Just bought a DS

They should bring Punch Out to the DS also now, and have you use your left and right fingers on the touch screen as Little Mac's hands.

If you get it off of eBay, make sure it isn't a bootleg. I ordered Mario vs Donkey Kong (fun puzzle game) off eBay and it was a bootleg.
I'm just getting the DS itself on eBay, and the one I'm bidding on specifies that it's new and factory sealed. I'm getting all the games via Gamefly. I stopped buying games a while ago, since I'm never interested in multiplayer or replaying the same game twice. I just spent a good four hours combing through Gamefly's catalog of DS games and adding stuff. So far I have:

Gunstar Super Heroes (GBA)
Hotel Dusk: Room 215
Chrono Trigger
Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
New Super Mario Bros.
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Retro Game Challenge
Trauma Center: Under the Knife
Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars
Dragon Ball: Origins
Sonic Rush
Lost in Blue
TMNT (GBA)
Justice League Heroes: The Flash (GBA)
Super Mario 64 DS

^Gamefly doesn't have the DS version of TMNT? Or is that the game based on the 2K3 series?

It's the movie game. They do have the DS version, but I looked both up on Gamespot and found that the DS version is some kind of terrible-looking 3D fighter while the GBA version is a 2D fighter that looks like the spiritual sequel to the TMNT arcade games. Since I loved those arcade games (bought the first on XBLA), I went with the GBA one.

Ah, I see:yay:

I don't have a DS or anything Corp, but one game I got to play that I really enjoyed was The World Ends With You. At first it's kind of a trip because you're doing combat on both the top and bottom screen (one with the D-Pad & buttons, the other with the stylus), but once you get use to it's quite fun

Enjoyable story, too. It kind of starts out on a generic note (The whole amnesia ridden protagonist), but it gets better. I dug the music, too. I really liked it a lot, if I had a DS it'd be the top of my list

My only gripe with it was fighting Bowser; it was a pain in the ass. You really need an analog stick to spin him around and throw him accurately. It's only bad in the last fight though, the other two were alright.

How good is Super Mario 64 DS?
It's good for what it is. I agree with other posters that you do need the analog for some things, but playing as Wario through bits and pieces is pretty fun too.

I wonder why they haven't included an analog stick with any of the updated DS models. You'd think it's a no-brainer given analog sticks' prominence in modern gaming.

I've seen it and it seemed a little too JRPG-ish to me. I'm really, really not a fan of JRPGs once you get out of the 16-bit era (you know, back when you couldn't really distinguish art styles enough to tell what was anime-influenced and what wasn't). I may give it a try on my second wave of rentals, though. It does seem to get incredibly high reviews everywhere.

Can't have an analog stick with the clamshell design (at least a good one). SM64DS is the only DS game I know of that needs an analog stick, and that's only for the 3 Bowser fights. Every other DS game I've played has been fine with the D-pad. It helps that Nintendo has the best D-pad.

True, they've been perfecting it since the original NES, after all. I'm looking forward to trying some games with the DS' stylus.

Star Fox Command uses the stylus. It's the best SF game since 64.

Well, yeah I guess if you hate JRPGs for that then you probably won't like it. It's artstyle is somewhat anime-ish, it kind of has it's own little style to it so it's not like purely influenced by it I don't think, but it definitely draws from it.

It's not just the art style. It's all the familiar tropes from JRPGs: effeminate, angsty protagonist, silly hair, oversized weapons, the Japanese propensity to shoehorn cuteness and silly jokes that usually aren't funny into everything, etc.

Well, there aren't traditional weapons in the game, all your abilities come from pins you collect so no worry there. Though, I guess never mind, I get the cuteness and angsty thing, but I'm not sure what you mean by the jokes thing. It'll probably end up being something you wouldn't enjoy

After about 2 weeks of fruitless bidding and watching on eBay, my friend said he'd sell me his DS Lite for $65 (half the price of a new one, which is cheaper than what virtually all of the used ones I saw on eBay wound up going for). The downside is that it's plain ol' white--I wanted the cobalt blue/black one. But that's a ridiculously minor problem with an otherwise great deal.

So, how is the original DS? I was just wondering because I was thinking of getting a DS and I've found that eBay bidding on the regular DS is cheaper then the Lite and DSi.

No clue. I'm enjoying my Lite, though. I lost a good hour and a half on Sonic Chronicles because I got too complacent and forgot to save for a while and then I stumbled into an ungodly difficult fight with two giant eagle things, though. That pissed me off enough that I didn't play it for like a day. :csad:

Regular DS is fine. I have the red one that came with Mario Kart. I actually prefer it b/c GBA games don't stick unlike with the Lite.

I've had that happen to me in games before.

That game was actually one of the reasons I was thinking of maybe getting a DS. I'm not a huge handheld fan, but there's a lot of stuff on the DS that are interesting to me. To be honest I don't want to spend a whole lot into as I know I won't use it that much. Looks like I can get an original DS on eBay for around the $40-60 dollar range and the Lite is more around the $80-100 range. So, I just thought I would ask about it

I had heard that the screen for the Lite was significantly more brighter then the regular. Is that ever a problem for yourself?

^It is much brighter. It's much better for your eyes and, generally, I found games on the old DS too dark.
