We had our chance and we "blew it?" We didn't "blow it," for the most part our abandonment of that word was done out of an apparent societal evolution towards "tolerance." It's just surprising to us that blacks haven't abandoned it as well. That's all.

Listen, I don't want to use that word, and I honestly don't care if blacks use it towards each other.

Just know that it's very, very hard for any thinking white person to respect a black person who uses that word towards another. To many, it makes us think "If you don't respect yourself, why should I respect you?"

Once I and other black folk see a whole bunch of other white people calling each OTHER (meaning other WHITE PEOPLE) that WORD. I don't think we will have a problem with the word any longer.

Deny it, but you have probably never had anyone say that to you, so of course you will deny it. And, I would bet you wouldn't want anyone to call you that.

That is what disconnects you (white people) from using that word. That is also why only black people can use it.

You say it's self-deprecating because it means only one thing to you. The context of the word has evolved over time and has become a way to bond and connect to others who are in the same position. Like when gay person calls another gay a "***". To an outsider it may seam "self-deprecating" but to someone in the gay community it's a way to OWN that word and it's power.

I support AA because if we live in the same communities and work together on a daily basis than whites and blacks get to know each other and that's when people realize were no different.
