Jim Cameron switches gears into the space mining industry (yes, you read that right)

Howso? I have a great passion for art , and do not like to see an artist squandering his talents. As i said, dabble, sure, but not to the extent he has already, that gap between titanic and avatar, going deep sea exploring, too much time away from being an artist.
Hey, as i said already as well, it's up to him, I just wish he would explore these interests, but not at the expense of his art. just my opinion.

It's quite obvious that his deep sea expeditions are also research into making Avatar 2. No doubt he'll draw some inspiration from the uncharted depths, from the landscape and the creatures and put it to use in Avatar 2 which is apparently going to have a lot of underwater scenes. Deep sea is an alien environment at the end of the day.

I really wish you would read my posts properly, so i didn't have to repeat myself...there are not many people in the business who have the skills and resources afforded to them by hollywood to make films on the scale that Cameron does. That is the lack of i bemoan.

I'm not a James Cameron hater by any means, but there lots of directors out there with better "skills" than he possesses, and big budget =\= good movie. In fact it usually makes for the opposite.

I just don't like to see someone's true talent wasted by spending too much time away from it.

and @Eddie Dean, c'mon man, he was doing all that deep seaing in the years between Titanic and Avatar, that was a long time away from the chair, any research for an underwater movie would be a by-product, but aye, hopefully he will get some benefit from that.

He is not a scientist, he could be directing the crap out of movies as opposed to deep sea diving and whatnot. He already wasted over a decade pursuing that which could have easily have been done by others.

And I disagree. I put science ahead of movie making. Everyone that can help advance humanity should be doing so. Cameron is an inventor and scientist as well as a film maker. That combination makes him a valuable asset for the scientific community in getting public opinion on thier side. Cameron has star appeal in his own right.

haha, sorry, he has a similar avatar with a blonde haired dude, and posted on the last page(or that might have been you too, sorry).

Yeah, ok, the recent dive, fine, as I said, I wouldn't bother voicing my opinion if he was just dabbling in this kind of thing, but the fact of him diving during that big gap between Titanic and Avatar always annoyed me because of that waste of talent.
So, y'know, another short tiem spent diving, fine, he worked his ass off on a massive movie, but now, he is spearheading space mining?! what?!!... I feel like Ferris Beuller wanting to give him a kick up the arse!! Cameron!! how much more time are you gonna spend away from movie making? Hopefully nowhere as much as before, i mean, nowhere near.

Is he one of the top scientists in the world? Is he one of the top 100 scientists in the world? top 1000? I doubt he would even be in the top 1,000,000,000 scientists in the world.
Is he one of the top film directors in the world? Yeth!

fine, contribute some dough and ideas, but don't be repeating what you did before, where your filmaking took a huge hiatus at the expense of projects that could have easily been pursued by others.

Well hasn't he been into exploring since he was a young child? Got scuba certified at like 16. It's not like he was just like,

"I'm A FILM MAKER AND THATS IT AND NOW IM MAKING TITANIC AND THINK I MAY GET INTO DEEP SEA DIVING FOR 10 YEARS!!!!!! RAAARRRRR!!!!"

This is obviously something he has a had a passion for, for many many years. I also dislike how you make it appear that his dealings in exploration have not been noteworthy. He and a private group, not government funded, created the machine that made JC the 3rd person to dive to the deepest part of the ocean. And the 1st solo!

Also, he doesn't make movies just for you. He's made enough movies to be able to do what he really wants. And good for him, perhaps he made the movies to fund his first dreams to begin with.

there are other people who can do this stuff, imo, Cameron should be using his talent to make movies, sure, let him dabble in this other Phileus Fog crap, i am fine with him being a dabbler, but imo his talent is being wasted if he lets it deter him from his filmking career.

I'm a huge Cameron-as-a-filmmaker fan. He was my first favorite director. The wait for Avatar was so long and I'm so eager to see the next two.

But if these things get delayed because he wants to push the boundaries of human endeavor, I am 100% behind that. That aspect of his life, the huge respect and support of science, the exploration, the innovation, is one of the main reasons I became infatuated with him, not just because he thought up Terminators. He's a Renaissance Man, not just a filmmaker.

I can't believe there's actually a debate about this. Talk about ridiculous.

I just wish that Cameron would have put aside some movie making time as well in the years bwteen Titanic and Avatar, and hope he does so this time, while he is getting into these other projects.

Well guessing does not really help anyone think you know what you're talking about. Here's the thing though, you keep comparing Rourke and Cameron. While it may not have been the best move for Rourke.......Cameron's decisions are not effecting his career negatively at all. Not only IS HE MAKING HEADLINES with his exploration passions, and more than you're giving him credit for, but he still has 2 of the highest grossing movies of all time. I don't really care about what you think about it, but I do wish you would stop suggesting what Cameron is doing is small potatoes and/or pointless. It's not.

My thoughts exactly. Those guys are charismatic and likeable so why not have them as figure heads to explore the next great frontier.
