Report: Karl Rove announces exit

(CNN) -- Karl Rove, U.S. President George W. Bush's senior political adviser, is to resign at the end of August, according to a newspaper interview published Monday.

Rove, who has held a top position in the White House since Bush took office in 2001, told the Wall Street Journal he would stand down on August 31.

"I just think it's time," Rove said, according to the paper. "There's always something that can keep you here, and as much as I'd like to be here, I've got to do this for the sake of my family."

He allegedly helped Scooter Libby and others out a CIA operative because her husband said the Iraq war was a crock. This is an activity that former CIA director George HW Bush called treasonous.

Oh, that's gotta be nonsense.

I think he's bailing as Bush's numbers are starting to slightly improve, as Congresses' numbers decline, and so he's no longer a talking point for the Dems as the election races heat up. This is all about the GOP looking for whatever tiny bit of momentum they can get.

Edit: Another thought is that this is a preemptive move because some other scandal involving Rove is about to erupt...
