John Hillcoat and Shia LaBeouf were talking about working together earlier this year when The Promised Land, based on the novel The Wettest County in the World seemed like a going concern, before it went to pieces. Now the two are evidently interested in a crime drama spec script called Triple Nine.

The Wrap says the two are circling the script by Matt Cooke, which Steve Golin is attached to produce. The story “concerns a group of crooked cops planning a major heist who realize they must shoot one of their own in order to get away with it. The lead character is an upstanding young officer who they choose as their victim.” (Kinda like that scene in Alien Resurrection where a couple jailed aliens kill one of their own to break out. OK, not exactly like that.)

Warner Bros. is reportedly in talks to take on the project, and it would certainly fit in with some of the pedigreed yet pulpy stuff the studio has done in the last few years. Chris Pine is also said to be interested in the film.

Love the concept and it could be a good role for Shia to transition into more mature fare.

Waltz, Blanchett, Affleck, Ejiofor, and Jordan?! :wow:

Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael B. Jordan in Talks to Star in ‘Triple Nine’ (Exclusive)

John Hillcoat’s crime drama is also expected to co-star Christoph Waltz and Cate Blanchett

John Hillcoat’s “Triple Nine” is lining up an all-star cast of this year’s award contenders, with Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael B. Jordan in talks to star alongside Christoph Waltz and Cate Blanchett, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

Affleck is nearing a deal to replace Charlie Hunnam as the lead in the Megan Ellison-financed crime thriller, which is being produced by Anonymous Content.

Story follows a group of thieves who plan to kill a young LAPD cop to divert the police away from a daring heist they’re perpetrating across town.

The title “Triple Nine” refers to police code indicating that an officer needs immediate assistance.

Affleck will play the targeted officer, while Ejiofor is engaging on an offer to play a career criminal who masterminds the heist. Jordan is in talks to play a street-wise cop in Ejiofor’s gang who partners with Affleck and plans to set him up.

Anonymous Content’s Keith Redmon, Bard Dorros and Steve Golin are producing the movie, which Ellison is financing through her Panorama Media banner. Hillcoat (“The Road”) is directing from a script by Matt Cook.

The long-gestating project, which Hillcoat’s “Lawless” star Shia LaBeouf was once attached to, is expected to start production next year.

It has been an exciting week for Ejiofor, who received Golden Globe and SAG nominations for his devastating performance in “12 Years a Slave.”

Affleck is in the awards conversation thanks to his supporting performance as Christian Bale’s younger brother in “Out of the Furnace.”

Jordan was unfairly overlooked by Golden Globes voters, as his harrowing performance in “Fruitvale Station” has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.

That's a hell of a cast and it sounds quite interesting.

It does suck that Jordan got overlooked for the Golden Globes. Then again, it's the Golden Globes. for the crap the Oscars gets, it's still way better than the Globes.

There is not one actor in that lineup that should cause someone to say "I don't wanna see this." It's that impressive.

Good to see this moving forward, Casey Affleck is a good choice for the lead role.

Blanchett is out. Kate Winslet, Aaron Paul, Teresa Palmer, and Gal Gadot joins:

Fruitvale Station’s Michael B. Jordan, Breaking Bad and Need For Speed‘s Aaron Paul, Warm Bodies’ Teresa Palmer, Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman in the Batman Vs. Superman film) and End Of Watch‘s Michael Pena are in talks to joined previously announced 12 Years A Slave‘s Chiwetel Ejiofor, Out of the Furnace’s Casey Affleck and Kate Winslet.

Wow. This sounds better and better everytime there's a casting announcement.

whoever (s)he is, aaron pauls agent is doing one helluva job.

Aww man, Michael Pena as a cop again? I'm barely over End of Watch :(

In TRIPLE NINE, a crew of dirty cops is blackmailed by the Russian mob to execute a virtually impossible heist and the only way to pull it off is to manufacture a 999, police code for “officer down.” Their plan is turned upside down when the unsuspecting rookie they set up to die foils the attack, triggering a breakneck action-packed finale tangled with double-crosses, greed and revenge.
Triple 9 opens on February 19th, 2016.

Trailer was pretty awesome. Reminds me of Heat so I'll check it out.
