Mark Millar's Many Thoughts On Superman

The production design of Superman Returns was fantastic.

SOCKO!!!

Jason was a very important reason for it. Beautiful.

I'm still a relative noob so I'm sure this comment has been made a million times already but I don't care. I'm not kidding when I say Jason was one of the things that distracted me from the story because I kept thinking about Brodie and T.S.'s conversation in the food court.

That'd be so such badass if Geoff Johns do the sequel with Bryan Singer.

I agree with Millar that , I think there is a problem with the current francise meaning SR. I think that it was a mistake for Singer to hitch his wagon to the Donner films . At the same time IMO the Superman myth has been redo this decade with Smallville.

Yes , I know there are fans who hate it and Welling , but it has basically been Superman minus the costume. We've had, the Rise of Lex, Clark's origins and growing into a hero, his beginning bond with Lois, etc. I think if you're gonna do a restart or a sequel you have to add something new to the table .

The Chris Reeve films explored the Relationship between Superman and Lois Lane, Lois and Clark showed us who Clark Kent really was as opposed to Superman, and Smallville Showed us how Lex Luthor turned to the darkside. I never felt the Singer film really did that . I never showed us why the world needs Superman even though that was supposed to be one of the plot threads.

I think any filmmaker should show the world what makes the MOTS relevent in the 21st century and why the world would needs him. I also think the public needs to have a hunger for his return .

The movie rocks. It's a classic. Bryan and the gang did it so right. They made Donner proud.

And that's not easy to do.

Enjoy it next week,

That's really too bad. I thought Geoff had a better handle on Superman than SInger's ridiculous deadbeat dad angle and 'baby daddy' from Maury and Springer. Good thing his Action comics run has been better than that.

It's weird, I never thought that Superman came across as a deadbeat dad. I interperted the point as Superman/Clark/Kal-El is a person who never knew his real father and felt alone in the universe. Now he knows there's another Kryptonian on Earth but once again the boy is growing up without his real father and there's very little Superman can do about it. No matter how much power he has, he's denied the basic things - a family, love etc. This continues much of the themes in Superman II, which Lester glossed over and only really become apparent in the Donner Cut.

Personally I really disliked the way Jason's powers were revealed but the boy's already a killer and if a sequel goes ahead there's a lot they can do with this.

I have to say I'm surprised and pleased to hear how many people want an SR sequel and how negative Millar's comments have been received. I also like the idea of Geoff Johns working on a Superman film and when asked if he would like to do so, he answered with so much more maturity than Millar.

Mark MIller has at least some knowledge about the character, unlike Singer and most of the guys that are posting here.

Wow. Thank for calling some of us as "not having the knowledge about the character" because we like SR or don't share the of Millar. Are you Prof. X or something? :whatever:

I`d still take him over Singer...

So you wouldn't mind Uwe Boll directing too? So many keep wanting almost every directors over Singer. I hope Boll isn't on that list. :oldrazz:

To make matters worse, he turned him into a deadbeat dad and super stalking lurker.

Boy, I love how people continue to call Supes "deadbeat dad", when they don't know what a "deadbeat dad" is. If you know your son exist & don't care about him along with not paying for child support, then you're a deadbeat dad. How the hell can Supes be one when he didn't even know he has a son until the end?!? Exactly. He always assume Richard was the father when he first saw the pic of him & Jason with Lois when he returned to Daily Planet. Supes visting Jason at the end is a sign he isn't a "deadbeat dad" & he is going to be there for him. Keep calling him "deadbeat dad", 'cause you're flat out wrong & that is a fact.

let the man save superman, he's the only one who can

Loeb can't, but Millar can? Nope, sorry. Reading Millar's idea & his rant, he would be terrible. Only one guy can't save Supes, you know? I'm sure there are others there that can save Supes beside Millar, even though I doubt Millar can do it with how he never wrote screenplay before. Same for directing too. Thus, he would be terrible.

Or maybe......just maybe.......the director who contacted him is.....Bryan Singer.

I was going to say, what if Millar wrote the script and Singer directed it? Singer's fine as a director; it was his story concept for SR that was lame, along with the suit-design. But if he's got good material to direct, he directs just fine.

No doubt about it, Welling has a huge fan base.

Welling is fine on Smallville, and I seriously enjoy that show about 50% of the time. The other 50% it's either lame or just okay. Lose about half of its total episodes and you've got yourself a pretty tight, well-produced 4-year series.

The best scenario for me would be to graduate Welling to the big-screen following the Smallville run. Have the final shot of the series be Welling running down the street or through an alley, and he rips open his shirt to reveal the :super: right in front of the camera, and the shot freezes as the credits roll.

On the big-screen, the opening scene revisits that final Smallville scene and we see Welling make his introduction as Superman right off the bat.

Geoff LOVES the Donner-verse as much as Singer does. Just look at all the Donner stuff he's reintroduced to the comics: His Fortress of Solitude looks just like the one from the movies, with the Jor-El Hologram and all. He has made the three Phantom Zone criminals more like the ones from the films, even making their origins match the movies ( with some clever tweaks ) And now that Gary Frank has been drawing Geoff's scripts you'll notice how much more Clark looks and acts like Christopher Reeve and Lois looks like Margot Kidder. He's even given Superman and Lois a son...although in a different way of course. So I'm not sure why you'd think Geoff Johns would have such an issue with SR. In fact, most comics professionals seemed to like SR, it was the comics fanboys who had issues with it.

Millar is a moron... oh wait... frickin' moron.

Millar is going to destroy Superman franchise, especially a reboot. I don't want him to near the movie. EVER.

What are you on about? Singer has already ****ed up the Superman franchise(Movie wise), Although I am not keen on Millar's take on Superman and Lois perhaps with a few adjustments he might be able to strive for something better. Me personally I am just excited someone like Millar is kicking up a fuss about SR and wants the film to be scraped.

I hope not. I loved the timeless feel of the film. They just need to brighten everything up a little bit, like the red on the suit and have more day time scenes, imo. Oh, and have a happier and more confident Superman, which by the end of SR it was pointing towards that direction. He finally found his place in the world and realized that Earth is his real home. Jason was a very important reason for it. Beautiful. :word:

Except he was supposed to realise that as a teen thanks to Ma and Pa Kent.............................gawdddddddddd I hate Superman Returns.:cmad:

Back in 2005 I really wanted a reboot ala BB, but could understand why Singer would not want to do an origin film.

How 'bout a great action pic AND a reboot AND an origin film? Do an adaptation of Mark Waid's Superman: Birthright.

I would have been fine with a better script for SR if they didnt completly **** things up the first time, there are so many problems from that film. Richard, Jason, Supermans Behaviour, Lex Luthor and his land plot.......Returns was just a big pile of turd and some of that turd will have to be carried over to a sequel. Which is why I want a reboot, we simply flush the turd of Superman and start over.

Like SR smallville also comes with its on baggage there is no way they can translate it to the big screen not unless at the end everyone on smallville gets a memory wipe including Clark himself. Smallville at times can be ok but its a TV show and will always be a tv show, although they certainly know how to display some great action scenes.

Millar's take on Superman is right. God forbid that we might get another Singerman movie or a movie that is based on Byrne's Marvelman.

WB, please just green light this puppy already!

NOT THAT ONE!

The problem I had with Superman Returns, was I wanted to see Singer's interpretation of Superman. Instead we got Singer's interpretation of Donner's Superman; the addition of the Jason character isn't going to change the fact that the rest of the movie felt redundant. I was experiencing déjà vu throughout the entire thing.

With that being said, Millar's outline sounds like a flaming heap of crap.

I bet Singer's Superman would wear a leather jacket. And on his first onscreen appearance he would say "What did you expect? Blue spandex?!"

Pleaassseeeee Millar For Superman!!!!

Lets Get Rid Off That Chump Singer And His 1970's Superman!

This Is The 21st Century, Time For Brainiac, Bizzaro Etc.

Because maybe he hopes to have the support of the nerds that hated SR.

I have an advice for Millar. If you want a good amount of geeks behind your project, you have only to say thet you're Superman will be Welling. LOL

:applaud

Singer's Superman = Ice - T
Millar's Superman = Soulja Boy

No I would say Singer's Superman = Vanilla Ice

Millars Superman= Looking like a 50 cent, has potential to be a Tupac.:woot:

I'm well aware of the Donner additives to Johns comics run on Superman, but the characterization of SUperman in SR is just still way off base and ruins anything positive in the film. The film's story is driven by Superman's out of character actions. That's also why I thought Johns would not care for it. Sort of like 'so close, yet so far away.' Those comic professionals are also in the position of knowing they'd never write Superman like that- deadbeat dad, 'baby daddy' storyline, so that might explain why they liked it. However, it's the fans that make or break the films, not the professionals.
