Superman Returns Less Than 400 Mill WW....And It Won't Break Even

Well they say it has the potential to do it lets hope so

THat's a lot of dough, daaamn.

400 mil worldwide is pretty reachable, though.

Superman returning to the big screen should have been just as big as Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, when you know the film woill do more than break even.

Superman is more than another superhero, Superman is an American institution, and Icon of our culture. Superman is above all other comic book characters, including my beloved Batman.

 thats a **** load of cash to make just break even... imagine what it's gonna have to do to be profitbale enough to earn a sequel....

400 mill thats some major coins there boy, but why is the game coming out in September, I thought that would have been part of its marketing blitz.

Guys if spiderman could make 764 million world wide in 02 i think supes can handle that in 06. Of course thats just my opinion i could be wrong

Superman" will draw obsessive “fan boys” to theaters opening night, making room for other moviegoers the rest of the weekend.

there's an understatement

It should make a lot more than $400m worldwide.

itll get 400 million easily....

batman begins got $371 worldwide and superman is a more recognized and iconic character...

...i'd be very surprised if it doesn't reach $400.

I wouldnt take that number for granted. Batman Begins only made like $372 million worldwide, it was a rousing success in part because it only cost $150 million to make, thats almost a 150% profit.

Say Supes makes $500 million worldwide, thats only a 25% profit, and they spent $400 million to make just $100 million. That's not great business. This film would have to amke $900 million to have the same profitability ratio as Batman Begins...

F-ing King Kong only cost $160 million
actually, $207 million (unless that was in Australian), 20 million of which was paid by Jackson.

Woah i dont think i can see supes making 900 mil, is that including dvd sales merchandise and all that?

Wow, 400M$ from our pockets. Each and everyone us here...

Seriously, i dont get why people get so excited over box-office breaking and making...

the Hype has 33,100 members. For arguments sake, lets say every single registered member here is a different person and actually goes to see the film. Say an avg movie ticket costs $9, that's $297,900. Let's be generous, and say everyone here goes to see it twice, thats $595,800

Fanboy revenue is meaningless, the general public has to buy in

i know that much, but WB seem to be ignoring the money they wasted on the past Superman projects. if Superman Returns can make at least $500 million, i think they'll be happy enough to greenlight a sequel since it'll give them another chance to make more money...

Does anyone else feel that this movie has been marketed as just another comic book movie.

Bah!This movie obviously is going to break the 400M mark. Its Superman, DAMMITT!!!

well a lot of the cost is coming from all their **** ups. Including paying nicholas cage for a movie he never spent one day shooting. 25 million or so.... so this movie making 400 million or not will not dtermine whether or not SUPERMAN gets more movies out... they pretty much know that they are not going to "SUPERBANK" on this... which is great, cause they are still doing it reguardless of thier losses.

IMO

Given the numbers on almost all other superhero movies, most recently (X-Men’s third installment), Superman will hit 400 million easy. The simple fact that it is Superman!

There has not been a Superman film in so long that, that alone is enough to fuel curious movie goers who are not even into comics let alone all of the fanboys who will go see it 3+ times. Given that there is virtually movie competition prepare yourself for some serious box office record being broken by :supes:

You are making some pretty bold statements. I think it will probably break 400 worldwide, but not by much. While there hasn't been a Superman film in a long time, many people are going to be looking for things in a Superman film that are in other films like Spiderman, Batman, the X-Men etc. One of those things is seeing someone like Superman having a major physical confrontation with today's technology to complement a great story. That's not going to happen. While the story is going to be great, I read the novel, and the action overall doesn't leap out at you (or at least me).

Most people I've talked to in mainstream public are more interested in POTC 2 which comes out a week later. Word of mouth could really help or hurt Superman. The hardcore fans will see it the first few days, and a lot of the mainstream will likely wait to see what it's like. If they aren't impressed, they'll wait for the DVD. It will cost a lot less than going to the theatre, and dealing with the lines that this film could have (by your estimation).

DVC deals with a controversial topic, and has been atop the bestselling lists for quite some time. It's success is not a surprise to me, and it will likely have the longest legs of the year. Furthermore, DVC is a film that people can debate and discuss over dinner parties as it is very cerebral in nature. Superman Returns on the other hand, really rocks the boat on various levels. Most notably the relationship with Lois. I think people will check it out once, but I don't think it will have the repeat viewers that you feel it will. I could be wrong, and if I am, I am. However, I just don't see it happening. Singer's approach may actually turn a lot of people off in the mainstream.
