As I've stated before, I like the X-Men but I'm not a huge follower. Like many others here, I've yet to read a story where he really stood out as a great character.C'mon X-fans...give me a reason to get into the character !

X-men: first class + Astonishing x-men helped me like that *****.

...wow, I just realized what i wrote. That's just great.

LOL! Ain't it though?

Seriously, what was it about those two stories?

Well, in first class, we get a way less uptight Scott. In Astonishing, Lately, we get into his head. Scott is more or less badass right now...

AND HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE POWERS!!

But I should ask you first, Did you hate him or something? Is there a reason you never got into him?

I hate the chaarcter, but i damn sure respect him.

He ditched his wife and son to be with Jean Grey.

He made out with Emma Frost right on top of Jean Grey's grave.

No reason in particular. I don't hate the character like some do. I just always found him to be kinda uptight and dull.

:wow: Do tell! :wow:

Cyclops just kicks ass.

You want to love him? Play X-men legends 1 and 2 and try not to use him.

I dnno I just love Cyke, he's one o my Favorite X-men.......But Angel is my Favorite so that might say something abou my taste.

Read the first 30 isses or so of X-Factor.

From what i've noticed, most people seem to dislike Cyclops because he's purposely written to be the guy that fan favorites play off of.
They want characters like Wolverine or Gambit to be cool so they make Cyclops all wimpy and straight laced so that they have something to disagree with and rebel against.

I personally love Cyclops because I remember how he used to be.
Cyclops used to be everybody's favorite. He used to be the Wolverine of comics. The original X-men was Cyclops' team in every sense of the word.
Now we rarely get to see him written well anymore. (except in Astonishing X-men recently)

If you wanna like him more look at it this way.
-He's been the single biggest mainstay of the X-men since it's creation. The X-men wouldnt exist without him. He's their Captain America.
-He's easilly one of the greatest tacticians and team leaders in the Marvel universe (Personally I place him right after Cap)
-He's potentially one of the most dangerous mutants alive and not even entirely because of his mutant power. He has the complete, unquestioning loyalty of the X-men, he's in charge of the Xavier institute, he's basically the leader of what remains of the mutant population of earth. His tactical genius and his influence among mutants make him a major player.
-His ability means he can litterally kill people just by looking at them.
It's recently been established that he's never let loose with his powers before. That he always holds back. That said, looking over his more impressive power feats it's not hard to imagine how much damage he could actually do.
-He has nailed 2 of the hottest chicks in the MU several times. he's a playa.

If that doesnt help you think more highly of him.... well check out this respect thread. It's got several of his better feats.

True. However, it should be noticed that many if not most of Cyke's fans like him because he is NOT one of the "cool kids". Not only does it create a healthy balance to other characters, it is also something a lot of comic book fans can relate to. Cyclops may be tough, strong and brave, but underneath that beats a heart of a true geek. He is quiet, insecure and socially awkward but overcomes those qualities because his team needs him to be a fighter and a leader.

EDIT. And while we're at it, a couple of nice Cyclops moments:

I loved Cyclops up until he hooked up with that skank Emma and trashed his marriage

You either like him or you don't. I can't make you do anything.

Actually, I don't either especially like or dislike him. He's just....there.

To be frank, while I've been a fan of the X-Men since I was about 10-11 when the 90's cartoon started coming out, I was never really a huge Cyclops fan until I was in college at 18-19 years old in 2000-2001.

And I can list the specific events and stories that helped me get an appreciation of Cyclops, and interestingly none came from the current 616 comics of the time.

- Despite the small role he had, James Marsden in 2000's X-MEN helped. I felt for what little he did, he did it well. Such a shame he would be utterly wasted in both sequals.

- X-MEN: EVOLUTION, as in the Kid's WB series that ran for 4 seasons (52 episodes) featured Cyclops heavilly. He was one of the majority of the cast who were teenagers as per the network's insistance, but it worked out better than some people say. After all, many of these characters BEGAN as Teenagers, like Scott, Jean, Iceman, Rogue, etc. This show featured a Cyclops who was still learning, so he wasn't the "stiff boyscout leader" that many people hold against him. He made mistakes. He was inexperienced. And he even joked around during Danger Room sessions at times. But at his core he was right. He was far more comfortable being Cyclops the X-Man than he was being Scott Summers, trying to tell Jean that he liked her (and they both had romantic competition!). And while the "adult" X-Men never formerly gave him the title of "field commander", he rose to that role by his own virtue. Season 3, especially the first 2-3 episodes, really saw him rose into a commanding, kick-arse character willing to even tell Logan when he was dead wrong. True, Rogue was easily the main character at that point, but Cyclops never got more airtime in a cartoon.

- Mark Millar's ULTIMATE X-MEN launch of about 33 or so issues presented another version of Cyclops free of 616 constraints, like "you are not as cool as Wolverine or Gambit". Millar's Cyclops had that same social awkwardness of the classic, but he also regained something that, in 2001 or so, the 616 version lacked; cajones. Millar's Ultimate Cyclops took NO guff. He was hardcore in combat. He didn't just step back and LET Wolverine be " Mr. Cool", he rivaled him at every turn. When Logan left Cyke for dead, he clawed his way to survival in RETURN OF THE KING, Millar's last and argueably best arc on UXM, jolly spanking the clawed berserker for revenge and then mending fences, as well as leading his team to victory against Magneto WITHOUT the aid of Professor X. Millar sells Cyclops on you when he blasts a Sentinal in half in issue #1. Ultimate X-Men has had several writers since Millar (Bendis, Vaughan, and Kirkman, with an Austen 2-parter thrown in too) but NONE have written Ultimate Cyclops with as much grit and vigor.

From there, it took several "alternate" versions for me to see the essence and heart of Cyclops' character. In the Mighty Marvel Fashion, he's usually flawed in that the X-Men stuff comes way more naturally to him than the normal social graces, as well as having that power of his that he can't control. Uncanny X-Men stories from the 70's and 80's and the first few years of X-FACTOR, as well as Morrison's New X-Men and in some ways Whedon's ASTONISHING, also are good places for 616 Cyclops. I'm just telling you the route I took to appreciate him.

Now? As 2006 comes to a close, he may be my second favorite X-Man, right behind Wolverine and neck-in-neck with Colossus. My liking for Wolverine hasn't increased and has actually declined since I was 18, but Scott's gone up expotentially. Those early X-Men stories where he still had grit before he was forced to back off in favor of Wolverine in the late 80's into the 90's were incredible.

Grant Morrison brought Scott to a new level of insecurity as he reeled from being melded with Apocalypse and Jean began to manifest her phoenix powers again, causing a rift in their marriage. The perfect little crack for Emma Frost to exploit for her own personal gain.

Scott truely did love Jean. Emma caught him at a weak point and after Jeans death he was ready to walk away from Ms.Frost and the X-Men. Jean from the future saw this as the turning point that would eventually lead to Sublime Beasts domination of the Earth. So, using her vast Phoenix powers, Jean caused Emma and Scott to embrace at her gravesite in a attempt to mend his broken heart and keep the X-Men together for the sake of the future.

I miss Jean as much as the next guy, but Scott and Emma being together has caused so much turmoil it's quite interesting.

And Joss Whedon is making Scott a bad ass. I couldn't be happier with Slim Summers right now.

Dread and Purple Man's posts really have helped me want to read up more on Scott Summers. I really see how the movies only added to the "Cyclops is just kinda there" attitude. I think I'll go out and get an Astonishing TPB and the Ultimate issues mentioned. I glanced at one before, the first one I think, where Logan shows up one minute and bangs Jean the next leaving Scott to lok like a punk. Did he ever get revenge on Logan for it?

As with a few of you, Cyclops and Beast were always on my bottom when it came to favorite X-Men. When I got out of school and joined the Navy I started to respect him more and more. When I look back at the stuff he has had to go through I find that he has alot of qualities (mainly leadership) that many people could benifit from. But.....then came Grant Morrison and jacked it all up.

- Very true Scott and Emma's relationship is more interesting....but Scott and Jean's was better. That was love....not lust. Scott grew WAY more with Jean than he has with Emma. Read some of the old stuff, even early issues of X-Factor and you will see what I am talking about. Emma is very manipulative - Jean was not. Scott was himself around her, is the guy we are seeing now Scott - or someone that he wants Emma to see.

- Besides Jean or Emma I think Logan knows Scott the best. In issue #1 of Astonishing is the scence that defines who Scott is now (or was until this arc coming up). Logan calls him out on ditching Jean for Emma, what does Scott do? Blasts him cause he has no excuse.

- The biggest issue I have with Scott now is that his loyalty to Xavier has been crushed. I don't like that, I liked it when he believed in Xavier's dream - what does he stand for now? Same thing? Different thing? Who knows - all I know is that he would always (try) to choose the right, and I respected that.
