So it was made pretty obvious that Iron Monger and Whiplash are dead... But what scenario could there be where both survived? Assuming Vanko's suit didn't actually explode. In both cases it would've been their armor that shielded them from any blast damage. If they didn't escape, SHIELD would have came along and collected them.

Are they being held in the same SHIELD prison as Abomination? Perhaps they are even sharing a cell. They will probably never see the light of day again.

I don't think it matters since they won't be showing up--the Mandarin is the big boss in this story. And for the record, I really hope he survives IM3, even if we never get an IM4/never see him again. It's what they got right with the Joker in The Dark Knight. The arch-nemesis should always be there to threaten the hero.

Also, I think Abomination is under Ross's custody, not SHIELD's.
