John Mayers

Someone please tell me what was so relatable about John Myers that made him such a good character.

No one went to see Hellboy for that dumb actor that doesn't do jack at all anymore.

Sometimes you sound like a 12 year old.

I didn't hate Myer's, but I didn't really like him either. He helped in letting new comers to the Hellboy universe get initiated into it along with someone within the movie who was new to it, and he did help ground the film. Because of him being someone from the outside and discovering Hellboy it made the BPRD seem more plausible. However, one thing I did hate was them having Hellboy hidden from the public.

Why have Meyers come back? It's not like he's essential to the franchise.

Well the first movie wasn't that big initially. So he didn't do well in serving this purpose.

I think that he's not even in the second movie proves he was useless and pointless. If he was that important to the audience, shouldn't he have come back?

He was relateable in the sense that he, like myself was a newcomer to the Hellboy universe and was figuring everything out along the way....as was I while watching the movie for the first time.

On a side note, seriously...why so much hate for the character? I mean granted you feel he was useless but damn, you make it seem like it was personal.

He was just a symbol of unnecessary studio input.

True. But it worked well enough.

At least for me...

Exactly. My dislike stems from people still seem to continue trying to defend the character. When the sequel pretty much proves how bad he was.

My problem was that Del Toro tried and failed to make him so integral to the story. I didn't like this dumb character having such a big impact on the story when Abe Sapien became totally irrelevant. And Bruttenholm brings this Myers schmuck in to essentially be Bruttenholm's own replacement. He's pure of heart yadda yadda yadda. He falls in love with Liz Sherman from watching her confessional video. It felt like a hilarious joke that Del Toro wasn't getting. OK so he's Bruttenholm's replacement to help guide Hellboy on the wrong path and babysit him. ********. Hellboy doesn't need a babysitter. He doesn't need people to cook his food. And he has his own moral compass.

OK so he's Bruttenholm's replacement and he's gone between movies. Pointless.

My other problem was that Del Toro publically talked about how important the relationship between Hellboy and Bruttenholm was, but then you waste all this time with Bruttenholm and Myers instead of Bruttenholm and Hellboy. Bad narrative economy.

It's fine though because Myers is gone in the second movie. So there.
