Learning German

Yeah. I laid on the floor and slept in class. And played harmonica. :o

Well, I am not lazy, and I love learning languages. I don't care if they speak English. By me knowing their language it shows respect, because I took the time to learn their language since they took the time to learn mine.

That was what I told my buddy in Germany last year. He was mad that I was trying to speak German with the locals and he kept saying "Whats the matter with you? I said they speak English!" I happen to know a little German so I didnt want to further the stereotype of the ignorant American.

A guy I know from Bavaria gave me a German slang book a little while back and I memorised one phrase from it:
Das ist doch der letzte Schrott!

:oldrazz:

I went to Hamburg for a few days this year, and seriously, I learned more German there in four days than four years at school.

Yeah the American attitude of taking the easy route irks me a lot. So I try to avoid it. Plus, even if they know english I know they appreciate the effort, and anywyas how can you understand a culture when you don't know the language. I mean, culture is based on language for the most part.

I only learned very basic German for vacation there using a language software. I got along pretty well for a week on my own. I want to go back.

I'm currently studying Intermediate Level German, have a job lined up as a tour guide for Swiss tourists, will be applying to be a tutor in German when I return to university, will be vacationing in Germany next summer, and plan to apply to the Canadian intelligence agency after becoming fluent in both German and Russian.

So there's no shortage of opportunities to apply the German language, even in a place like Newfoundland, in Canada. But if you're going to study, you're going to have to be very consistent and it'll require a strong work ethic.

Well, the older ones did anyway. The younger ones just rolled their eyes and started speaking English. Yeah, I liked to try and blend in over there as much as I could. It bugs me that so many people dont even try to learn a new culture when they travel over seas.

Most white people in America are of German decent,also..when it comes to learning a European language..German is one of the easy ones.

I thought we were basically Irish or English descent. And not many people consider German an easy language. Spanish is usually seen as easier.

Around a quarter of Americans can claim German ancestry. English, being a Germanic language, has some ties to German that could possibly make it easier, though learning the gender and case systems most other languages use can complicate things.
