The Dark Knight Joker Scars: Accidental; self inflicted?

My cousin told me that he read this somewhere. (I've searched everywhere and I can't find anything about it.) That someone killed the Joker's parents while he watched it and to prevent him from screaming they slit his cheeks so if he opened his mouth to scream and call for help it would make the incision bigger. <---I think thats really crazy/amazing and I looked all over for it and since this thread is around I take it my cousin made it all up. Sucks because it sounds pretty good IMO. Sounds like it would fit our crazy Joker.

Too bad they won't show and probably wont tell how he got them :csad:

i thought it was confirmed to be razor blades? didnt i dead that somewhere?

It was rumored awhile back, but in a recent interview costume designer Lindy Hemming said that Joker has the scars from the beginning of the movie.

“We find [the Joker] dressed like this [when he first appears in the film],” says Hemming. “You can assume that he might’ve been dressed like that for years. He may have always been wearing those clothes. Instead of putting them on like the Joker has done before, you find him wearing these. He’s already scarred in the film, so the makeup comes from what he does to enhance that rather than to look like a clown

Nolan has also said there will be no backstory, so I guess we will never know how he got the scars.

Its probably not going to even explain how he got the scares

he must be using a single blad bic :)

i remember someone in the cast commented on it in a magazine or something...saying they were caused by razorblades...now whether thats in the movie or not, i doubt it. but it could be referenced to in about 4 seconds of the movie.

I've been "lingering" around the site for quite some time now and have always thought that this was a really good question. I doubt we will actually see how the scars came to be because he is being billed as an "absolute" in the film. I think the scars being "self-inflicted" though would really add to the persona of the character. That would scream crazy! :cwink:

i still like the accidental scar first and then the self inflicted scar later to even out the two

I'm glad none of this backstory is being dealt with in the film. There's no need to rationalise the Joker nor to understand "why?".

Exactly. He just "IS" and that is perfectly fine with me.

the jokers insanity is supposed to come from a mix of an already unstable mind, and a freak accident resulting in the permanant disfigurment in his appearance (perma white in the comics, obviously) so im going with accident.

If they aren't going to do the falling into a tank of chemicals, I want the chelsea grin to be Batman's fault. Gotta keep to the fact that Batman created the Joker.
I'm a fan of him beating down a few thugs and accidently slices on in the mouth with his gauntlet.
But, if you go with Batman: Confidential, Batman DOES INDEED Batarang that mofo's face.

Yeah that's true. But there is alot of backstory to pull from. It most likely will not be explained one way or the other. It really isn't necessary to. Everything that Batman stands for created The Joker. You can't have one without the other. They are the Yin and Yang of the comic book universe.

for as...bland as Batman confidential was...the beginning of the arc with the smile being batman's fault was actually...interesting. for anyone with a "mad-on" for a back story, check it out.

ew.. sad scared batman who calls a hitman to kill the Joker; bleh.. I did like the part when joker is all like a clown and the little girl is like " spray my dad" and Joker is like, alright you can tell the therapist you chose your dad.

agreed...as well as realizing his "new world" while talking to a corpse...mmm happiness.

that is probably a better interpretation of The joker like deadly plans, pranks wise; I didn't like the art or who he was before he was Joker...

I don't necessarily see how Bats reaction was such a bad thing. I'm pretty sure that's a theme TDK will play heavily on, too.

Fact is, Joker is a force of nature that Bruce didn't expect at all, so it's understood why he'd be so confused during their first few meet-ups.

As for the origin, I honestly didn't mind it. Yes, Joker's history has always been referred to as ambiguous. But for a character who we're not supposed to know before the clown facade, he's had quite a few origins ironically enough.

I always preferred a pre-Joker who was always a little screwed up in the head. Never made sense to me for one terrible accident to completely do a 180 on a person's psyche. Adding in the hitman element and compulsion for daredevil acts, helped develop the character and explain his trademark behavior.

I've been wondering about how they're going to play on the "joker's gas" aspect. You know, the one that gives everyone a smile. Does he get it from Crane, as I've heard, or does he just cut a chelsea grin into their face? I mean is this gonna be PG13 or R?

That's a good question. It won't be rated "R" but it isn't exactly geared towards kids either.
