Mystery/Thriller M. Night Shyamalan's Old

M. Night taking the Christopher Nolan approach. Should be interesting to watch at least. He's one of those directors where even when his films are bad, they're still a marvel to watch.

The films may or may not work but he at least tries new ideas.

Hoping he pulls this one off. I love Shyamlan through thick and thin, but he's one of those directors where despite his comeback he can still trip up. The guy has an ego. Hopefully it's been humbled from his past mistakes.

Plus didn't he basically fund Glass with his own money?

That's very generous. I watched part of The Last Airbender on TV until I realized watching paint dry would be more fun. Although I will admit that The Happening, as awful as it is, is definitely watchable since it's a laugh riot.

Not gonna lie: didn't hate Glass as much as some people but I'm pretty much done giving Shyamalan chances. His alleged comeback, which I was super happy about and had very high hopes for, seems to be petering out pretty damn fast.

Not that it was much of a comeback to begin with. Split is really fun but mostly coasts on the excitement of being a stealth sequel to his only genuinely great film (Unbreakable is the second best superhero film of all time and this is a hill I will die on), Glass has some great elements but it is an awkward poorly paced mess with dialogue so awful I genuinely think he had a ghost writer do touch-ups on Split and The Visit might not be his worst film but I certainly hate it more than any of his other movies.

His movie aren't insanely costly, that's why he still gets money.

Unpopular opinion incoming, but....

Glass is hands down the best of the Unbreakable trilogy and one of 2019's best and most underrated movies.

Curious to see what this movie's like.

I really liked Glass as well and I really enjoyed Servant even though I have no idea how directly involved he was with that show. I don't blame people for being done with him though, especially after some of his most recent stuff and for a while I was feeling exactly like that.

I really wasn't the biggest fan of The Visit and it took a couple of re-watches for me to appreciate Split, but damn at what he was able to bring out of McAvoy in that film. I am willing to give this a chance, because it does sound interesting, but I'm going into it with the lowest expectations and hopefully it ends up surprising me.

I know it's popular to bash Shyamalan but, come on, George A. Romero or Tobe Hooper never get bashed even though their last few decades of output were pretty bad. Shyamalan gave us a masterpiece in The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. And Signs is pretty damn good too. For that he'll always get a curiosity pass from me.

I just wish James Newton Howard would come back to score his films cause that collaboration was incredible. Hell, even his bad films would have incredible scores. Guess he's too expensive now for these smaller budgeted ones.

I never was the biggest fan of M. Night. Actually I've never seen a lot of his movies. I've only seen TLA, Glass, Unbreakable, Split, The Happening, and like the last 20 mins of Signs. I did really enjoy Split and Unbreakable.

However, I don't think it's a big mystery why he still gets to make films. As has been pointed out, his recent batch of movies post After Earth have been relatively cheap. And partially due to them being so low budget, they all make money. Quality aside.

The alleged premise/set up sounds cool. I just hope he's able to deliver.

Nah I don't think so. He still is very stuck in his ways and that shows he still has a massive ego.

He couldn't resist those nonsense twists in Glass. And I don't hate Glass like that, but clearly he couldn't resist doing those nonsense twists which really drove the movie down. Even The Visit had a twist, did it? He's been mocked, a lot of it justified, for the better part of a decade about his over-reliance on twists and he still insists on having them there. I mean come on, he had like 2-3 in there. It was like a parody.

He became a joke and still his pushes forward for the most part on the same path.

I think The Village is good. There. I said it. The most flawed out of his first four films but I still count it as good. I think the first 2/3 is pretty great but then once Lucius gets stabbed it doesn't quite live up to the rest. It's genuinely entertaining and intriguing, Howard's score is fantastic, Deakins work is great as usual, and Shyamalan does a great job with the characters, particularly Ivy who is one of his best characters.

I do like the twist and don't think it's bad. He didn't cheat and it all adds up. It's okay if one dislikes it, but does that make it bad? If so, why is it bad? I haven't heard an explanation yet. Just that people say they hate it.

I do like the twist and don't think it's bad. He didn't cheat and it all adds up. It's not exactly what people wanted but I don't think that's a valid criticism of something. I haven't quite heard a valid one with regards to the twist.

Probably still the best performance I've ever seen from Bryce Dallas Howard who I usually think is pretty bland.

I've always enjoyed The Village including the ending which now that I look back on was actually kind of genius and well done for its time IMO. The first half of that movie is really solid with some effectively creepy moments and fantastic performances from everyone involved. The cinematography and the score is pretty great too.

I'd rather watch that movie anyday over some of his of other films like Lady in the Water, The Visit, The Happening and After Earth which is truly his worst film IMO.

Yeah, I thought he'd learned his lesson after Split and his general resurgence, but in Glass he was back to his old ways. I don't hate the movie, but it's pretentious as all get out, with a lot of the same kind of tonal weirdness and contrived plot twists that marred much of his past work.

I would say Village was ahead of its time. I feel that without the Village we wouldn’t have gotten a film like TheVVITCH. I personally think Shyamalan shows flashes of filmmaking genius. Hitchcock would be proud of some of the Great stuff he’s done- but then again of his bad stuff, so would Ed Wood. He needs to focus on what made him great- The 6th Sense, Signs, The Village, Split, and stop doing ridiculous stuff unless he is making fun of himself.
