Netflix Lands Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ‘Tick, Tick… Boom’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Following a heated bidding war, Netflix has walked away with the rights to “Tick, Tick… Boom,” a musical adaptation to be directed by “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Sources say Andrew Garfield is the top choice to star, though no deal is done.

“Dear Evan Hansen” writer Stephen Levinson adapting the script based on the original stage show by the late “Rent” creator Jonathan Larson. Brian Grazer and Ron Howard and Julie Oh of Imagine Entertainment are producing along with Miranda. Julie Larson and Levinson are exec producing.

“Tick, Tick… Boom!” is set in 1990 and tells the story of Jon, an aspiring theater composer who is waiting tables in New York City while writing Superbia – which he hopes will be the next great American musical and finally give him his big break. Jon is also feeling pressure from his girlfriend Susan, who is tired of continuing to put her life on hold for Jon’s career aspirations. Meanwhile, his best friend and roommate Michael, has given up on his creative aspirations for a high paying advertising job on Madison Avenue and is about to move out. As Jon approaches his 30th birthday, he is overcome with anxiety – wondering if his dream is worth the cost.

This does look great! Garfield even looks like Larson and his singing sounds good in that little clip.

I’ve never seen this show but I’m a huge fan of Larson’s other big musical (Rent). Here’s to hoping this turns out better than the movie version of that did. But I have more faith in Lin-Manuel Miranda than Chris Columbus, a man who is just lucky that there was another guy named Chris Columbus who committed far greater crimes against humanity than ruining Rent and putting Trump into a Home Alone sequel.

I gotta get on this. Currently don't have Netflix access, but my friend will be back soon and we're planning to watch it together. It's been a big year for musicals - hopefully this, West Side Story and Cyrano will be a proper rebound after the calamity of DEH.

As someone who turned 30 this year as well, the theme of this movie really kicked in. Andrew Garfield shines and flexes in every scene and has a great singing voice. I hopes he sneaks into his second Oscar Nomination.

Some songs through the middle are just "there", but the opening and the ending are phenomenal. Decent directing from LMM as well.

I'm not the biggest fan of musicals, but even I loved this and Garfield is flat out amazing in it. The third act of this movie alone should secure him along with Will Smith for a slot at the Oscars next year.

I've been a fan of him ever since I first saw in The Social Network and then he completely blew me away in Hacksaw Ridge, but this is easily the best performance of his career so far.

As a huge fan of Rent, I really enjoyed this as well. I think it’s going to be a horse race between Andrew in this and Will in King Richard. I think Andrew is the better performance but Will is the bigger attraction.

The “Come to your senses” piece was definitely the stand out.

I’ve got this stuck in my head on repeat…it’s so catchy

Im not a huge musical guy but god damn Andrew's performance BROKE me, i was a mess by the end, i havent been this emotional since Coco.

Well deserved, even if the Globes are kind of the black sheep of awards now. I'd love to see Andrew win the Oscar for this but I have a feeling this is Will Smith's year.

For a guy whose never sang before, I thought Garfield did a great job. I'm glad he's getting a lot of attention for this, even though I had some issues with the film overall.
