dreadful movie. But then I wonder... can Ian McShane and Jason Statham save this? Well look at the production design and look of the shot below... Every aspect looks like derivative Mad Max bull****. I dare Paul W.S. Anderson to make a great film. Every time out I hope he does it, but instead he continually explosively ****s in the faces of his audience members. He's horrifyingly inept. I pray this is different, but he's inspired no confidence in me.

cool pic... but why does his face look photoshopped in there?

ugh... i hate having to read aicn opinions -_-

Doesn't come out until Sept, gives me plenty of time to revisit the original.

Jason Statham could be in any bad film and still could make it watchable.
:nono: :lmao: :sleepy:

I wont be evil on jason, I think he's okay. He is what he is,and average actor. I think he needs to find some rolls with substance in them instead of the B-list martial arts movies...I thought WAR could of been real good if the freakin final fight with LI was'nt so stupid and a major let down.
I liked the original death race 2000 thought it was very entertaining, and i hope they keep it similar to original.

Awesome! Another Statham film! Love his stuff!

 C'mon now. I hope you didn't think I was serious

I kinda' see Jason Statham as this generation's Charles Bronson.

A trailer will probably be released within the next week or so. I hope so, at least.

Dungeon Siege? :S

I haven't seen In the Name of the King, but Jason Statham might make it watchable. I mean, it had so much star power. It just HAS to be above Sci-Fi channel level bad...

:csad: :down

Was about to post that.

Looks great.
