From the Risky Biz Blog Comic-Con coverage:

July 23, 2006

Gregory Noveck, senior vp of creative affairs at DC Comics, which is owned by Warner Bros., talked about protecting DC characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and The Flash in Hollywood. And he squashed any hopes that a Justice League of America movie starring the likes of Christian Bale and Brandon Routh will ever happen. "There are some huge obstacles economically," he said. "How many 800-pound gorillas can dance on the head of a pin?" What he could announce, he said, was a series of DC homevideo animated features from the pages of Superman, Doomsday and Teen Titans "targeted at the core fan base, written by Marv Wolfman and Tom DeSanto, in the art style of the original books, not dumbed down for kids."

Good. I get the feeling these teamup films are totally insane ideas. ;)

a Justice League movie should be like my Secret Wars movie: a DC Movie crossover featuring the latest DC Movie heroes teaming up to fight crime.

And thus far, we only have Batman and Superman (John Constantine and V don't count because they are Vertigo).

So, first they have to make a Wonder Woman movie, a Green Lantern movie, a Captain Marvel movie, an Aquaman movie and MAYBE that Deadman movie they are planning.

THEN, when they have more than two superheroes, then they can makea Justice League movie.

So they'll make Doom Patrol and Deadman but won't shell out the money for JLA? Oooookay. :down:rolleyes:

Wow. They even greenlighted a Watchmen movie, cmon.

How hard is it to make a film with 7 Superheroes?! Look how many were in X2.

What an idiot.

not really mystery men (dark house) became a pretty good film

Keep them in animation. That way they could do anything with less the amount of money.

Mystery Men didn't use actors in high-paying deals, Mystery Men didn't balance Movie-making schedules of 4-5 busy actors. Mystery Men didn't have NEAR the special effects budget for a JLA live action movie... Mystery Men didn't need to justify a high budget...

If you want to see a JLA film with little action, low level action and seven unknown actors (that are not Routh, Bale or WhedonWoman), then they can do a JLA movie right now, however, if you want a REAL JLA movie, if you want Routh and Bale invovled, then you need to hand WB about 200 Million Dollars... I think they'd be good for the other $200 Million.

It's easy to say "Oh, they could do it..." but if you don't know why they can't, then, just maybe, the guys at WB know more about what it takes to make a JLA movie than you do...

Edit:
That doesn't mean it's not fun to talk about an imagine... who knows... maybe one day...

Deadman and Doom Patrol= Much cheaper to do than JLA. JLA would probably cost more than deadman and dp combined.

common sense, people.

Funny...I don't recall any Deadman casting threads...or Doom Patrol for that matter. The fans want a Justice League movie and instead they are taking the Marvel route and gearing up for a multitude of forgettable projects of dubious viability.

Sure, you could do a half dozen of those type of movies for the price of a Justice League movie but how much are they expecting for a return on their investment?

people are gonna have to realize that...this movie aint happening. and if JL does happen, it wont be the way fanboys want. No way are WB gonna waste money to get both routh, bale, whoe'vers playing WW, Flash, and GL to come back and team up together. A movie with superman alone costs 200 mill, what makes you think a JL film would be cheaper? DP and Deadman will be cheaper and more profitable than a JL film.

Well based on the big two, they're getting 100-200 M in profit per picture. They'll probably keep expecting numbers like that. Unless they're making 100M in pure profit for each starring character (an unlikely feat involving about two billion dollars returns), they're better off doing individual franchises.

Though, if they made a big JLA movie right they might be able to pull something like that off...

"Probably?" Gathering DC's most iconic heroes, into one film? Of course it's going to cost more.

JLA aint happening. NEVER. EVER.

It would be a mess also and send DC back to the crapper.

First Just wait for Flash, WW, Green Lantern etc.

Depends on how much star power it would require. I imagine if it were just Routh and Bale you might be able to pull it off (Heck if Jackman and Bale can share the screen). However when you throw Reynolds and possibly two or three other big name heroes in the mix, you have problems.

Furthermore it would be a hard movie to plot, tying several movie verses together.

DC was never THAT bad. Except for Catwoman and B&R.

instead of waiting for GL, Flash, and MM's own movieverses, take Routh, Bale, and whoever's WW, and introduce all of them first in JLA, then have them do their own movies...It'd be the same thing as how they're bringing Silver Surfer into Moviedom in the Fantastic Four movie.

Yes, that would be wicked. I personally dont think WW can even sell her own film.

Flash and GL have the only potential for major money makers in their individual franchaises.

Because it would feel more epic if the public knew who those characters were, saw them fight on their own and then team up together.

Marvel is doing the same thing with the Avengers by having Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, and Black Panther having their own movies and sequels first before the Avengers movie is made.

It feels cooler to see all the heroes who have already established their coolness team-up together.

The Silver Surfer was always meant to be a spin-off character considering that he originally was a Fantastic Four villain.

Actually, it could be pulled off.....You would have to keep the nuber of group shots to a bare minimum, divide them into teams, use less than The Original Seven(No Aquaman or Martian Manhunters; Supes, Batty, Wondy, Flash and GL. Maybe one more but that would be pushing it.), have a very well thought out plot(maybe a scaled down COIE?) and nail the villain casting(no Brokebat casting here!)!!!!!!!

maybe they should start with a JL animated movie first, like what they did for Batman: MAsk of the Phantasm. if that does well with both the kid and adult crowd that should make some way for a live action JL movie.

but again, as i mentioned in countless other threads before, the cost will be the biggest hurdle a live action JL movie will have. movie making is still a biz, and the bottom line is still a studio's top priority.
