NEW YORK (AP) -- A peacock that roamed into the parking lot of a Burger King in New York City was beaten by a man who insisted it was a vampire.

Animal control officials in Staten Island say the bird was beaten so fiercely that most of its tail feathers fell out and it had to be euthanized.

The seven-year-old male peacock wandered into the restaurant parking lot and perched on a car hood last week. Charmed employees had been feeding it bread when the man appeared.

A restaurant worker says the man grabbed the bird by the neck, hurled it to the ground and started stomping it. She says when he was asked what he was doing, he responded, "'I'm killing a vampire!"'

Employees called police, but the man ran when he saw them

I've recently read Stephen King's Cell and I couldn't help thinking of that novel when I read this on CNN. Another sad reminder that the real world will always be crazier than any fiction. :(

should read:
"insane sadistic bastard on drugs decides to sacrifice a bird to a new-age satanic god in the shape of a double-cheeseburger"

i hope they catch the filthy bastard and call on 20 strippers to stomp on him with 5 inch high heels until he can see his lungs

Gotta love NYC, man.

jag

Vampire birds?, what's next vampire trees?

This is why I hate New York.

This is why I love New York. Crazy stuff here man, but it all leads for good entertainment.

When you see a homeless man against the wall rubbing his nipples, residents just paying no mind, and tourists taking pictures of it, you know you're in New Yawk.

*sigh* Humanity is on the decline.

This sounds like a worthy punishment for the moron.

So you hate new york because a man beat the hell out of a pea cock? Ooook.

You act as if things worse like this hasn't happened in places other than my city. For hundreds of years as well.

NEW YORK - A peacock that roamed into a fast-food restaurant parking lot was attacked by man who vilified the bird as a vampire, animal-control authorities said.

Beaten so fiercely that most of his tail feathers fell out, the bird was euthanized, said Richard Gentles, a spokesman for the city’s Center for Animal Care and Control.

“It’s just unbelievable that someone would do something to a poor, defenseless animal and do it in such a cruel fashion,” he said.

The peacock, a male several years old, wandered into a Staten Island Burger King parking lot and perched on a car hood Thursday morning. Charmed employees had been feeding him bread when the man appeared.

He seized the iridescent bird by the neck, hurled it to the ground and started kicking and stomping the creature, said worker Felicia Finnegan, 19.

“He was going crazy,” she said.

Asked what he was doing, she said, the attacker explained, “’I’m killing a vampire!”’

Employees called police, but the man ran when he saw them. Authorities were looking for the attacker, described as being in his teens or early 20s.

It was not clear how the bird made his way to the Burger King, but a Staten Island resident who raises pea***** said he had given some to a person who lives near the restaurant.

when is comes to vampires most people just refuse to see the truth.

Alleged bird beater had wild weekend

STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Police say they've collared the man they believe administered a fatal beating to a peacock because he thought it was a vampire.

Police sources told the Advance last night that cops arrested John N. Potts, 32 -- who lists his stepfather's house on Surfside Plaza in Tottenville as his address but may, in fact, be homeless -- in connection with Thursday's avian assault.

Potts was picked up just before 7 p.m. yesterday, after he sparked a domestic disturbance at the stepfather's house, capping a wild weekend for a man described by one source as emotionally disturbed.

Sources said he quarreled with his stepfather, menaced him with a shovel, and said, "I'll smash your face."

He then jumped into the waters of the Raritan Bay off Sprague Avenue, the shovel still in his hands, a police source said.

Arriving cops coaxed Potts out of the water, the source said, and as they investigated, determined that Potts was involved in the attack on the peacock.

They also produced a witness to the assault, who identified Potts, the source said.

The peacock had wandered into the parking lot of the Burger King at Page Avenue and Amboy Road in Tottenville Thursday morning, and jumped onto the hood of a car.

That's when the 5-foot-6-inch, 135-pound Potts showed up, cops say. According to witnesses, he grabbed the helpless bird by its neck, threw it to the ground, and stomped and kicked it repeatedly. He yelled, "I'm killing a vampire!" and ripped off his shirt during the attack, witnesses said. The mortally injured peacock had to be put down.

The next day, police arrested Potts for trespassing, after he entered the property of a Surfside Plaza resident, the source said. He spent the night in jail and was released after a court appearance Saturday, the source said.

Yesterday morning, he was back in trouble again -- cops issued him a summons after catching him with marijuana, the source said. Then, later in the day yesterday, he went to his stepfather's house and initiated the disturbance that ended with his dip in the bay with a shovel, according to the source.

Potts faces charges of menacing and criminal possession of a weapon for the shovel incident, and aggravated animal cruelty and torturing and injuring an animal.

Felicia Finnegan, a 19-year-old Burger King employee who witnessed the attack when she went out to feed the bird bread, said she was relieved about Potts' capture.

"I'm very happy that they caught him. A lot of people had been seeing him around, doing all kinds of crazy things," she said. "I think he should definitely go to jail and probably get evaluated. He's a sick person."

She added, "I feel better knowing that they caught him, and that he won't do something like that again, or something worse."

Ms. Finnegan said she was surprised by the worldwide attention the story has gotten, adding that people have looked up her MySpace.com account to offer her condolences.

"People are e-mailing me from Seattle and Florida," she said.

Anyone else find it ironic that there's an outpouring of grief for the peacock when it was killed at a Burger King?

People like that just need to be locked up and medicated. He's not just nuts, he's dangerous.
