Mark Millar's Many Thoughts On Superman

I dont see underhanded tactics. To me SR is a failure and Mark Millar is an alternative to that disgrace and that`s what he is doing. Proposing an alternative director and story.

It`s not that Singer wont get another job because he is obviously a great director and i`m looking forward for Valkyrie but he is just not right for Superman.

Ugh.. Superman Returns haters... they want a reboot of Superman. They makes me sick to my stomach.

Why is it so hard for you to accept that other people did not like Superman Returns? I am mystified by how personal you seem to take this stuff. Whether you like it or not, there is a group of Superman fans who don't like Superman Returns. I'm sorry, but thats how it is.

Even if you didn't like Superman Returns, why is Mark Millar the one to "save Superman".

Yes but would you really want someone taking over the reigns that would use such underhanded tactics to do so? It's not very Superman is it.

I would, hey singer had his shot and blew it, now let some one else try and lets get out of the donner verse already

Don't know. Perhaps because there is no one else. Millar, Maggin, Waid, one of these guys has to develop the basic steps for a new movie (or all of them). And then we should get a good Hollywood screenwriter.

So unless Millar, Maggin, or Waid is involved, there can't be a Superman movie? Hmmm.

Why do you object to that? I thought you didnt like SR that much...

I don't know if we can find some guys in Hollywood who truly understand Superman. Superman's imagine is so demolished by "Lois & Clark", "Superman Returns", "STAS" and most of the post-crisis comic material, so I doubt that there are so many guys out there that really "get" the authentic Superman. We need something fresh and yet traditional.

Well I think your aim is to get them on as consultants, which is a possibility going forward. You're definately not going to see these guys as screenwriters. Maybe story credits...

yeah. I don't think that good comic book writers are automatically able to write a good screenplay.

But without these guys we may end up with that Borg Superman from Superman Lives! or Abram's "Krypton didn't explode" travesty.

Even a sequel with Singer might feature consultants commisioned by WB.

people still arguing, i don't think millar understands the characters and should not do a superman film, just give me a sequel thats so awesome people forget the flaws of SR.

Everytime a movie in a comic book series doesn't turn out to be a blockbuster it doesn't demand a reboot. Superman Returns isn't a classic, but it wasn't a Batman & Robin bomb either.

Superman Returns didn't do anything to the franchise that demands that WB destroys the current builds a whole new continuity. Sure the story wasn't great in that it was a little boring but that can be fixed. The current cast is solid, I wouldn't miss Bosworth if she were replaced, but Routh and Spacey are really good leads for a Superman series. There's no need for a reboot, just better material.

If WB wanted to reboot they should have done it in 2006 rather than resurrect the original series, Quest for Peace is the type of movie you reboot after not Superman Returns.

ya but if a person thinks the first one has tons of flaws would they really be excited about seeing another one?

if it had brainiac you would,(crosses fingers and hopes)

I think Superman is the kind of character that even if people didn't care for the previous installment, they will go see the next one if it looks like it will be fun.

He is a Pop/American Icon

Well I read some of Millar's thoughts and I thought Singer took the Jesus thing too far. Sheesh.

I actually like Millar as a writer. He comes up with interesting twists and concepts on old characters, but he usually takes it too far. For example his Marvel Knights run on Spider-Man was pretty brilliant overall, but he focuses too much on the hero vs. supervillain throughout history and "the government corporations funding supervillains at the beginning" nonsense and creates the one really weak aspect of that interesting run. Then with Civil War he got so caught up in making it a parable for Bush and the Iraqi War/the administration stealing our civil liberties that he forgot to make it a good fully fleshed out and well told story (it probably didn't help Joe Quesada is breathing down his neck was asinine ideas like "And then Peter Parker takes off his mask!").

I imagine he may come up with some cool ideas for Superman but a writer would then need to come in and rewrite his draft extensively to make a coherent and well paced movie out of it.

As for this being legit...I don't know. I think he is too much of a fanboy and not enough of a businessman if there is truth in it. You can gush how you always wanted to do this after you get the gig. If there really is a closed door attempt for WB to coup Singer with another director and movie (I hope not Bay or Ratner, or this will suck) then you don't go sound the trumpets six months in advance on the internet. He may kill it for himself. As for possible directors, I dunno. For some reason the idea of Speilberg dong a Superman movie brings a smile to my face, but with Indy IV, I think he is done with popcorn movies and would not do it.

Also, I'm not sure it sounds any better than continuing the Donner continuity with MOS. At least that is moving into supervillain territory and we have done most of hte Christ story with SR. Millar may just reset that and get more fevorish with the material.

I truly question this kind of thinking. So what if he's an American icon? Thats the defense DC readers always use against Marvel "DC's heroes are more iconic." Who gives a damn? Being iconic does not make you interesting. I think people put way too much into the iconic status.

Didn't the filmmakers and WB already make this mistake? Thinking the fact that its Superman would be enough to sell the movie?
