Let's talk about Costumes...(please)

Sihouette was confirmed.

I thought it was implied by Hooded Justice's reaction when he caught the copmedian trying to rape SS1, but never actually confirmed....

and Capn Metropolis, i thought it was purely the old "defends himself too much, must be gay" theory cos he was so right wing and reactionary, fighting societies ills and evils like promiscuity and homosexuality and commie-ness. the old self loathing thiong.
but never actually confirmed

I think the comedian was implying that Hooded Justice was into S&M, not that he was gay. He was suggesting that beating people up turned him on when he was kicking his ass for trying to rape Silk Spectre.

Captain Metropolis and Hooded Justice were gay with each other.

Its in one of the letters, I believe in the Sally Jupiter centric chapter.

Anybody read the new update from watchmencomicmovie.com ? it says that some costumes will be completely different, and one can presume that these are ozymandias, silk spectre, and nite owl.

Damn it.

IMO I could care less about costumes...

I'm more concerned about the aesthetic "feel" of the film, which I feel like Snyder and Co. have nailed...

And as for the handling of a gigantic, unyieldy story... (the verdict must wait until March of 2009)...

Costume Illustrator Talks Watchmen

Source:
SyFy Portal

January 10, 2008

SyFy Portal interviewed Watchmen costume illustrator Dawn Brown, who said the following:

"The costume designer, Michael Wilkinson, gave me very specific direction on the design of the suits," she said. "Obviously, we are all aware of what Dave Gibbons did. Some character designs are very faithful to the book. Others will be completely different."

The full interview is available at the link above. Watchmen, directed by Zack Snyder (300), stars Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman, Carla Gugino, Stephen McHattie and Matt Frewer. It opens March 6, 2009.

Wonder who will look completely different.
They said the same thing about Sandman and Venom (and Goblin I guess) in Spider-Man 3.

Actually I have a feeling Nite Owl wont be that different. I mean, it'll be the same basic design with a few changes. I can see them completely revamping Ozy and Silk Spectre though.

I think I remember that around Comic Con, Snyder said that the Nite Owl costume will be rather different.

I'd say Nite Owl will have a slight tweak, but Ozzy will look completely different; which is good.

I'd say Silk Spectre will definitely be one of them. I don't find it upsetting at all, since you can't really have an actress running around in high-heels because she, well, wouldn't be able to run.

If you watch clsely in the making of's on the website they posted, they showed just for a second some concept art on the walls featuring all the heroes lined up. It was blurry, but I could tell that Silk Spectre still had yellow flimsy costume. It is still cut the same way and all... then again, this was concept art, no idea how long ago that was... but at some point in production, they were thinking of keeping it close to her original look.

Stop freaking out, guys. Observe, from left to right: Doctor Manhattan, The Comedian (obscured by head), Ozymandias, Nite Owl II, Silk Spectre, and Rorschach.

Nite-Owl looks essentially like a Nite-Owl/Batman hybrid, and Silk Spectre looks like an updated, more fully-clothed version of the original. Ozymandias is the most drastic change with the all-black palette, and his is the only one I have a problem with. All-black is inconsistent with his character. If anything, all gold would have been the way to go (since the purple & gold thing obviously wasn't going to work onscreen).

Isn't part of the story that they look funny dressed up like that? And that it isn't practical?

EXACTLY. Thats the idea.
THeres a moment in superman returns that i loved (if the only part) where superman is getting the crap beat out of him on kryptonia or whatever...the kryptonite mountain. There was something so jarring about not just seeing superman get beaten but seeing a guy in colorful spandex and a cape getting kicked in the ribcage. THAT's watchmen right there. :supes:

So basically this is a good time for ZS to stick to what the comic did.

Here's my attempt at costumes for Laurie and Ozymandias thanks to heromachine, i used the blurry Zack Snyder war room picture as reference. Please dont butcher me.

My thoughts exactly. I don't want Nite Owl to look like a badass. I want him to wear that silly looking owl suit. And I don't see why Ozy can't just wear gold/bronze armor like something you see in "Rome" and a dark purple cape.

I want Manhattan to have a glorious glowing cock

Haha That's the first time this year I've been tempted to quote someone from the boards in my signature. Very funny.

The thing about Nite Owl, is that he will look silly even if he's trying to look badass. Even if his costume is badass, it'll be silly. He's dressed as an owl. That will be fantastic. I doubt Veidt will wear all black. They won't want to broadcast the twist. I'm guessing that's a darker purple with gold armoring in the costume.

Yes and no. Hollis explains why he designed his costume the way he did in Under the Hood. On the other hand, Laurie talked about how silly she felt dressing up. So I think the message is that the costumes were a bit silly and that idea seems to be kept in tact from the designs we've seen, but that doesn't mean they have to be garrish or over-the-top.

I remember Hollis talking about the costume. His is practical and necessary.

But I was talking more along the lines of Nite Owl II, Laurie, and some of the other background heroes... aka the ones they are thinking of changing up.

I think the silliness of Night Owl's look should be that you should be able to see that he's let himself go a bit - I love that Night Owl is tubby. But it should look like it WOULD be fairly bad-ass if he was still in shape.

As for the actual suit itself, I'm hoping for the sort of thing they haven't yet done for Batman - Night Owl's costume IS basically a re-jigged Batman costume after all. Just a really sturdy looking suit with a cloth exterior, dark grey and dark brown, leather for boots, cowl and gloves and cloth cape.

Ditch the stupid head flap and re-design the cowl a little bit (maybe a tad more like Frank Quitely's Owl Man in "Earthe 2"), maybe re-design the wing-cape bits a little because they will look awful in real life, but otherwise have it be a fairly faithful design.
