The Dark Knight Joker Scars: Accidental; self inflicted?

Yea I don't think it's to do with Gambol. He was just pissed off because he didn't like the fact that a "freak" could steal his money and just walk away.

I still think the left scar was a result of a "fish-hook". It looks all pulled back and puckered. Like someone just pulled the corner of his mouth untill it ripped, Gangs of New York style.

well joker did call him names and say stuff about his mom or grandmother

That's because Gambol called him a freak and sent one of his boys to rip his head off. Gambol started it! :oldrazz:

When The Joker tells the "Father" story, he is talking about God.

=]

I think the scars were definitely self inflicted, or if they aren't, the Joker probably doesn't even remember what happened because his mind is so far gone.

The left scar was wider than the right i think, so i do believe the right scar was self-inflicted but he got the elft one from a gunshot or fishook as Ace suggested.

I think it's more likely he got them both at the same time, because they are pretty much parrallel. I'm watching the movie and the left side is only slightly larger, but not by a lot.

they were accidentally self inflicted. but in all seriousness im gonna stick with they story that his dad did it. he presented that better. WHY SO SERIOUS!??!

Maybe he attempted suicide and ended up blowing out one cheek, and carved up the other one so it'd match.

Has anyone seen that official screensaver of all the cards falling down over a picture of Batman? Then there is a spray of blood in the shape of a smile that drips over it and a scapel is dropped. Suggests to me that Joker did it himself. But that is just a screensaver

Ive seen it and thats not a bad ideal...Kind of cool if he did himself. Other then that I believe it was his father who did the deed one night he got really drunk... **** happens when you party drunk...:hehe:

I got the distinct impression, and I have since before the film even came out, that the mob had a hand in his scarring. The "Glasgow Grin" is a method used almost exclusively by gangs and criminals. And given the film's mob-heavy plot, as well as the Joker's own hints ("Go back to ripping off mob dealers? No, no..."), it doesn't seem unlikely at all. Also, there's his apparent immense knowledge of organized crime.

My idea of the Joker before his transformation is of a wily, relatively unkown criminal who's too clever for his own good. He rips off the wrong gangbanger, and they have him cut up and left for dead.

That's what I always thought too.

Sure his father was a "drinker and a fiend" abusing him as a child all the while witnessing his mom getting the same. Also that he was married later in life too. But he got in too deep with the wrong mobster 'cause of a gambling debt (being a non-connected crook already). So said mobster taught him a lesson and cut up his face. Then his wife "couldn't stand the sight of" him and left him.

Everything added up and he became the Joker. His agenda of taking down the mob is akin to Batman's reasoning but operating from an opposite manner. Two sides of the same coin or however you put it.

Oh yeah, I forgot I thought about that--even wrote a fic on it (before the movie came out).

I think the make-up artists said that was the story they had in mind when they designed his scars. They also thought of him as being virtually a vagrant. :funny:

I think he was yawning one morning and opened his mouth a little too wide.

A split lip can be a b**ch.

I tend to believe it was done to him. I dont think he had the Joker persona before only after once his mind had completely broken down. He saw the shape it reminded him of a large smile like clowns have, boom he dresses like one.

people almost never just "snap": psychopathy and sadism are slow, gradual processes that start in childhood
