Alright. So I got this Linksys Wireless-B router from a friend. He gave me The Router, Power cord and a Ethernet cable. I looked at some videos online and I plugged all the Wires correctly. The Power light is on, Wireless-B light is on, 1 Ethernet port light is on and Internet light is on the router.

Problem:

First off when I try to use the connection on my Ipod Touch, it comes up with 80-90 strength, I connect to it but it doesn't work.

Second, my internet just doesn't work and goes into "Offline Mode"

Lastly, I found an old Linksys PCI Adapter Card I've had for a while. Do I need this?

Thanks in advance.

Dont know what set up you have at home but typically if you are setting a wireless network up its not as simple as just plugging your internet connection into the box.

For example on mine i have to go into the system settings of the router so i can tell it my user name and password of my internet provider, normally its 192.168.0.1 in the browser to access that.

As for the pci card, if your pc is connected via the ethernet cable no you wont need that card but if you choose to move your pc away from the router and the ethernet cable wont reach then you will need it to connect.

Alright Ill try the 192. tell you if it works.

Ok well 192. doesn't work. I type in admin as pass but it doesn't work.

Well good news is that wifi is working in the house but its alittle weak for me being right next to it. The only problem is that I cant use the internet on my desktop. Suggestions anybody?

Alright the 192 thingy worked but It took me to a westell website(my modem brand) What do I do now?

Still need help guys! Malice where are you!!?!??! :csad:

I am here....:)

First rule of thumb....get a machine running on it via WIRE.....once that is done...then go wireless.

Connect a pc/mac to it via a cable.
wait 20 seconds or so
(not sure how to do this on a mac....)
but on a PC type START > RUN > cmd.exe -- then type IPCONFIG in the box
If you are getting an address, then you are good.

open a web browser and try going to
192.168.1.1
or
192.168.0.1

If neither of those work...
I would consident using a paperclip and RESET the router to factory default (usually on the back that you can use to reset it)

once you do that, start at the top again, and try it.

Just to add to Malice's post.

You definitely should reset it to factory default, just press and hold down a pin in the pin hole at the back labeled RESET for about 10-20secs.

Make sure you can get online when you are directly connected to the router.

When you type IPCONFIG on the command prompt you are looking for your computer's IP address which would be 192.168.x.x

What you need to type in your browser is the DEFAULT GATEWAY which is typically 192.168.x.1

You would see that when you do the IPCONFIG command also.

When you login to the router make sure that WEP is disabled (for now). Just to test that you can connect via wireless. You would want to enable WEP later to prevent other users from piggy backing on your router.

Yup....you got it....
Once you reset it, then you can change the config....

With the wireless router connected, I can't go on the internet on my computer. It says Local Network Connection is Weak or not there or something along those lines.

I reset the router.

I knew about the 192... but I can't see to connect to the internet through my computer. Do I need to set up another Network connection or something?

Once again thanks for the time guys. :woot:

OK...lets confirm.
You can get to the internet just fine, on a cabled PC, correct?

OK....
Is your wireless connection on your router encrypted? or is it open?

Honestly I'm not even sure I have a wireless connection big guy.

I checked my Network Connections via Control Panel and it's just my Local Area Connection. Does that even matter?

If you are trying to connect to the router without the use of a network cable from your pc, you are going to need that PCI wireless adapter you were on about in the first post.

No I just want the basic set up:

Linksys router connected to my wired router
Linksys router connected to the back of my tower.

Hold up...

Is this my Network Adapter?!?

That looks like an ethernet card...not a wireless card.
All the wireless cards that go in desktops...have antenna on the back

Alright I don't no what happened, I opened up the big guy and put that card in and now it works! I'm just struggling on how to adjust my settings. It says something about DHCP. The wifi connection comes up on my Itouch and it says I connect but I can't use it.

I just unplugged it and plugged my old setup back in to type this message to you guys.

I'm pretty much just stuck at the setup screen on 192...

Still need help!

Just to clear everything up, cause it seems like all my words are in a jumble.

I just installed the D LINK card above. I tried plugging one of the ethernet cables in there and it didn't work so I went back to the basic setup I've been trying to use. I finally got to use the 192.168.1.1 and got to the Linksys Config website. I don't know how to config it at all.

My connection name has come up on my Ipod touch and it tells me I do connect but it doesn't work. Plus I can;t use the internet on my desktop which the router is connected to.
