EXCLUSIVE: The weekend is already shaping up nicely for Joe Carnahan, the director of the Liam Neeson survival thriller "The Grey" which is poised to take the box-office crown.

Now Carnahan has landed a new gig: He's being hired to write and direct a remake of "Death Wish," the 1974 vigilante picture that helped put Charles Bronson on the map, according to a person familiar with the project who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak about it publicly.

MGM and Paramount are developing the film, which will reboot Michael Winner's box-office hit. The original starred Bronson as Paul Kersey, a liberal architect who morphs into an assassin after his wife and daughter are brutally attacked. Bronson's character then undertakes a one-man mission to hurt and kill a host of criminals on the streets of New York. The movie was a cultural phenomenon of sorts, helping birth the modern action movie and also provoking criticism for its intense violence.

Four sequels were made over the course of the next two decades, with the franchise eventually running out of steam in 1994. Sylvester Stallone came on at one point to attempt a reboot of the original but the project got stuck in development about five years ago.

The new "Death Wish" will be produced by "The Grey" producer Jules Daly along with Ridley and Tony Scott's Scott Free Prods. An MGM spokeswoman and a Carnahan representative did not immediately have a comment.

"The Grey" features an outlaw theme of its own, as a group of survivalists in the Alaskan wilderness must fend off a dangerous pack of wolves. Carnahan previously wrote and directed another notable reboot, "The A-Team," and was also behind the 2006 mob action film "Smokin' Aces" in 2010. Carnahan was also set to direct the upcoming drama "Umbra" before recently falling off.

I actually look forward to this, I'm sure Carnahan can deliver. If he gets Neeson to play Paul Kersey in this that would be badass.

To be honest, I'm a bit dissapointed Carnahan has chosen this as his next project, its not like we need another revenge movie we have plenty of them. I was hoping he would do something with a bit more potential.

Loved Narc and The A-Team, havent seen The Grey yet but will do so was hoping he would do an action movie based on something unknown.

never cared much for the original, but i'm looking forward to this one. it'd be all sorts of awesome if Liam Neeson is cast :awesome:

After The Grey, Carnahan has my undivided attention. I've never much been interested in the original film, but I think Carnahan can deliver something interesting.

If Neeson was chosen for this I'd be stoked...I think he could pull it off so well.

Joe mentioned on twitter that he wants to film Death Wish in LA, in the same vein as Collateral and Drive.

LA does have an unique mystique that New York doesn't have...It could be the juxtaposition between grit and glamor of Hollywood. Let's not forget that more film noir films take place in LA too.

Well, Death Wish 2 does take place in LA.

One through four are definitely worth watching, just for the fact that they seem to get exponentially stupider and crazier with each instalment. You can skip the fifth one.

Plus pre-fame Larry Fishburne and Alex Winter playing punks!

wow wee wow

Which one was the one where Bronson forces a dude to eat his own watch? WTF, that's absurdly funny and awesome. Was that even a Death Watch movie?

Ha ha, I think that's in the immortal Kinkit: Forbidden Subjects.

The ending to Death Wish 4 may be on of the greatest moments ever committed to celluloid.

Liam Neeson would own in this movie if he got it.
But this also better have Jeff Goldblum cameo dying has a thug.

Death Wish 3 is my personal favorite of the series. If this movie is anything like the third one it should be all kinds of awesome. Just get Neeson to play Kersey.

I am interested in this remake. Yeah I remember Jeff Goldblum was in the movie. Haven't seen the movie in a while, didn't the main bad guys get away in the first movie?

It's been forever since I last watched any of the DW movies, I don't even remember the original that well.

surprised no one mentioned this but Carnahan said he is writing this film with Frank Grillo(The Grey,Warrior) in mind

Has it been said if Grillo will be Paul or another character? He seems more suited for a villain, IMO.

Whiskey, the sequels are pretty much standard 80s Action films. The third in particular is almost like an urban version of Commando.

The movies just keep making a reason for Bronson to go on a badass killing spree
I think his whole family is dead by the last one.(extented family cousins paperboy)

It'll be hard to top Bronson in the role but I think Neeson can at least be equal to him in his own way if he gets the part.

i rather not have neeson do this he already did taken and its too much alike! and he is doing taken 2 rather see russell crowe play this type of bad ass!

Normally, I wouldn't see the point. Death Wish has been so endlessly riffed on for decades now. What can anyone bring to it that will be fresh?

But signing Joe Carnahan after he unleashed The Grey on us?

I'm there.

Michael Fassbender would be awesome and a unique slick choice... kind of like an anti-James Bond...

Marina Sirtis from Star Trek:TNG is in Death Wish 3 as a woman getting raped and Danny Trejo has a small scene in DW4.
