My roomie encounter some troubles with the internet and attempted to get it to start working again while I was at work. Now it seems the data on the router has been erased making it unsecured and with just the name Linksys.

Is there a way to get our old settings back? We have a USB stick with the old settings on it (I think) that we used sometimes when we had issues with the router. Would that help?

The question is, how would we go about making the router secured again?

Open up a browser like firefox or whatever and key in the address 192.168.1.1 and that'll take you to the admin panel. It'll ask you for a username and a password. If it's not got any security on it (i.e. anyone can type that and access your config panel to change the settings) then the default depends on the model.

Default user names:

  • Linksys BEFW11S4, WRT54G: admin
  • Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Ethernet routers: Administrator
  • Linksys Comcast routers: comcast
  • All other Linksys routers: [none]
Default passwords:
  • Linksys BEFW11S4: [none]
  • Linksys Comcast routers: 1234
  • All other Linksys routers: admin

after you login to the router go to basic wireless settings and setup your SSID. Here put whatever you want your router to be named.
Then go to wireless security and I would select WPA personal and add your password to connect to it. Make it something unique with Uppercase, numbers and even symbols if you can.
Then go to the administration tab and change the routers password, so only you will know what the login for the router is and no knucklehead walking past with a laptop can go in and change things on you. I would even change the IP address on the router so it isn't 192.168.1.1

Good! Thanks guys my router is now secured again! Thanks for the help. :D
