SPOILERS.........................

This is for anyone who saw tonights finale. The whole scene at the end with Clark saying "Clark Kent is dead". I might be reading to much into this, but I hope they don't begin taking a more silver age position with this character. You know, with Kal-El returning and Superman being the real person, and the bumbling Clark Kent as the disguise. Thats so not how this show has been set up from day one. And on top of that, I hope they don't bring Lex back as an underground wacko who loves real estate, because we know Lex isn't dead.

God, I hope they haven't let that idiot Dan Didio's love of the silver age influence the show.

That's where I wanna see them go with Clark.

Much of this show is based off of the silver age, so it wouldn't surprise me to see more of it.

That's the first thing I thought of when he said that.

it would make for a better season finale

Amen to that.

As to the topic though, I doubt that "Smallville" would do that. Well....let me rephrase that. I doubt that "Smallville" would do that to that extent. I think they've defined Clark's character too much to completely reverse course and make "Superman" the real person and "Clark" the disguise. I can, however, see them having Clark ham it up a bit as both "Clark" and "Superman" with neither one being the "real" face of the character.

That said though, I do seem to remember that there was much ado made at one time by Al and Miles stating that they wanted to eventually merge "Smallville" with the movie "world" and in the movie Clark was a total bumbler so maybe I shouldn't be too quick to speak. :cwink:

I didn't know that Clark losing so much hope in humanity that he declared his human side dead was a Silver Age concept.

Yea with the show they can do alot with things borrowing best things from various eras of the comics and then throwing in there twists. Some have been good some not so much.

I wish people would actually read the silver age before ignorantly talking **** about it...

Silver Age lex was NOT into real estate

wasnt he just a crazied criminal scientist... at that period?

A "super genius" crazied criminal scientist, thank you. :D I actually sort of miss that version of Lex. I found him much more interesting than the Kingpen rip-off Byrne turned him into. I also thought that a super genius villain that could turn almost anything into a super powerful invention was much more suited to be Superman's arch foe than simply a man with the powers of Donald Trump.

Anyone interested should pick up some of the old stories by Elliott S. Maggin. I always thought he did the best Lex.

Exactly...but ignorant post crisis fanboys are under the assumption that he was gene hackman, which couldnt be farther from the truth, and shows that they're knowledge of pre crisis only comes from superman: the movie...honestly, its like saying post crisis sucks based on the "Lois and Clark" TV show....

No he wasn't. That was one of the concepts the movies made that I absolutely hated in the first movie, and give even more hate toward a certain someone that thought it was a good idea to ressurect in the modern day.

Lex in the silver age was more of a genius mad scientist...even though I love the businessman route he took later.

The Animated Series and Smallville's version of Lex are IMHO the better versions of the character

Sounds more suited to be a Megaman villain than a superman one.

The lex luthor of the animated series was a perfect mix of genius and industrialist.

yea personally for me i have enjoyed the stas/smallville lex's and i would like to see that take of the character in a future rebooted film series. But maybe could throw in elements of the criminal genius/scientist stuff too. Or do a reverse of the character have him start out as the business lex, then is discovered to be a scam, and then he becomes the criminal genius version.

Lex to me is the one in Lex Luthor:Man of Steel, dcau/DC animated Universe, The Batman Lex, Smallville Lex, Superman Red Son Lex and to an extent Superman Birthright lEX. I think Lex should have the super criminal genius like the Silver age but is rich and think superman is an alien menace trying to destroy/take control of earth so Lex tries to "save" the world for aliens/metahumans who he consider terrorists and threats to humanity like Supeman, Brainiac, Green Arrow, etc the law can't pin his crimes on him because he spread his mone

You'll have to check out a pre-crisis story and see what you think for yourself. My description doesn't really do the character justice.

Still, everyone has their own likes and dislikes. I liked the animated series Luthor in the JLU cartoons because he actually did appear to be a threat at times. The Donald Trump Luthor never seemed to really make the grade for me.

For example, a silver age Luthor plot might have him attacking Superman with a variety of inventions such as the gravity generator that increased Superman's mass until he was too heavy to move and began to sink into the Earth towards the center of the planet. Luthor hated Superman, wanted to kill him, and usually had various schemes that promised success. I got why he was a good candidate for arch foe as he could literally stand toe to toe with Superman just by utilizing his genius.

An example of a post-crisis Luthor plot involved him buying the Daily Planet...

It's been a couple of decades now and while I realize that Luthor was a bad person in control of a newspaper I still don't quite get the use of print media in a vendetta against a man that can move mountains.

But to each his own. :yay:

I guess he bought the DP to make sure Lex is veiw in positive light, take out any story that talks negetivily about Lex and Lexcorp, and made Superman look bad so the whole public turn against him which was a good plan but it end up badly

lol, I actually got that part. I guess what I was trying to say in a humerous way was that to me buying The Daily Planet just didn't quite equal the "go for the throat" attitude that trying to kill Superman outright did. Silver Age Luthor didn't care how the public viewed Superman or himself. He just wanted Superman dead.

One had the scientific acumen that I could understand would make him a viable threat. The other was a guy that liked to pull board room tricks and just seemed like a candidate to be swatted like a fly. When he pulled out his Kryptonite ring I often wondered why Superman just simply didn't lobotomize him with a blast of heat vision from orbit.

And before anyone says anything, yes, I know Superman would never do that. I was simply making a joke. But seriously though, he dealt with and beat on a regular basis Metallo who always pulled out a fist-sized chunk of Kryptonite in the middle of the fight, but that little ring kept him at a distance? I just saw it as lazy writing.
