LAIKA's next is "Kubo the Two Strings"

I'd seen this trailer and tbh it didn't really interest me. But I saw it again in theaters recently and it just clicked. This looks awesome.

disappointed to find out that Kubo is not voiced by an asian boy. Disney did a great job with Moana

EDIT: What in the... I must've copied the wrong Youtube link. Nevermind. The hell was that crap. :funny:

And more specifically with Big Hero 6.
An easily avoided misstep on their part I'd say. It's not like the actor they chose is some kind of big draw or something.

I don't see who the audience is for this. While visually it's beautiful I found the trailer lacking. No I don't need pop culture jokes and wacky sidekicks in my animated films, but they shouldn't be snooze fests either.

I'm gonna try to see this in the theater. I love anything LAIKA puts out.

Yep, that's the featurette that I spectacularly failed to post earlier. XD

I don't see who the audience is for this.
Looking at the tepid box-office performances of their previous releases... a relatively small one, I'd say. The problem is, I'm not sure that even the people at Laika can do anything about it. Their movies just don't seem to appeal to mass audiences.

This is pretty cool. An interactive map of Kubo's realm, with some new footage.

I'm not sure what leads you to think this is a snooze fest. It's an action adventure not Anomalisa.

I love Laika, and considering how much I love samurai flicks and the supernatural, this looks perfect to me. It might just be me and my brother in the theater, but we will be there.

Please, Kubo, close out this summer with a bang. Its been a mixed bag.

I remember seeing Coraline opening weekend and it wasn't a big draw, but once the word got out I could barely find two seats together at my second viewing. I also didn't think I'd like Paranorman, but that movie gets me in the feels every single time.

Loved it from the first trailer I saw, really hoping it's good!

I'm excited to see this with the youngster.

Disappointing Henry Selick parted with ways with Laika. And hasn't done a damn thing since Coraline. That Shadow King movie sounded like a neat idea.

He could do more live action, but....

The shadow king situation was so sad. Two years of work and Disney pulled the plug. So e German finances stepped in at some point but I think it fell through. He had another project at some point but he stepped away when his mom got sick the last I heard. The latest ice seen was last fall when it was announced he was working with Key and Peele.

I think if word of mouth is good this could be the film that really puts the studio over the top. While I really enjoyed ParaNorman, most of the output of the studio has been more, "I appreciate the craftsmanship and creativity of these films" and not "these are truly modern classics". That's not saying they are all bad films but other than ParaNorman, I just feel the films are missing something. Which is a shame because I do admire the way the films are allowed to be just a little darker and less formulaic than many films for young people, and as others have pointed out, are not filled to the brim with pop culture references or talking animal sidekicks. That said... Yeah they don't feel particularly memorable either to me. I know people love Coreline but I thought it's narrative and characters were muddled and mostly unmemorable. This however looks like it could be both offbeat and also a crowd pleaser.

I'm looking forward to this movie but I will say this.

I hate how the TV spots keep overselling the "You're an embarrassment" line. And they keep re-editing it use it as a blanket response to just about every line for the Matthew McConaughey character.

I hat when tv spots and trailers take a line and just keep using it in such a way.
