Official: Diffused Bomb in Central London Would Have Caused Significant Damage

LONDON — Police thwarted a terror attack Friday near the famed Piccadilly Circus in the heart of London, defusing a crude bomb made of gasoline, propane gas, and nails after an ambulance crew spotted smoke coming from a silver Mercedes outside a nightclub.
A British government official told FOX News that a number of people "were seen making their way away from the car," leading Scotland Yard to believe detonation would have been accomplished remotely.
Britain's Sky News also quoted a police source as saying the device was to be set off remotely by cell phone. A police officer risked his life by removing the remote trigger from the vehicle before the device could be set off, the souce was quoted as saying.
Hours later, police closed a major road — Park Lane — and began asking people to leave the adjacent Hyde Park because of a suspicious vehicle.
Sky News reported that police were focusing on a vehicle in an underground parking lot that had been linked to the explosives-packed car. A remote-controlled robot was being used to inspect the vehicle.
The bomb in the city's theater district was powerful enough to have caused "significant injury or loss of life" — possibly killing hundreds, British anti-terror police chief Peter Clarke said.

BTW, this car bomb they found was very close to the largest Apple Store in the world, which is located in London. I guess someone saw an opportunity with all the people hanging around the Apple Stores today with the iPhone release.

Oh great,

but i guess it is the season for bomb scares, attacks and increased paranoia..

There was a larger Night club there too.

I didn't think about the iPhone connection until then. Crazy.

Look for a lot of arreewsts very soon. With the car still in tact, fingerprints, hair, DNA, serial numbers, plate numbers, where the gas canisters were made.....EVERYTHING IS STILL THERE!! :woot:

I'm sure that expected the car to be burned to a crisp...evidence and all. But no go.

Criminals are increasingly stupid. Even after a major explosion and fire like that, forensics guys can still pull fingerprints and DNA off of those materials. They can also track down info on plate numbers, serial numbers and where the canisters were made, too. Idiots.

Wait, the terrorists just left the car there to blow by itself, what *****es! They should've died in the car, that's the way real terrorists do it, no virgins for these guys.

Not all terrorists are Muslim. Hell, the method of this atack sounds alot like one carried out by Irish Militants a few years ago.

Was it just a regular cop that disarmed it and not a bomb squad guy? Damn, that guy deserves some type of award.

Maybe they'll find Chris Benoit's fingerprints all over the car-bomb and a mysterious deposit to his bank accounts from somewhere in Redmond, Washington.

****!! I was thinking of going to Piccadilly Circus.

Well, according to CNN, the second vehicle that they found over at Park Lane has the same type of device as the first car did. Hopefully they do not find another one. :csad:

maybe this is a nit pick, but wouldn't the title be defused bomb? i mean when its talking about the situation maybe diffuse would be correct, but they were talking about the bomb/car, it should have been defuse, shotty journalism.

Naturally, of all the days in the year I could have gone... I chose to go to London today :cmad:

Wasn't too bad, just a lot of sirens and emergancy service vehicles all day.

My brother is in Bristol for the summer for conservatory...wonder what he is thinking right now.

It just said on the news here that 'the police are taking considerable interest' in that vehicle, so I guess that means there was another one?

Europeans seriously take care of business when it comes to terrorism. respect.

Well, England should be used to it (due to Ireland).

I've often said that cell phones are evil. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
