Sci-Fi Legendary's Live Action Mobile Suit Gundam Movie

I guess it was too much to hope for something different than the RX-78-2.

I was looking through some comments in the Gundam reddit in reaction to this, and one of them said it bears a lot of resemblance to the Gundam Alex (Al-ex, Ar-ex, RX, get it?) from War in the Pocket. Also see a bit of Turn A in its design as well, with the roundedness of the head.

It’s worth noting, Vogt-Roberts, in a tweet earlier this year listing some of his favorite Gundam series, cited War in the Pocket as one of his favorites.

And I agree with him, that series is great. It’s probably my favorite out of all of the Gundam I’ve seen, as it’s the most consistently good, the most grounded and the most human. It also isn’t stuck on and absorbed in the usual philosophizing about “why are we fighting?”, Newtypes and weird spirituality that Tomino seems to have a weird obsession with that brings down a lot of Gundam series and causes my eyes to glaze over. If the film he’s making has even a 1/4 of what that series had, I’d be happy.

Well, to be fair, he’s setting out to make something that’s sort of an encapsulation of everything that makes Gundam what it is, so I’d imagine he’d want the design of the Gundam in his film to retain the basic DNA of what makes a Gundam a Gundam. Also, pretty much all of the main Gundam models in each of their series, while having their own identity, haven’t strayed too wildly from the original design.

It’s like a pizza. There’s various different types of pizzas, with all of the various toppings, ingredients, flavors and shapes. No matter how you slice it, though, it’s still a pizza.

Unless, of course, you’re the Turn A Gundam, which is like the calzone of Gundams. Still kind of pizza-like, but also kind of it’s own weird thing. Still love that Mustachioed Mech, though.

Also, gonna stop before I bring up the “G” word again. I’ve already lost count.

What the hell, I’ll do it one more time. Gundam.

They got rid of Vogt-Roberts? Are you kidding me?

FFS, can we please let this guy get another movie off the ground? At least Metal Gear? Kojima-san, help your buddy out!

What the heck happened to Vogt-Roberts? After Skull Island, I thought the guy would have a decent career at the very least. He's been a ****ing ghost.

My guess is he just vanished into Vietnam

IF they're going the mvoie route, its probably better for them to do an original story then try to adapt any of the shows

I think someone came out with some allegations against him a few years ago and he decided to lay low for a bit, and after that pretty much evaporated off of the face of the Earth.

Also, somewhere in there a few years back, he went full vigilante mode in Vietnam to hunt some gangsters who nearly killed him. Yes, that actually happened.

He was accused of sexually harassing an adult entertainer Dana DeArmond and disappeared. He recently returned to direct two episodes of a now cancelled show Hysteria.

I think the original show is perfect for adaptation.

After the blockbuster success of Kong: Skull Island, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts fled Hollywood to live the expat dream life in Vietnam. Then, one night at a Saigon club, he was brutally beaten by a mysterious mob of gangsters. Who were these monsters? Soon, he began directing something entirely different—an international hunt for the men who nearly killed him

Hey, Quentin, got your next film idea right here! :hehe:

And really, between GWitch and GQuuuux, the Gundam series do seem to be placing more importance to having a female lead. Though, maybe due to the similarities to the Star Trek fandom, maybe more hot guys would work.

Why are people dunking on this choice? I haven’t even seen to much of any of her films, but, from what little I’ve seen of her acting, she seems like a perfectly fine sort of choice for a film like this.
I've only watched Gundam Wing from beginning to end, but going off of that casting Sydney as the lead gives off more Bayformers vibes than say, Exosquad vibes.

It's the optics for me my friend. You have yet another Hollywood adaptation of a Japanese anime and the first bit of casting you announce is a white actor?

Not a good look IMO. They haven't learned their lessons from Dragon Ball or Ghost In The Shell.

I mean, Gundam has been a lot more multi-national in its characters than other animes. Hell, 2 main characters have been middle eastern.
