Mark Millar's Many Thoughts On Superman

This is really the Superman movie people want to see? I can see it now: Superman, all alone, talking to a blood-smeared volleyball.
There has been no indication a movie would focus on that. More than likely it'll be a scene at the end of the trilogy.

If WB wants its solo movies to lead up to a Justice League movie, I think they have more members in mind than Superman and Wilson.
All you have to do is say, "I don't like Millar's vision". There's really no need to exaggerate plot points here to further an agenda.

"Further an agenda." You make this stuff sound so important.
I'm obviously having fun with it. Lightening up wouldn't kill you.
If Millar was going to get his version of the movies made, he wouldn't have told his pitch and given away the ending to everyone. End of story.

Fantastic. So there should be no problem then if Millar wants to talk about it, or if people want to discuss the ideas.

Nope. But, I am surprised people want to see a movie that ends with Superman alone on the planet, Lois Lane long dead.

It's not like it's a surprise. Everyone knows Supes is gonna outlive everyone. Just as everybody knows Batman will probably die alone and bitter. It's just something that hasn't been explored too many times.

They're just unspoken facts.

The Sun will last millions of years. Have humans not been able to invent spaceships or any other way to survive in millions of years? At that time we should be as technologically advanced as kryptonians. And Superman didn't use kryptonian technology to help? In millions of years Superman hasn't met other aliens in other planets that could help human kind? Green Lantern Corps? New Gods? Anybody? Are we humans so ******ed that we'll die in this planet because we couldn't find a way to leave it in millions of years, even knowing that there is life in other planets, knowing a super-powerful alien with advanced technology who could help us and surely knows other planets with life, or just inventing something by ourselves? Because colonizing other planets is being studied today in "real life", and in 100 years we passed from riding horses to travel to use rockets to go to the Moon, technology has hugely advanced in around 1 century, so I think that after millions of years we should get something to survive to a dying Sun...(In millions of years we could have an artificial Sun or something similar, we could even not need a Sun at all, who knows).

P.S.-Sorry if my english is not good enough.

Can we focus on one damn film, can we focus on a superman movie everybody likes, and makes alot of money first. If the next movie is good, and makes like Dark Knight money, then I will be more open to a millar trilogy. Focus on getting one movie perfect, and then focus on the next one.
its the same mistake singer made.
and fans again folow it.

insted on focusing 100% on one movie like nolan did this is getting out of hand. and why is he always mentioning LOTF and godfather? because it sounds ''cool'' to fans.

this is IMO baby talk. just because you insert LOTR in an interview that doesnt make your idea epic and good. this is just small talk. maybe hes whole script is really bad.

True. And it is quite inventive of Miller to even consider this. At the very least we are going to be getting some fresh thinking for Superman and that is needed.

It's obvious that Millar was doing an interview promoting the currently-filming Kick-Ass! or the soon-to-be-released-on-DVD Wanted.

This was basically the "juicy" part of said interview. And as I said earlier, the fact that he openly revealed his pitch was basically his way of saying, "They won't hire me. But here's what I wanted to do..."

I just wish Millar did some more Superman work other than Red Son...he claims to be such a fan, but he doesn't do much work on Superman...

Ummm Mark Millar wrote over 20 issues of the Superman Adventures series and they all were awesome. Frankly some of the best Superman comics from the past 15 years.

THat's right, Cain. And Millar cannot work at Superman, because he is signed at Marvel.

THat's right, Cain. And Millar cannot work at Superman, because he is signed at Marvel.

Is he still?

I'm not knowledgable about how contracts work in the movie studio business, so maybe someone can help me: I can understand not working for both Marvel Comics and DC Comics, but does Millar working for the latter man he can't work for Warner Bros. Pictures? Because if I remember correctly, Millar & Gough, the producers of Smallville, also wrote a draft for Spider-Man 2.

I thought it had been said several times that his working for Marvel was an excuse for why he isn't getting the Superman job, but in reality, WB execs just didn't like his pitch.

Granted, I wouldn't want it to be the focus of the story, but what's wrong with showing that aspect of the character? If the franchise is celebrating Superman, why take a look at it?

Umm...I never said there was anything wrong with exploring that aspect of the character. There are better ways to do it than this extreme.

Slow your tone there guy. This dude said this will be the end of this movie be fair based on the fact he didn't say how much time that will take up in a movie. For all you know it's more than likely an epilogue like the LOtR movies had.

Who cares if it's an epilogue? It's an illlogical, inappropriate epilogue for a Superman franchise.

Slow my tone? Is that like "Chillax"?

Abadleon, your English, like your logic, is nearly flawless. You made some damn good points.

Agreed 100%. The second any individual throws in a LOTR reference fanboys start foaming at the mouth.

And it seems so many have forgotten that The Godfather Part III was practically a waste.

Well it'll probably never happen that way now, since he gave the ending of the trilogy away before they even shot the first one. That's a very cool way to end it, but I doubt WB would be fine with "3 Superman movies" and that's it. These movies can go on forever, and WB knows that.

Well, I agree that Warner would not like to finish the story in 3 movies, since it is a franchise that can spread for much more movies and other franchises (like JLA).

BUT... tecnically, they can tell Millar story (Superman begin to the end in 3 movies) and make other movies with stories about what happened during his live, specially "this" time-frame (with Lois, Lex, Daily Planet and Justice League).

One option doesnt necessary exclude the other.

It was good, just not as good as the first two.

if wb can make ahhnuld into mr freeze...they damn sure can give millar a chance.

Is there an eco in here?

How many times can you write the same exact thing MP? You writing this...

...again and again doesn't change the fact that, right now, WB aren't looking to do a sequel to SR and it doesn't make the comment true.

As many as needed. And many people said the same thing about Routh not returning in the role of Superman for the next one.. but now it seems that there is real 'hope', see? Things change, a lot, especially with WB. So, I'll stop until I consider that it is really over, and they are not filming the movie yet, yeah.

LOL. I love how MP keeps bringing up how SR got a 77% on RT like it's such a huge accomplishment. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent score but would you really be bragging if you or your kid got a 77 on a test? :hehe:

MP, there was no need for you to write that since he wasn't bashing the movie.

This is Millar's grand idea that was supposed to redeem Superman from the "Who's Your Daddy?" drama of Superman Returns? WTF?

Granted, I like that he has passion for the character, and a storytelling ambition. That's the polar opposite of the aborted Justice League movie, which just OOZED "Make it fast, make it cheap, and throw in lots of action." But Singer had passion too. Didn't stop him from derailing the Superman franchise for a good half decade (if not more) with his misguided ideas.

Millar's ending is way too bleak, and could very well be pointless. If the third movie shows how the Earth gets depopulated leaving Superman as its last living being, that's horrible and not Superman. Superman is a character of hope, humanity's savior. Just as importantly, he's not Batman and should be fun for all ages. He can't fail like that. Now if the third movie is set primarily in current times, and that last scene is thousands or even millions of years in the future, then it's tacked on and freaking pointless. Also pointless is having Superman born on Krypton thousands of years ago. It's not necessary at all.

The good thing that I see out of this is that there is NO way WB will consent to this idea. They may have allowed Superbaby but even the WB isn't stupid enough to let Superman die old and alone in some desolate post-apocalyptic setting.

I just wish these writers and directors would try to make a good Superman movie, ABOUT Superman. Bring the character back to his roots, show us WHO he is, include all the iconic parts of his universe (Luthor, Lois, Jimmy, etc.), but slightly update things for current times while also making sure not to neglect the action that moviegoers want to see. I want a movie that's true to the spirit of Superman, instead of all these "name" fanboy writers trying to put their stamp on the character by screwing around with the concept.
