Stephen King's hellbent '58 Plymouth Fury, Christine, is back in the shop for some modern retooling, no secret there. However, who are the creative mechanics working under the hood? Word trickled over to us that Disturbia co-writer Christopher Landon may be flirting with the project. In talking with him one-on-one about his latest Dreamworks thriller (he shares screenwriting credit with Carl Ellsworth), Landon was hesitant to delve deep into the subject of a Christine remake, but he did confirm his possible involvement.

"['Christine'] has been all over the place," he says, alluding to the property's travels as a rumored SCI FI Channel Original to Sony and NBC's plans to turn it into an event telepic. "If it happens or not we'll see, but when I came in what I wanted to do was really go back to the book, the source material. I'm a fan of the Carpenter version, it is fun. But the book was much more of a possession story than it was just a killer car. That's what made the book so great is that what was so terrifying was that it wasn't just about an inanimate object running around and killing people, it was a boy who was sorta being taken over by the former owner of the car - and there was something more terrifying about that. Also, I just love the dynamics of the characters and so forth. Right now it's way too soon say anything else about it. We're so in the thick of deal-making, I don't want to blow anything else!"

Fair enough. King's original 1983 novel was turned into a John Carpenter film that same year starring John Stockwell (director of Turistas), Keith Gordon ("Dexter") and Alexandra Paul ("Baywatch"). Not long ago, a remake of the film was announced along with an update of King's Pet Sematary.

Look for more Disturbia coverage as we near its April 13th release and keep an eye out for ComingSoon.net's horror division, ShockTillYouDrop.com, to launch around that ominous date!

I loved the original so I will give the remake a chance.

Wonder how many cars they destroyed in the original for the sake of the movie?

AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH That's enough, hollywood! Stop it!

Stop playing safe with these damn remakes. Grow some balls.

Carpenter's original is pretty damn cool, and I love the concept...but I am not sure about a remake. I don't think it needs one, but then again...does ANY film need a remake?

CAH

Actually, I'm glad they're remaking this movie--I always felt the same way, that it wasn't just how Carpenter put it, with just a car killing people. It is more about the kid, who's life and soul is being ripped apart by the horrible spirits residing in that car.

Can't wait to see this one.

I suppose this is one of those cases where CGI can come in handy for a new version. No need to destroy countless of cars :)

I was so spooked by the original.
I wonder if a remake could do the same. Of course I was just a wee one when I saw it.

The original film was great, I always find time to watch it on TV. It was one of the best Carpenter's films

Stephen King Christine remake Bryan Fuller Directing Sony & Blumhouse – Deadline

Sony Pictures and Blumhouse are revving back up Christine, a new version of the Stephen King novel that Bryan Fuller is writing to direct. Jason Blum is producing for Blumhouse, and Vincenzo Natali and Steven Hoban are also producing.

Fuller is a huge fan of Christine as witnessed by this interview on The Kingcast.

Well hopefully he actually stays attached to this thing.

Fuller doing King is delightful, but boy do I wish this was a King property I gave more of a **** about.

I am intrigued as I am a huge fan of the book and the movie. as good as the movie was there was a lot more in the book that I wish was in the movie, like the fact that the car was driven by the rotting corpse of Lebay (who got more and more decayed during the story). also the effects would finally be able to show Christine actually regenerate, in the book she fixed herself up on the way back to the garage after a murder. and cause of the rolling backwards odometer the first thing that got damaged was the last thing to get fixed and one thing that got damaged was a hood ripped off and it grew back like a scarf being knitted then turned red like a bandage soaked in blood, I would LOVE to see that done.

Saw that movie in theatre with my date. lol It was a good fun.

I don’t know if any of y’all listen to the Kingcast, but Fuller was a guest on the podcast a few months back discussing Christine and, all things considered, it’s probably worth a listen.

I never read the story but love the flick. While I don't think most remakes are needed, this actually intrigues me and hope this gets made.

Bryan Fuller Talks Christine Movie

Bryan Fuller talked Christine when he was on The Kingcast. Here is what he said:

Fuller revealed that his latest draft of the screenplay is now in King's hands, awaiting his approval after Fuller worked to condense the material down into the right movie-length format.

“I wrote a 122-page script, and Blumhouse was like 'Get it in under 100,' and I was like 'I will rise to that challenge.' It was a lot of fun. I think it made it a better script, a tighter script, and now hopefully Stephen King will see how fidelitous it is as an adaptation and sign off, and then we will move forward."

"I love the Carpenter film, but I don't think it's...It owes a lot to the James Brolin movie The Car, in terms of...it's just an evil car, and it does what evil cars do, which is run over people, or taunt them at cemeteries or drive through their house while they're on the phone," Fuller said. "There's so many layers [in the book]. I feel like Carpenter's movie is a cookie, and the Stephen King book is a tiramisu, so it has more layers of cream and chocolate and cakey goodness. The cookie's still delicious, but it's a different kind of dessert experience.

He continued, "I feel like this [version] is much more beholden to the concept of the Overlook on wheels, or the vampiric relationship between the car and Arnie, and certainly Roland LeBay has a lot to do in the story, and he wasn't even a character in the John Carpenter movie. So I think all of those things, for me, were rationale and why we needed a new adaptation of Christine, because so much of the book never made it in previously."

Fuller didn't give a timeline for when we might see it.

oh now I am really looking forward to this, in the book the original owner/seller of the car was basically possessing Arnie and would have conversations with him and over the story you would see him more and more corpse like (think Jack in Werewolf in London). I like that King is even a little involved and I hope he likes the story written so we can get this filmed.

I don't care about it, Carpenter's Christine is perfect, everything in this movie was subtle, even "conversations" between Arnir and Christine.

Good luck reinventing the wheel and adding some unnecessary crap.

That is a very pessimistic view.

Christine Reboot Movie Will Be Extremely Horny, Promises Bryan Fuller

In the latest episode of The Kingscast, Fuller opened up about development on his Christine reboot for Blumhouse. The Hannibal creator revealed that the script is currently in King's hands awaiting his approval and teases his very "horny" approach to the source material. See what Fuller said below:

"This is much more beholden to the concept of 'The Overlook on wheels,' or the vampiric relationship between the car and Arnie. Our version of Christine will be horny as hell."
