London, Feb 20 (ANI): If rumors are to be believed, the lost city of Atlantis might have been found 620 miles off the west coast of Africa near the Canary Islands, with the help of Google Ocean, a 3D software.

Atlantis is believed to be an island civilization sunk by an earthquake and floods around 9,700BC — nearly 12,000 years ago.

Now, according to a report in The Sun, Google Ocean has captured an image showing a grid that features a rectangular perimeter of the seabed, a possible location for Atlantis.

This particular region, 620 miles off the west coast of Africa near the Canary Islands, is a location for the legendary continent seemingly suggested by the ancient philosopher Plato.

The “grid” showed up on Google Ocean, a Google Earth extension that uses a combination of satellite images and marine surveys.

Dr Charles Orser, curator of historical archaeology at New York State University — and one of the world’s leading authorities on Atlantis — called it “fascinating”.

“The site is one of the most prominent places for the proposed location of Atlantis, as described by Plato. Even if it turns out to be geographical, this definitely deserves a closer look,” he said.

Situated in an area called the Madeira Abyssal Plane, the grid was spotted by aeronautical engineer Bernie Bamford as he browsed through Google Ocean.

According to Bernie, “It looks like an aerial map of Milton Keynes. It must be man-made.” (ANI)

Great! Now we need some scuba divers to go down there and see if there are some underwater seacreatures.:yay:

I guess we'll see what happens.

Does that mean Google can claim it as a corporate territory?

Cool, looks like it could be an ancient city.

OMG! Do you think they'll discover Namor?!

Hopes dashed as Google Ocean image of 'lost city of Atlantis' proves to be nothing of the sort

It was the picture that seemed to show the remains of the mythical lost city of Atlantis, more than 9000 years after it sank beneath the ocean's waves.

An apparently amazing photo on the front page of The Sun this morning appeared to show a grid system etched onto the ocean bed about 620 miles off the west coast of Africa.
But today it was revealed that the photo, taken using Google's latest gadget, Google Ocean, shows nothing more than thin bands of sonar data collected by boats mapping the ocean floor.
The lines are strips of the sea bed that have been mapped by oceanographers.

Lost city: Could these grid-like markings show the location of the lost city of Atlantis?
A spokeswoman said: 'It's true that many amazing discoveries have been made in Google Earth including a pristine forest in Mozambique that is home to previously unknown species and the remains of an Ancient Roman villa.

'In this case, however, what users are seeing is an artefact of the data collection process.

'Bathymetric (or sea floor terrain) data is often collected from boats using sonar to take measurements of the sea floor.

'The lines reflect the path of the boat as it gathers the data.

'The fact that there are blank spots between each of these lines is a sign of how little
we really know about the world's oceans.'
The perfect rectangle was first noticed on Google's new underwater exploration tool by a British aeronautical engineer who claimed it looks like a 'man-made aerial map' of a city.

The grid system was found in an area known as the Madeira Abyssal Plane off the coast of Morocco, not far from the Canary Islands
Atlantis experts said that the unexplained grid is located at one of the possible sites of the legendary island, which was first described by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato.

The earliest known records of this mythical land appear in Plato's 'dialogues', Critias and Timaios.
Plato described it as an island 'larger than Libya and Asia put together'.

Dr Charles Orser, curator of historical archaeology at New York State University said that the site was 'one of the most prominent places for teh proposed location of Atlantis.'

'Even if it turns out to be geographical, it definitely deserves a closer look,' he told the Sun.

Bernie Bamford, 38, of Chester who spotted the unusual grid-like markings compared it to the plan of Milton Keynes, the Buckinghamshire town built on a grid design.
The lost city of Atlantis has captured the imagination of scholars for centuries.
According to Plato's account, written around 355 BC, Atlantis sank to the bottom of the ocean in around 9600BC - by our modern-day system of dating.
Atlantis was an incredibly prosperous and beautiful city and the Atlanteans were a highly advanced civilization with hot and cold running water and a developed social order.
Many people believe that Plato's story is historically accurate but that he simply got his geographical facts wrong.

As a result, the search for the fabled city has spanned the globe.

Sunken: The city of Atlantis was once a major civilization many thousands of years ago
Other experts believe that the story of Atlantis sinking into the ocean may reflect ancient Egyptian records of a massive volcanic eruption on the island of Thera (now known as Santorini) in about 1500BC which severely damaged the island of Crete.
Google Ocean is available for free by downloading the latest version of Google Earth from the Google homepage.
This latest version of Google Earth lets people plunge beneath the sea, swim around underwater volcanoes, hover above shipwrecks and navigate mountains on the sea bed.
The software also shows protected areas of the ocean and lets people follow the movement of sea animals tagged with satellite trackers.

A cover-up, like Roswell.

but wasn't Atlantis supposed to be a series of rings?
Yup. That's why I found it odd that so-called "Atlantis experts" were thinking this was legitimate. The only way you could believe this was the real Atlantis is if you weren't taking Plato's words literally (technically Critias' words if you believe "Critias" is a transcript of an actual conversation and not just a cautionary tale), and if you're not going to take Plato literally then you really have no basis for the existence of Atlantis at all.

Here's what Plato (Critias) has to say about Atlantis:

Excerpt from Plato's Critias:
...In this mountain there dwelt one of the earth born primeval men of that country, whose name was Evenor, and he had a wife named Leucippe, and they had an only daughter who was called Cleito. The maiden had already reached womanhood, when her father and mother died; Poseidon fell in love with her and had intercourse with her, and breaking the ground, inclosed the hill in which she dwelt all round, making alternate zones of sea and land larger and smaller, encircling one another; there were two of land and three of water, which he turned as with a lathe, each having its circumference equidistant every way from the centre, so that no man could get to the island, for ships and voyages were not as yet...

Doesn't fit the description at all. Then again, it's much too small to fit Plato's description too so maybe it could just be a small part of it, but then where's the rest? Of course this is all made moot by the fact that Google has said it was just an error in their program and such a formation doesn't even exist on the ocean floor in that spot, and I have no reason to mistrust Google. It does sound like the beginnings of a good conspiracy plot for a novel though and I hear Dan Brown just finished his latest project.

It might have been some of the coast of Africa or a separate island....land does rise and fall....and what would be the point of a cover up??

This is great news if it actually is Atlantis. On the other hand, it may just be viral marketing for the movie coming out... :D

Damn! Must be some other sunken city. Just how many of these things are there??

:hehe:

Including Atlantis? Well there's Numenor, R'lyeh, Melnibone, that palace where the Little Mermaid lives, Sealab, Bikini Bottom, and Pepperland from Yellow Submarine.

Just to start you off.

Not to mention COBRAs underwater base....

this would be one of the greatest finds ever!
