Luke Cage Luke Cage show and the "N-word"

To be fair Jessica killed Reva under the control of Purple Man. She was not in control of her actions and felt a great amount of guilt over killing her.

It's one thing for Luke to forgive her for killing Reva while under mind control, it's another thing entirely to have Luke date, sleep with, have a kid with, and marry the person that physically killed his WIFE. That's just a bridge too far and makes Luke look bad.

Luke seemed to understand what it was like for Jessica after he was controlled by Purple Man as well. He almost killed Jessica also.

No he didn't, remember that he next time we see Luke after Jess tells him the truth he's under mind control himself. Luke's whole speech about forgiving her and saying she's not a piece of crap was just Killgrave screwing with Jess. Luke disappears afterwards.

The deception was the biggest issue. I don't think Jessica was planning on sleeping with him as it seemed to just happen in the moment. There isn't exactly a nice way or good time to say my rapist mind controlled me into murdering your wife.

She absolutely was planning to sleep with him. Go back and watch the first few episodes. Off top Jessica had been stalking Luke, we also see from her "stakeout" that she was attracted to him, then later SHE initiates their sexual encounter.

Thematically what Jessica did to Luke is supposed to show the cycle of abuse. Jessica victimized Luke in a similar way that she was victimized.

Hahah, no way is Marvel using the N word. I'd like to see it because of the world Luke is in, not just because he's black. But i doubt it'll happen.

The cast and crew have already confirmed that it'll happen.

Yeah I'm fine with it. I like that the Netflix shows keep pushing boundaries. With Daredevil it was violence and with Jessica Jones it was sexuality and now with Luke Cage it's with the N-word racism among other things

I wouldn't go that far, it really depends on who those black folks are. There are black folks that use it like it's a period at the end of a sentence and there are black folks that get angry when anyone uses it around them. I'd actually like to see that reflected in the show.

With the show being set in Harlem though it'd be weird for Luke to never hear it from anyone.

Very true. That being said, I'm against the N-word (or any profanity for that matter) being used in any Marvel TV series. I have a huge problem with cable or streaming TV shows featuring Black characters being allowed to casually use the N-word uncensored as part of everyday speech because it is "realistic" and "authentic", but those same TV shows won't allow the anti-gay F-word slur to be used as part of everyday slang. So I guess it's alright for us to be shown refering to each other by a racial slur, but it's a capital offense to show people throwing around anti-gay slurs even when those slurs aren't being thrown at gay people. I really hate the hypocrisy of Hollywood.

Saying the N-word but having the F-word be a no go would be extremely odd. The former is easily worse due to how offensive it is and if any of them were to be used I'd expect the F-word taking priority due to how often it's used in Alias.

while this is technically true, PG 13 movies can have the N word and remain PG 13 but if it has the F word multiple times it's R.

In all honesty, I wouldn't expect it not to be used. This is Luke Cage.

I'm surprised. It's out now, and the N word is in this series, quite a bit

African Americans talk this way among each other. They still do.

The show establishes that Cage doesn't like the word and hates being called that word. He has a whole monologue about it in one episode. So I mean, what can you do?

Look, I'm a Jewish white guy and everything, but this isn't my call. This show was overseen by a black showrunner. It has a mostly African American cast. So they were OK with it. I don't believe in censorship and censoring the artists. This is how they wanted the show to look and sound.

I'm not saying it's OK, but a lot of African Americans still use that word in casual conversation and everything. It's a part of rap and hip-hop culture. It's a part of life. It's not like we can be in denial of it. Plus a lot of them say it like not -er but -a. Again not saying it's the same, but it's different among the African American community. It's an acceptable term they can use with each other. Not acceptable for whites to use it, but African Americans, yes.

I liked the way it was used. It wasn't over used like the way Tarantino uses it. I like how Luke highlighted his disdain for it too. Some episodes it wasn't even used at all. Good job Netflix/Marvel.

Agreed.

It is a word that seems to be a part of many African American's vernacular so it seems more realistic for it to feature in the show.

It doesn't feel over used in the show like with how Tarantino uses it in his films.

Because Tarantino doesn't actually know how it's used. Luke Cage had a black showrunner that actually knows how the word is used within our community.

Hell the word was used more in one episode of Luke Cage than Tarantino used it in Pulp fiction, but because of HOW it was used it never feels out of place or excessive.

I don't think Tarantino over uses it really. Look at the characters he creates and the stories he tells. His last 2 films in particular. The dialogue fits the characters and that is all that matters. I don't recall the n word being used in Inglorious Basterds.

Never thought Tarantino overused it. There was always context supporting it's use whether it's an explicitly racist white person using it or black people using it as vernacular.

If Tarantino were black the controversy would be nonexistent.

Tarantino definitely uses it too much. To say otherwise is kidding yourself.

Yeah, I mean, I LOVE Tarantino, but even I admit he overuses it. He gets away with it because if theres any caucasian director working in Hollywood without a single racist bone in his body its Tarantino.

Some white people have been given a pass by us to use the N-word in the same context that we use it in everyday conversation. Most Latinos, OTOH, are given a free pass to use it all willy nilly since most Latinos are of Black African descent.
