I know some of ya'll will complain about me starting a new thread... but after seeing this in today's news:

Calif. sues carmakers over global warming
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060920/bs_nm/environment_autos_dc_13

I thought a discussion about some of the topics the original Transformers touched upon and how this movie completely ignores them in a day and age where they seem MORE relevant (considering what's going on in the Middle East, the energy crisis, etc.) would be nice.

I know Transformers was not Capt Planet... but it can't be denied that the overriding theme of the original cartoon was Earth as a source of energy and Decepticons pillaging it (thus destroying it)... not the Quest for The Holy Grail.

Anyone else besides me think that Transformers the movie should... I dunno... be a bit more about something?

When did the movie come out????

Pretty much when the whole script was leaked and even before then when the plot was revealed.

Come on be serious. We know the movie isn't out. But we have more than enough information to discuss it.

from an old leaked script?????

Yes. Unless you firmly believe that they REWROTE the whole thing and changed the ENTIRE PLOT. And, if you do, let us know how you know that.

[edit]
And don't make it sound like the script is years old. You know its not.

As much as relevancy can add to a film, it can also seriously detract or encourage flaming and negative discussion/publicity.

Look at TomKat with MI:III, WOTW, and even BB to an extent.
Look at the non-issue issue about the lack of "American Way" in SR.

They would find a way to spin it into propaganda...
Besides, you'd also have to count on the writers to not make it too preachy, and for some Hollywood types the urge to be too preachy is strong.

All that is true. But it can also be handled in a subtle way that is not preachy. So far it seems that this movie is about everything that the original was AGAINST. The human military kicks ass, the star is a muscle car gas guzzler, the robots apparently have limitless energy as the Natural Resources plot is not touched upon.

Capt Planet it was not. But the subtext was there throughtout the life of the entire series. All you had to do was watch one of the scenes where the Decepticons got drunk off of Energon to see it. :yay:

Well clearly that's the case, and I see what you're sayin...but remember it IS Michael Bay...relevancy never plays a part in his movies...just big BOOMS...[shrug] sad but true...

Except with The Island. That gave me high hopes that Bay was finally putting more into his movies than meaningless fluff. But alas!, he's taken a step backward if all is true.

I wish the military wasn't involved at all. Problem is as soon you have giant robots coming to earth you have to involve the military because thats what would happen in real life. No government is going to allow giant alien robots roam around without mobilizing their defenses regardless of their intentions. And of course our military is not going to cooperate for the movie unless they know they'll be made to look good.

Yeah you keep telling yourself that a script marked a few months before filming started is years old:up: Whatever helps you sleep at night. A script you also won't read but still still argue about.

The military gets its ass kicked in TRANSFORMERS. A few of them do defeat some of the Decepticons. But for the most part, the military is in over its head in the script. What should the military be played as? A pushover?

What's TRANSFORMERS about?

"Transformers: more than meets the eye".

The main theme seems to be rising above what others think is capable of us. And the struggle for power, and those who would protect it, not pervert it.

So Bumblebee being a "gas guzzler" is an issue now? What the hell was Optimus Prime's semi in the original, then? I suppose a semi is the most conservation-friendly vehicle there is, right? The themes in the original Transformers were there...but they weren't that deep.

yeah cause we all learned as kids to preseve our natural resources and stop global warming..........all thanks to the chaotic battles of the giant robots that smash things.

i learned even more from power rangers, and TMNT.....

yes because no movie has ever rewritten the script while filming...cough cough Jaws cough cough......I dont argue about the script except what the makers of the movie have said. It's an old script. So who should I believe...the guys who are writing this movie or some dude on this message board who seems to have a grudge against Bay

I spent a whole year praying that the X3 script would have significant changes made to it and look how that ended up. Tom Rothman and everyone else involved with the production of X3 lied about the numerous changes made to the leaked script when in reality they barely changed a thing. Therefore, I doubt any significant changes will be made to the transformers script. I still have faith that Speilberg will save this movie.

Keep the faith brother, keep the faith. :cwink:

Please, the last thing this movie needs is the Spielberg "20-minute ending." And considering the lame that was WOTW, I'd rather have Bay directing my big f--king robots than Spielberg.

Name me a director that has directed and produced more blockbuster films than Speilberg.

What the heck kind of point is that?

You're the one who said you have a problem with speilberg movies despite the fact that he is considered to be one of the best directors/producers of all time. If you don't understand my point by now then there is no reason to continue this conversation.
