I've gotten the impression that most people (or at least alot of people) on the boards consider Return of the King to be the weakest of the LOTR movies... I may be totally wrong about that, but I'm curious to those who do feel that way why...

I've always felt it was easily the best of the three movies. Best action, most epic, and of course, a satisfying conclusion that you can't get in the first two parts of a three part story.

They are one movie to me. None is better than the other. The only distinction I will make is the seige on Helm's Deep in Two Towers is the best sequence of the trilogy

That's how I've always viewed them as well. Of course, I'm a huge Tolkien fan, and I've always considered Lord of the Rings as a single book(much like Tolkien himself did). Regardless, they are all amazing movies. :yay:

Ditto that. I love Return of the King, but like others have said it should be seen as one single book or story. As far as the movies go, I enjoyed all the crew was able to do in regard to making the action epic but I'm with Spider-fan in thinking that the siege on Helm's Deep is probably the best sequence in the trilogy. It's partly due to seeing something on that scale for the first time that made it amazing, but it definitely stands out as one of the best sequences put on film. :woot:

Agree 100%. That part where we see the massive army line up in front of Helm's Deep is great. It is the first true Medieval castle seige ever done on film (at least that I know of). The whole sequence is spectacular.

Yeah, it's one big movie to me with one big story. LOTR is a true trilogy and I can't pick one to call better or worse than the others. This is why I believe Return of the King won best picture and Fellowship of the Ring was just recently put in AFI's Top 100 list; to award the trilogy as a whole.

It is, but I think it was outdone by the Battle of Minis Tirith in ROTK. I just friggin' love it when the riders of Rohan show up. So awesome.

Agree 100%. ROTK got it the Oscar ending the trilogy. Fellowship and Two Towers had no shot of winning. I knew ROTK was going to win BP when Fellowship lost. AFI gave Fellowship the respect of starting it.

I wasn't wowed by that as much as Helm's Deep. The whole seige aspect was more spectacular to me, rather than just trying to destroy the city. Both are wonderful to watch, but Helm's Deep is just amazing.

thats odd, ROTK is considered the best in most places.

The easiest way for me to explain this is this way:

Whe1n I rented the first LOTR..I had no clue about anything, anyone, the books, hell I had no clue there was even a part 2 and 3. *I know ban me now*I was what? 20-21 when it came to DVD, so I watched the first one and I was amazed at how freakin awesome the story was, I loved everything about it. When it ended I was like WTF??? I thought everything would get solved in this one lol but reguardless So I give it a 10.0 in my book, then the second one came out (by this time I knew a 3rd was due also) and I really liked the second too, the battle was the greatest hour of any movie ever. But I didn't like it as much as the first one. Now when the 3rd one came out I was really excited for it, I watched it and I felt sad while watching it knowing it was the last one, and I also hated how quick the Ghost defeated everything, I didn't like that, I like battles to be played out more. So I rank them in the order they came out.

Return of the King is better than the Fellowship of the ring, but not better than Two Towers. As a some people here said, Helm's Deep sequences is something....I have no words to describe it.

That's what brought my enjoyment of Return of the King down. Minas Tirith was great, but the "ghost wave" didn't work. Helm's Deep had a much more satisfying conclusion. Also, seeing Gollum for the first time in The Two Towers was great. Over all, The Two Towers had that wow factor, while Return of the King while great, felt a little bit like more of the same.

What I enjoyed most about The Two Towers was the spectacle of it all, it was very fantasy-ish, and the fight at Helm's Deep was incredible.

However, I liked The Return of the King more because it was deeper emotionally and brought the main threads of the previous two movies together. Sam and Frodo's story really shone in the 3rd movie with the stairs of Cirith Ungol, Shelob, and the Cracks of Doom.

It was the emotional resonance that did it for me

As many have said, I look at The Lord of the Rings as one work, none being able to function without the other two. That being said, I think AFI should have ranked the film as one, instead of just the first part, in the top 100.

As looking at LOTR as one, I'll say I only really loved the first third of the story(that being the Fellowship). The other 2/3 was ok at best, it bored me, I don't think it was as good as the first part.

It hard for me to distinguish becasue to me LOTR is all one gialt movie. Though I have to agree with previos poster that the Battle at Helm's Deep was the best. that with the Rohan Army arriving at Minas Tirith pulling in a close second.

They are one movie to me. None is better than the other. The only distinction I will make is the seige on Helm's Deep in Two Towers is the best sequence of the trilogy

I agree completely, it was all shot as one big movie, one big script, one big story...

....EXCEPT each move has a different editor. And that does make a difference.

Why are people saying they find it so hard to pick which is best because they see it all as one.

Even if you see it all as one, then it would be what you call 'acts'.

Fellowship of the Ring- Act 1
The Two Towers- Act 2
Return of The King- Act 3

It's like asking which part of a play you liked best. There's a beginning, Middle and End. Nothing difficult about it folks ;)

Yeah, I agree. The movies should be taken as a whole (you don't get satisfaction watching just one), but that doesn't mean I can't pick a favorite. The Two Towers is easily my favorite one to watch.

Alright then. :oldrazz:

1. FOTR
2. ROTK
3. TTT

Like I said, they all rock. TTT being third does not mean that I hated the movie (It is amazing). Like others, I think the Battle of the Hornburg was one of the best battle scenes I have ever witnessed. Sadly though, one of the three has to be ranked number three. Maybe the reason it isn't my favorite is because of how different certain parts of the movie are compared to the books (especially Faramir). I love FOTR because that was my introduction to the world of Tolkien, so it always will have a special place in my mind. ROTK was just epic and an amazing movie, just like TTT, but I place it above TTT(just barely). To be clear, I'm referring to the Extended Editions of these movies.

Like I said before though, they are all awesome and I've watch each of them tons of times and they never get old.

It feel to #2 for me after reading the actual book. The scourging of the Shire and Bilbo/Frodo's departure actually brought a tear to my eye. :csad:
