Let's talk about Pedophiles

On those stings, first of all, most of the guys have been caught doing it before and admit that they're sick, horrible people.
Also, this isn't a case where it's some mega-hot 17.5 year old who looks 20.
They are always SUPER clear about the "fact" that the "kid" is like 14. If you have sympahty for a 45 year old man who's really tempted to take the virginity of a 14 year old, then that's scary in itself.

One old guy even asked if the girl had any pubic hair and when she said "only a little", he said, "That's terribly sexy."
But he KNEW he was talking to, like a 13 year old or something.

Agree, I couldn't believe that one dude who brought his 5 year old son
to a surpose 14 yr old. I hope he loses that kid, he's one sick father.

Once again, I was just laying out the legal argument. I didnt say I agreed with it or had sympathy for some creepy old pedo. So point that finger elsewhere.

The father obviously wanted a three-some.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jh7LOwnPfAk

the thread was entitled - Pedophile gets pwned

The responses are just what you might expect

"The cops were wating outside for his sick ass.

OT: A cat?

I'm glad this sick bastard is off the streets." etc.

Now what's wrong with that you ask?

Well it got me thinking about what happened in some parts of Britain when " The News Of The World" started a "name and shame" campaign, where they published the names and adresses of convicted paedophiles?

The unwashed went insane. There were large protests some tured into riots outside the homes of those thought to be paedophiles. But often, completely innocent people were being attacked and forced out their homes after being mistaken for paedophiles/relatives of paedophiles, those not actually forced out still had thier cars and houses vandalised.

A Portsmouth paediatrician was forced out of her home when it was vandalised by a mob who got her title confused with paedophile. And a 14 year-old was killed when a petrol bomb was thrown through a window. :(

While many of those attacked were innocent, a lot of real paedophiles went underground where they couldn't be monitored, and others escaped the country.

It's better for sex offenders to be known to the authorities only so they can be monitored.
If people (especially parents) find out about sex offenders living in their area, all hell can break loose.
Sex offenders have to live somewhere and if people know where they are they will be forced into hiding.

It's best the authoritys and not the media deal with this sort of thing.

Chris Morris produced a controversial episode of Brass Eye highlighting this type of "Moral Panic" (For more on Moral panics see Cohen "Moral Panics and Folk Devils").

http://www.spikedhumor.com/articles/3723/Brass_Eye_2001_special_Dangerous_online_game.html

http://www.thehighhat.com/Static/002/brass_eye.html

Dateline is just promoting the myth perverts are everywhere in my opinion and creating a climate of fear that will drive perverts underground and cause the Innocent to be harmed. Why don't these childrens parents monitor the sites their kids use. When mine are old enough I will.

Thoughts?

I, BISON, would like to see a show where hot pedo women go after young boys and get caught in the act doing it! That would be hilarious and pervertedly hot!!! One of my old work associates had sex with his teacher up until his senior year. One of my friends here used to have an asian teacher who was cute and ALLL OVER him when he was 15.

I'm tired of seeing old men, letz get the women in here than. That'd be interesting.

Nope. I've had several underaged girls after me, and unlike these guys (text on the internet), one of 'em was just standing there alone with me and took her shirt off.
I turned her down not only because I was afraid of ending up in jail (although still a huge factor), but also because her youth and youthful stupidity/naivete was a huge turn-off. She seemed like a little kid. It was gross.
There's something wrong with you if you take 'em up on it. My roommate ended up taking her up on it (literally, har har) and he is f***ed up. And, sure enough, just like out of a crappy movie, when he got tired of her/dumped her, suddenly she thought she might be pregnant and might have to tell her parents.

If a cop doesn't just stand on the corner posing as a drug dealer, but actually advertises the fact that he's got crack for sale on the internet while chatting with me, why on Earth would I go, "Hmmm, I would never ever really try crack, but, man, it's SO tempting right now.

Have you seen or heard of 'Hard Candy'? This deals with the very same subject of paedophilia, and raises thought-provoking questions. I haven't seen it, but I plan to - partly because of the content, partly because of the attention it has attracted but more because of the level of acting of Ellen Page, whom I want to see.

jaguarr - nice to see you again. You're saying you'll ignore the 'ends justify the means' and go for that ole petrol bomb through the window technique...?

I know what you mean though, because I read about the same scenario the world over and while this somewhat precedented kind of public outrage is understandable, it does more damage than good in the longer run particularly if discord or innocent passerbys are caught in the strife, as well as fostering the belief that children should be protected at all times. Education is the key, of course.

Inform oneself of the myths of online communication and so forth.

They should all be shot...period. Pedophilia is sick beyond sick.

I wonder if the ring on these guys' telephones is the Ice Cream Man truck jingle.

Heya, pyro. Good to see you as well. "Hardcandy" is supposed to be an excellent film, centering on revenge being placed in the hands of the supposed victim, with the setting being pedophilia. I haven't seen it yet, either, but it's gotten very good reviews and is supposed to be an interesting social commentary on the topics of pedophiles, revenge and who's really the victim and who's the evil person in these kinds of situations. Personally, I have zero tolerance for anyone who would knowingly seek sexual interaction with an underage person. There's no way to justify it in my eyes. Sure, college guys get fooled by high school girls with fake ID's and the like, but it's not like they were out cruising the Junior High's or something. They got tricked, and that type of scenario raises some of those questions about responsibility for actions. But the people who knowingly and actively seek out underage kids for the purposes of sex of some type...well...if a Molatov Cocktail is the cure for them, then so be it. :)

Probably, though I think they have better taste than that. Oh wait...good lord....did that sound bad to anyone else?

pedophilia is a pretty despicable crime. One that should get you locked away for a LONG time. But I do agree all of the Dateline specials, where Stone Phillips jumps out from behind the sofa and asks these guys why they want to "bang young girls" are getting a bit ridiculous. Everyone is doing them now, and a lot of them are bordering on entrapment. It'd be different if a real girl complained and they set up the sting, but these people on the shows pretend to be kids and actively seek these guys out.

I also agree that there whereabouts should only be known to the police, not John Q. Public. However that's a real gray area since people believe they have a right to know. Then again, they dont tell you where former murderers live, so I'm not sure why this should be different.

There is where the gray area comes in. Pedophilia is a more heinous crime than homicide, but that is one interpertation. Why not keep a database of all drug offenders?

It at last appears some serious posters exist at the Hype, albeit you have to wade through dross to find them. Sadly a lot of dross has been posted in this thread but some at least are able to discuss complex issues like this in an adult fashion.

Commendable, but you have to bear in mind it's the Superhero Hype, not the debating society.

True, True - I belong to a number of other forums as do you I am sure and the amount of "off topic" in this community in "serious" threads truly takes the biscuit. I actually enjoy what the better posters have to say here, both for and against my point of view. By the way I left debating societies behind when I left University. A very long time ago.

The legal age of sexual consent in Canada (and in Hawaii, and in many other parts of the world) is 14. I had sex with a 14 year-old girl when I was 19. Does that make me a pedophile? I don't think so.
