In the sides, when Joker is interrogating the batman wannabe, the dialogue along with the "LOOK AT ME!" line leads me to believe that joker somehow blames batman for his appearance, in which it is only rational to assume that they are not self-inflicted.

An important aspect of the joker character is his vanity, and having them as self-inflicted would change alot of the basic psychology of the character.

A zip-line accident sounds like early rumblings of what has hopefully become now a more refined method to joker becoming scarred and establishing his hatred/fascination/obsession with batman.

I believe in context it was more like "why do you admire/ape batman? look at what he's done to my face!"

Though I could be mistaken.

If someone could post the actual side we could speculate further.

Remember when someone would say something bad about the Joker's look, someone would say "but Heath's gonna be a great Joker", it was a nod to that................but I do think Heath will be the best at portraying the Joker, just because he's a more well-rounded actor, and is a lot like Bale in how he takes his roles so seriously.

Vanity could just as easily be the reason for scarring himself, he has his own sense of style. Sort of reminds me of Jack's artistic efforts in B89

Again, I hope we never find out either way whether they're self-inflicted or accidental. He should just have the scars already, right from the beginning of the film.

Wasn't it said when the suit that was relesed that the blades on his forearms will now shoot? Couldn't these new weapons play a role in scarring the joker?

remember though, the new suit isn't going to come into play until later in the film, maybe halfway. judging by how much is going on, i'm thinking the joker will be the joker by then.
