MAG: Massive Action Game

You couldn't possibly expect a game of this size to have good graphics. With 256 players all running around with explosions everywhere and whatnot, something somewhere has to give.

Well not to be sounding rude, but yes i do expect these graphics to be amazing i mean this is the Playstation 3 these graphics look like something that came out for the Playstation 2. But i can understand that the main focus is about the 256 players able to play all at the same time and thats cool but if there is a sequel to this game i hope they really do improve on these graphics. :D

The graphics look bad as well

Like Pan said, you can't expect a game of that size to look as good as the average size shooter like KZ2 or MW2. That said, I really don't think MAG looked bad per say. It definitely didn't look great or anything, but it looked sufficient enough

Does that really matter? They still had a full 256 people logged into the same game with no lag that I could see, one again, pretty cool

Servers tend to lag when there are thousands of players logged in at the same time. Not all the time, but it does happen. And zippers previous games have been pretty laggy. Hopefully this isnt the case though.

Yeah, I understand that, I was just saying even without all those people logged in, I thought it was pretty neat that they had such a huge battle going live without any noticeable hiccups

Here's some hands-on impressions I stumbled upon:

http://www.psu.com/MAG-Hands-on-Preview--a007507-p0.php

MAG, or Massive Action Game, stunned the masses when it was revealed at E3 2008. The game promised intense 256-player battles – not just skirmishes, but full-out wars. When the first MAG gameplay was revealed, however -- I’m not going to lie -- I was a bit underwhelmed. Sure, the fact that it ran at all was miraculous, but I was skeptical that the gameplay would be enjoyable. Now, however, I’ve had hands-on time with the game, and Zipper Interactive has convinced me that MAG will be magnificent when it arrives this fall.

The first thing to know about MAG is that, as the title implies, it is a massive experience. The war-torn, semi-urban map I played on with 255 others felt like an area from an MMO, not an online shooter. When you switch to the overhead map and view the buildings and terrain Google-earth style, the scale of the battle is astounding. That’s what MAG is all about: scale. From the basic soldiers to the eight-person squad leaders to the four-squad platoon leaders to the four-platoon company commander, everyone plays a role; some are simply more essential than others.

But I digress, for scale means very little without great gameplay. Zipper has quite a record of solid tactical gameplay with the SOCOM series, and the studio hasn’t disappointed here. That basic, fundamental satisfaction that comes by besting others in great shooters is present in MAG. Each time I got a kill and “+5 XP” popped up on screen, I felt an immediate sense of gratification. That is due to the tight, Call of Duty style aiming mechanics in conjunction with the massive arsenal of weapons spread across the three factions.

The factions are S.V.E.R., Raven, and Valor. S.V.E.R. (pronounced Sever) is composed of rogues who scrounge up whatever they can get their hands on, Raven is a high-tech, futuristic fighting force, and Valor -- the faction I joined -- is similar to the U.S. army. All factions have their own strengths and weaknesses, but I didn’t spend enough time with the game to really see that in action. I was promised, however, that no faction will be inherently “better” than another; all will be meticulously balanced – the MAG beta should help with that.

With such mammoth maps, foot soldiers and handheld guns can only do so much. There are a bevy of vehicles at players’ disposal, like jeeps, tanks, and helicopters. Additionally, once a team secures a particular point on the map, the team’s commander acquires the ability to call in airstrikes, which can really strike an opposing team’s weak point for massive damage.

At any given time, there are several team objectives on-screen, such as capturing a certain point, or, adversely, repelling the enemy. In a game as immense as MAG, communication and teamwork are integral to success. Of course, as you and Zipper both know, gamers aren’t always the most cooperative people. To generate that elusive cooperative environment, Zipper rewards squads that do work together and communicate to complete objectives with additional XP, as opposed to punishing players who don’t work alongside their team.

Visually, MAG is no Killzone 2, but to expect that level of graphical fidelity from a game eight times the players (of Killzone 2's 32 players) online is unreasonable. In the E3 build, I experienced some framerate drops when the action got heavy, and witnessed an animation bug or two upon death, but for an unfinished game with 256 players, it looks quite nice. Zipper will continue to work on the game over the coming months, and should be able to release a polished product at launch. I also expect heavy post-launch support, as it is an online-only game.

MAG is a quality experience, even at this early stage. Don’t worry – I’m not simply being magnanimous. From the half-hour I spent with the game, I’m confident that it will be a dominant force in Sony’s 2009 line-up, and will be played for many months -- if not years -- to come.

I am intrested to what the people will say about this game and if it has no bugs and has great reviews then i will buy this game.

New video on the the three sides you can choose.

I'm leaning toward Raven.

Valor

S.V.E.R.

man those concepts look good, i am between Valor and Raven but i think i would go Raven just because of the High Tech benefits. SVER just looks dumb.

Raven looks cool but I like Valor the best. The hockey mask is what I don't like about SVER.

Valor looks like Military which is cool but Raven looks tactical and looks like they will have the better weapons

Raven looks far too blatently badass for my taste. I already know that they're going to be the popular choice.

SVER just looks dumb. The hockey mask and the stupid almost-but-not-quite-sideways-hat drives me nuts.

Valor all the way!

MAG BETA Invading North America & Europe

Shijima, the Franchise Producer for MAG, previously stated that MAG’s beta would only be available to Europeans. But thanks to some clarification from an SCEA representative, non-European PS3 owners have reason to be relieved.

Shijima’s original post stated:

“Sorry to pee on your proverbials all, but MAG is likely to be tested by the Beta Trial community only in Europe. If plans change then you’ll be made aware of how you can register, but I just don’t want people getting their hopes up unnecessarily.”

Apparently, the post was worded incorrectly. It was most likely meant to say “tested by the Beta Trial community only, in Europe.” AbigaleSS from the official PlayStation forums had this to say regarding Shijima’s post.

“I just wanted to clear up any misunderstandings about Shijima’s post on the European forum. His comments were directed to his community and it is a mistake to think that the Beta will only be comprised of Europeans. We will be releasing more information on the Beta for MAG in the future, but we can confirm that it will include users from North America.

I know some of you already assumed that but I wanted to make sure you had the official word on it.”

And there you have it. MAG’s beta will be conducted in North America and Europe (so far), and we’ll keep you up to speed on the beta as it draws closer to release.

Hopefully we will get a start date on the Beta soon.

I wonder if they'll package it with a game like InFamous had Uncharted 2 beta. Does Sony have a first party title coming out soon?

I don't think is. At least with in the next couple of months. I hope it isn't going to be another LBP fiasco and you just have to be lucky to get in.

What happened with LBP? Is the new R&C coming out fairly soon?

I think they might use Qore as one of the means to distribute the Beta, it's just my hunch though!!!:o:D

What happened with LBP? Is the new R&C coming out fairly soon?

Websites like Eurogamer and Gamespot were given codes and gave them out to those that were signed up to their sites. Usually it was done through some outrageous contest or a first come first serve thing that would usually crash the prospective site.It was a mess.

Oh wow, that sounds like a horrible mess. Hopefully that kind of crap doesn't matter with this.

I am not into the hole commanding thing its just not my think I would rather just play the game.
