So what should Pennywise look like? I imagine they'll want to differentiate from the Tim Curry version.

I.... have no idea. Tim Curry's version IS Pennywise in my mind.

How about something like this?

Or this?

Maybe a full red wig would be the way to go? Curry's version was more Clarebell/Bozo, so maybe this one should be more Ronald McDonald.

Going overtly sinister looking seems like a bad idea. If you could sense him being a murder clown, why would Georgie Denborough not have been heading for the hills?

But this is studio-based horror in the 21st century, so... he's probably gonna look bat**** upfront. :o

How would you design him?

That first pic you posted is unnerving as hell, but I think the true horror of Pennywise is behind the face, not on it. John Wayne Gacy didn't look particularly scary as a clown, but he's frightening because you know what he did.

Then there's the environment. Pennywise appears in places where no clown, or any person for that matter, should appear. A clown coming from a shower drain is scary as **** regardless of how he looks. I hope the filmmakers realize this and don't go too over the top with his design.

Speaking of that... I will always love this shot from the TV movie. Great make-up work.

Pennywise should look like an unassuming, vintage clown whose true nature is not apparent right away.

He shouldn't look like Halloween store evil clown.

If this movie is contemporary, the throwback nature of his clown visage should be enough to add a creepiness factor by itself

What I hope they remember is that he isn't always a clown. Unlike the TV movie...well, for the most part.

Revisiting the book, he's described as having "funny tufts of hair on either side of his bald head."

So I'm imagining something like this, but without the top piece:

I think that first image you posted a few posts back is the best one.

I totally agree with this. In the book Pennywise even says that the reason he appears to people as a clown is so that he'll look less threatening. That way his victims will be even more frightened when he reveals his true nature and devours them (seasoning the meat).

The new Pennywise should look generally harmless, but be just a little bit off. In Tim Curry's case, they gave him a large, bulbous head in order for Pennywise to look not quite human. Other things, like fangs and such, were added for specific scenes as needed. But even without them, it was the clown's personality that made him so sinister.

Remember the opening scene from the TV movie? When Pennywise attacks and kills a little girl in her own back yard? What makes the scene so effective is one moment the clown was laughing and smiling, waving to the girl like he wanted to play. The next moment he has this look of pure hatred on his face and the girl screams. You couldn't get a scene like that if he was designed to look sinister ALL the time.

I like the 1st one, reminds me of this, also maybe a good starting point for Pennywise?

I also totally agree about overtly sinister not being the right way to go. Heck, I even think Harpo Marx would also be a good starting point.

What about something like the Japanese Ronald McDonald?

Or, like Boom already posted, this old black and white clown from this commercial.

Krinkles the Clown is terrifying.

Yeah. The black-and-white doesn't help. Especially toward the end as his eyes started to widen I expected something bad to happen.

Here are ones closer to the book:

Pretty cool. The 2nd one with balloons is quite Burtonesque. I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with for Pennywise look.

My favorite as well, because from a distance it could almost pass for a normal clown.

If they are really going to do this, then I hope they at least take out Pennywise's shadows.
