So glad Jeremy Irons is confirmed to be in Justice League. He was one of my favourite characters in Batman v Superman.
Do you find bigger films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as fulfilling as the smaller projects?
Less so, because theyre so slow. Theres a lot of waiting around and then a huge amount of publicity. One spends 70% of the time doing publicity, 10% of the time filming, and 20% of the time waiting.
I love working with Ben [Affleck] and Zack Snyder. Theyve been fun.
What was your approach to Alfred? He seems more a man of action than previous takes on the character?
I remember an evening with Paul Getty, who was a neighbor of mine, now sadly dead. We drove up to his lovely house. A very nice gentleman opened up the car door. Then another very nice gentleman took the car and parked it somewhere. Another nice gentleman took my coat. And then another nice gentleman gave me a glass of champagne. And all those nice gentleman were SAS. I thought, thats Alfred. Hes a man who will take care of his boss, whether hes making coffee or pouring champagne or flying his airplane.
Will he have more to do in Justice League than he did in Batman v Superman?
Similar, but then, of course, Bens going to make a Batman film next summer. He promises me theres going to be a bit more of Alfred in that. In the Justice League we have seven major lead characters and Im the butler to one of them. Its clear I will not be dominating that film.
Were you upset by the harsh reviews for Batman v Superman?
Not at all. I was very pleased by the numbers. Zack seems to get a hard time from the press, which is strange. I dont know if it has to do with the sort of secrecy that surrounds the making of it all. But the audience liked it, which in the end is all that matters.
Irons said his approach didnt change much despite the negative reception to Batman v Superman because Alfreds supposed to a gentle, English foundation not only for Bruce Wayne aka Batman, but all the superheroes he surrounds himself with.
No, Alfred is a stickler for staying the same. He tries to modulate everybody else. In a very gentle, English way he tries to deal with these people who can do all these extraordinary things in a very calm way, a very grounded way. He does not modulate at all. He sometimes lets Bruce Wayne out a bit on the lead, but hes still attached.
Pretty much Alfred on a nutshell. Irons' portrayal so far has been spot on.
I always liked Irons, so I enjoy his portrayal of Alfred, even though I am not a big fan of this more disheveled aesthetic they went for. Matter of fact, he strikes me more as a groundskeeper than butler.
I'd say he also acts more like a groundskeeper as well what with the wood chopping and all.
Indeed, and living in a trailer and all... I'm pretty sure that's what they were going for, I just prefer more classic, clean-cut Alfred is all.
And damn, why we never get the moustache in live action?![]()
Edit: Love your avatar, by the way.
Thanks, I edited it down as best as I could to fit now if only I could figure out how to do it to the gif of him walking. I like both types equally as they both have their charms, as for moustaches think about this; if you gave not just a moustache but a full (but trimmed) Goatee to Alfred who would he resemble.
It was in reference to RDJ but now that I think about it, add a Goatee and he'd definitely be a less abusive version of that Alfred. He could still get one later on if they feel like shaking things up, a moustache that is.
