So, my aunt recently got a computer. She wanted to get internet from my modem, so she purchases a D Link Router. She has troubles ever getting it connected in the first place, eventually she calls her friends over and they hook it up somehow, wellll...ever since there's been issues and it's only when the router is hooked up. Yet this damn woman refuses to believe that it's her router...and thinks it's my computer.

I cleaned my computer...I have nothing that could cause the issue, yet..she refuses to believe this. And the only time the internet connects seamlessly without problems is when the cable modem is directly hooked to my PC. Add the router and you get lights on the modem going out, loosing connection entirely for both computers...but pop that wire into the PC again, and it's all gone...well except that the sync light on my modem is out still for some odd reason.

What the hell is going on?

It's the router. I hate routers. I have gone through far too many problems with wireless routers in such a short period of time. I have gone through 3 routers since people in my family got a laptop. I first had a D-Link like yourself. It sucked. I would be on AIM and it would constantly reconnect so I kept signing off and on AIM. It would occasionally have a connection problem where it was a pain in the ass to get it working. We eventually got rid of the D-Link and ended up with a Netgear. The Netgear was far better than the D-Link... but that isn't saying much. The Netgear occasionally dropped connection and for some reason would not display images very well... really long load times for images. We ended up just returning the Netgear and got a Linksys. The Linksys is better than the Netgear and I don't really ever have any connection problems but every once in a long while something can/will arise. For some reason it won't allow me to send/or take files from other people via file transfers on AIM. This only happens on AIM. We tried port forwarding and many things... just won't work. To cap this big story off... screw your aunt. It's the router. Force her to either buy a very good router (Linksys or Netgear maybe, usually costs around $50-$100 for a good one) or shut off her net by getting rid of the horrible router. I love what wireless routers can possibly do... but they need to actually work all the time for me to like them.

Yeah, D-Link sucks balls

1) What is the problem that is occurring?

2) What model router?

My Linksys Router will at times just drop my internet connection. It can be a real pain in the ass. When we finally move out of our townhouse I told the wife I am setting up a LAN in our house with a Server and a good Cisco router. But the theater rooom will definitely come first.

Ugh. The ***** refuses to believe it's her router. She's having some reconnect it AGAIN tommorrow.
