Lethal Weapon V

I think they should've brought Damon Hines back as Nick Murtaugh; recasting him this late in the series seems like a betrayal to the prior films.

reCasting the family doesnt bug me too much, at least the kids.
i mean its one thing recasting Riggs, Murtagh, or Leo or the commisioner or something...
but i dunno that doesnt bug me. and has it been confirmed officially hes up to play the son?

Two things I like about LW4; that it's one of those rare movies with too big a budget (as Warner Bros just threw cash at it to get it made at record speed for summer 1998). So all the action scenes are huge, the opening sequence, just a gag really, involves a petrol tanker and a gas station blowing up-!

Secondly, and this is only partially due to the budget allowing Ricahrd Donner to do whatever he wanted, the action scenes are teh best in the series. The chase scene with Riggs 'skiing' on a table is great, as is the climactic fight with Jet Li which is suitably brutal ten years ahead of it's time.

LETHAL WEAPON 1 --- 10 out of 10
LETHAL WEAPON 2 --- 10 out of 10
LETHAL WEAPON 3 --- 7 out of 10
LETHAL WEAPON 4 --- 8 out of 10

No Gibson? No movie. And they better not go on otherwise.

too bad,
i was looking forward to this. but hey, gibson's a jackass in real life so who knows. maybe this is a blessing in disguise; though i do want to see the LETHAL WEAPON 5 script.

I don't know how to take this news. Mixed feelings, I guess. After reading the interview with Donner, I'm wondering if bringing back any elements of the old franchise is wise. I dunno. I had a lot of hope for a fifth movie, what with Black writing and Mel/Danny possibly returning. However, if Donner weren't going to be involved on any level, maybe no movie is good. It'd be like doing Evil Dead without Sam Raimi or something.

Let's keep in mind here that this isn't official. This is Richard Donner who's always been known for running his mouth and being an egotist (not that he doesn't deserve to be) so let's wait and see.

Yeah, thats super rude of Donner considering Shane was definitely at least half the brains behind the first 2 lethal weapons before getting ignored like so many writers before him and hes the one with full control (sorta) over this 5th one. Mel is saying no for the same reason hes said no to LW5 and Mad Max Fury Road. He just doesnt want to do it. Hes not the same young spry guy. Everyone was reporting that the action scenes were taking a toll on Mel in LW4

I've said it before, I'll say it again. The 'family portrait' ending of LW4 was the perfect closing to the series. If LW5 never comes together, maybe it's for the best.

i hope you're right;
but at the same time i have a bad feeling Donners right about it not happening -- i hope he wrong though. I'd rather see Shane Black direct and Donner not be involved than have no LW5 at all.

Wow. This would be sad. The two of them can barely get out of a car without throwing a hip or something ... :(

Murtaugh was, at least. He said so. And have you seen these two lately?

If they do this, Murtagh should be retired, and Riggs should be a desk jockey, in the same situation as Murtagh was in the first movie. He's almost retired, has a family now, and is content. Then something happens that drags both of them back into the game, reluctantly, for one final case.

Hmmm-that could work. Maybe Riggs is in a position where he can't trust anybody in the department. So he goes to his old buddy for help.

The Lethal Weapon Series is Dead
Source: Moviehole
March 10, 2009

Screenwriter Shane Black tells Moviehole that he doesn't think a Lethal Weapon 5 will ever happen. Black had written a script for the fifth film that he was expected to direct.

The site says that a contact at Warner Bros. Pictures agreed with Black, saying "That one is as good as dead. It won't happen. Which is a pity," adding that Black's screenplay was "fabulous. A much better send off than [Number 4]."

Last October, Richard Donner was quoted as saying that "Mel [Gibson] turned it down. I would like to think that Mel turned it down because I wasn't involved. Knowing Mel, I would like to think that. Would that be the kind of thing he does? It sure would be."

Back then, Donner said he had his own version of the fifth film in the works. "Channing Gibson, who wrote the fourth one, and Mike Riva, a designer on three of them, and myself and Derek [Hoffman, an associate at The Donner Company] had an incredibly strong story for the fifth movie. But we weren't given the opportunity and I think maybe I could have convinced Mel to do it. But Warners chose to go with Joel Silver."
