Lists

I see these threads cropping up everyday, list your fave TV show/movie/cereal/wank/writer/artists etc..

I just don't get it. Do they ever spark conversation? Is there ever any justification into the reasoning behind the choices given within said lists?

There's no conversation to be had there, it's just a list.

So why do we do it? Are we that hungry for information that we'd forego any rational sense of reporting, instead opting for that 'fast food' approach to knowledge? Would it kill you all just to give a 10-15 word reason behind Aliens vs Predator being you're fave flick of all time? Are we really all that lazy? What do we want? Another list? Because that all we get.

Lists begets lists.

I usually like the list threads. Sometimes I write a bit of explanation if the list calls for it or if I feel like it, but just as often I settle for the list alone.
I think we like lists for two reasons.
One : they spark our curiosity. While I'm writing this I'm watching a 'Top 10 shocking videos' on a music channel in the background (WTF, Robbie Williams is higher than Marilyn Manson ?!) The Pussycat Dolls are shaking their tight female booty on another channel, but somehow I stick with Robbie shacking his man-ass. Why ? I'm curious what else is coming up. Darn lists.
Two : we use the lists as a way to give ourselves a sort of identity. When we list favorite stuff we're also trying to say something about ourselves : 'I'm someone who likes this, you're someone who likes that.' At the same time we might hope to get recognition for our likes our dislikes.

Or maybe I'm looking too much into this and thus spoiling all the fun.

I enjoy the lists, but I also enjoy the games... perhaps they'll move the lists to the new "games" forum and really make community a ghost town.

MrScissorhands makes a good point,if my list is really long you can imagine I wouldn't want to expalin a damn thing.

When I do "Last Thing", I try to give more,because I'm bored

You would have to make some sort of list for us to be certain.
