So, am I one of the few people who didn't like this movie?
I went and saw it last night with my friend. The trailers never did anything for me but then again, neither did the trailers for Interstellar and that film blew me away. I thought maybe, just maybe, this would do the same. After seeing the scores, word of mouth and just overall hype behind this film, I figured there would be something incredible here.
I went in with an open mind, having love of Jordan Peele's comedic work and just...was let down immensely. I never thought the film was scary or "unnerving" as people claim it to be. The "brain washed performances" got a lot of laughs in the theater which, in turn, made them cringe worthy for me.
The main character, Chris, was my favorite part. When he was getting hypnotized, that was honestly my favorite part. The acting was absolutely phenomenal and I hope he gets more roles.
For his directoral debut, I have to say, Peele managed some beautiful shots, great music selection and his comedy was, as always, gold. Unfortunately though, as stated above, I felt the "horror/thriller" aspect of the film fell flat. My friend said it best, it's basically a "stepford wives" type movie.
The plot, in my eyes, was predictable and my friend and I were guessing all of the twists before they happened. It was amusing to hear people gasping and freaking out as they unfolded but also left me a bit envious, I love that feeling in films.
Overall, I feel like this movie is the "It Follows" of 2017 for me. Incredible word of mouth/hype and I was left wanting something more.
