Well as movies, Star Wars IS the original as it wasn't directly adapted from something else.

i agree that it was original in the sense that no one had seen anything like it at the time (same could be said for LotR), but not original in a story or character sense. George Lucas drew heavily from Akira Kurosawa's films.

Star Wars gets my vote because its what I grew up on.I love Star Wars like most of you do,but I think sometimes our judgment is clouded by seeing things threw the eyes of our past.

i totally agree. if i take nostalgia and childhood love into account then Star Wars definitely has the upper hand but when i watch the movies today i just can't say Star Wars is better. Star Wars doesn't tug on my heart strings, today, the way LotR does.

Rings' production was better all around, so I went with Rings, but honestly both trilogies, 3 really, have the dumbest, most out-of-place endings so far.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy has better acting and writing for sure, but the Star Wars films are set in a more interesting universe, have a better overall story, and a certain charm that The Lord of the Rings will just never be able to match.

I'm a huge, huge fan of LOTR, but Star Wars will always be my obsession.

Rings has better acting, effects and far superior production quality. But its also overlong, dull in many places and just a little too (for wont of a better word) gay.

Star Wars has lightsabers. That alone makes it rule.

The question should be:

Bigger Dorks -

Star Wars fans
LOTR fans

This is an unfair question. I was raised on LOTR and SW, and was introduced to them around the same time. But if I must choose which had a bigger impact on me as a MOVIE, it would be Star Wars, since the LOTR films weren't out until I was a teenager, and I must have seen the Star Wars movies dozens of times as a kid.

My favorite trilogy? The Lord of the Rings trilogy, by a hair.
However, the trilogy that made the biggest impact? Star Wars

Why must we choose. We had 3 of the greatest trilogies ever in one Decade. Matrix, LOTR, & Star Wars. Why not love them all equally? I love them for certain things they bring to the table.

the matrix doesn't count because the second two are completely different from the first

Lord of the Rings is a more well rounded trilogy (better acting, script, dialogue, etc.), however Star Wars is more appealing (brighter visuals, different worlds, lightsabers, etc.)

LotR = fulfills the nerd in us
Star Wars = fulfulls the geek in us

may the one ring be with you...

Let's do the math, here are the movies ranked:

1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. The Return of the King
4. The Two Towers
5. Return of the Jedi
6. The Fellowship of the Ring

Star Wars wins 8 to 14.

I mean how two and three have a storyline that directly connects each other, where the first one stands as an actually good movie.

Pretty much. Just because a movie has two sequels does not make it a trilogy per sé. The style and the tone changed totally between 1 and 2/3 (as did the quality, but watcha gonna do?).

Lord of the rings movies were so boring. Jackson failed. He didn't really understand the story.
And George Lucas made a series where no movie fit another one.

I don't agree with that.

A New Hope over Return of the Jedi?

Say what!?

The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars are classics.

Star Wars has been around longer and has more nostalgia.
Also spawned more iconic characters.
