After months of negotiations, Netflix has closed a deal for its newest original series Marco Polo, a nine-episode drama of politics, manipulation and deadly warfare among clashing empires. Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg (Kon-Tiki) are directing the first episode before they go off to helm Pirates Of The Caribbean 5. The project, originally set up at Starz, will premiere on Netflix in late 2014.

The series, created and executive produced by John Fusco (Hidalgo), set in 13th century China, a world replete with astonishing martial arts, sexual intrigue, political skullduggery and spectacular battles. “John Fusco and his team have created a timeless tale of power, adventure, betrayal and lust that combines deft storytelling and cinematic ambition,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer. Added TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein: “With the glowing success of series like House Of Cards and Orange Is The New Black, it’s clear that Netflix is breaking tremendous ground in the realm of streaming original content. We could not be more excited to partner with them on this project, along with the creative tour de force of John Fusco and his talented team.”

Good to see Netflix jumping on the historical drama train too.

A historical adventure does seems like a good fit for them. Very excited to see how this turns out.

Anyone saw it ?
I'm 8 episode in, the show is ok, good production value, the lead is average but there are some cool characters and different Kung Fu styles which look great.
There is also some nudity but it's not too gratuitous.

Done with the season.
Satisfying final episode, the story arc got its foreclosure and it started new openings for the next season.
The baddest characters so far : the Monk and the ****e spy.

I just started watching this show and loving the visuals so far. The story is good too.

I'm about 4 episodes in and I'm mostly liking it so far.

The pro critics were merciless against it but it seems the general audience that's bothered to watch it has liked it on some level.

We'll see how I feel when I've finished it.

Spoilers below:

I just finished it, and while it was pretty good overall, I really think the show could benefit from a little levity here and there. Not meaning they should have jokes, or even the frequent humor of say, Orange is The New Black, but a little bit of a break from the constant hard stares and pursed lips would go a long way.

The latter half of the season, I think, was a lot better than the first. The story seemed to really pick up and the more interesting characters began to get more exposure. Of all the characters I found Polo himself to be a lot less interesting than say, Hundred Eyes, the warrior princess, or even Kublai -who is given a great deal more depth than almost anyone.

The Chancellor made for a good villain, and his final showdown with Hundred Eyes was excellent. In fact, the action sequences were usually pretty great, albeit few and far between. I wasn't a fan of them skipping over certain battles- it's a personal irk when shows (or movies) lead up to a big battle, and then immediately skip to the aftermath.

I'll be on board for season two, the twist ending was a very nice hook.

How am I only now hearing about this? I love historical shows.

I finished what was available. I enjoyed it quite a bit. The titular character is not as interesting as the other characters, which is a bummer, but every time an episode ended I was like, "ok, one more. Just one more." And now it's done.

Some of the big battles being skipped ahead was a bit annoying but the drama was mostly enough to keep me watching.

I just finished, I thought it was good, hope there's more to come.

Pretty amazing that they made Marco Polo one of the least interesting characters in his own show.

Nice to see Benedict Wong get a role in which he is allowed to shine.

that footbinding scene might be the worst thing i've ever seen in a show/movie. Stuck in my head bad. So gross

this was Kublai's show. He was amazing and i bet will totally be overlooked for awards. That actor totally destroyed his body for the part too
