Relationship Comedy From David Caspe, Seth Gordon & Jamie Tarses Lands At NBC With Pilot Production Commitment
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: In what is believed to be the biggest commitment for a comedy project so far this development season, Marry Me, a single-camera half-hour from Happy Endings creator David Caspe just landed at NBC. The Sony Pictures TV project, which has Seth Gordon attached to direct and executive produce and Jamie Tarses to executive produce, sparked a bidding war when it was taken out two weeks ago. It ultimately commanded a pilot production commitment in a deal which I hear also includes a full license fee and series penalty. Last summer, NBC nabbed another Sony TV single-camera comedy project with a big commitment, giving a 22-episode order to The Michael J. Fox Show, one of three new Sony series on the NBC schedule next season, along with fall drama The Blacklist and midseason drama The Night Shift.

Said to be in the vein of Mad About You, Marry Me centers on a young couple who get engaged, something they quickly realize is harder than it looks. Caspe, who is writing and exec producing, as well as Gordon and Tarses, are all under overall deals at Sony TV. Marry Me was one of two single-camera comedy pitches about betrothed couples from a top writer and director that hit the marketplace in the past two weeks. The other, The Longest Day, from Cindy Chupack, Jake Kasdan and 20th TV, was preemptively bought by Fox with a pilot production commitment. The comedy market is quickly heating up this year, with three projects already earning pilot production commitments, including 20th TV’s half-hour from Nahnatchka Khan, Nat Faxon & Jim Rash at Fox, and another one, Ali Rushfield’s Stuck from Warner Bros., getting a put pilot commitment at Fox.

For the past three seasons, Caspe, repped by WME, Magnolia Entertainment and Hirsch Wallerstein, served as showrunner on ABC’s underrated comedy Happy Endings, which ended its run in May. Marry Me reunites him with Tarses, who also exec produced Happy Endings through her Fanfare shingle. Gordon, repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment, recently directed the pilot for Sony TV’s upcoming ABC comedy series The Goldbergs.
Yes, yes, yeeeeees. God, I hope there will be Happy Endings castmembers in there...

The concept is so...sitcomy. In a bad way. 'We just got engaged, but merp, relationships are hard. Bring on teh shenanigans. ::laugh track::'.

P.S I've never watched happy endings, I'm just basing this off the concept.

Sounds like Happy Endings but instead of being left at the alter they get married. So just cast all the actors in the same roles. Make it an alternate reality where Alex and Dave get married.

Well, it's a very brief, early description at this point. Plus, comedy is more about execution than concept anyway.

Can't you just let me be negative without any basis for my claims? Gawd sawyer :o

You're opinions belong to me, DS, you should know that by now. :o

cast every single Happy Endings member...Do it

But mix up the characters. Pally and Coupe as the engaged couple, Cuthbert as their lesbian friend, Knighton and Wilson as the married couple and Wayans as the permanently single friend.

On paper, Happy Endings looked a lot like a Friends clone, but in actuality was much more than that. I encourage you to look it up, I think you'll enjoy it.

If Happy Endings could take the "Friends clone" concept in a new direction, then I have high hopes for this show.

Casey Wilson To Star In NBC Comedy Pilot ‘Marry Me’ From ‘Happy Endings’ Creator
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

Happy Endings alumna Casey Wilson has been tapped as the female lead in Marry Me, NBC’s single-camera comedy pilot from Happy Endings creator/showrunner David Caspe, Sony TV and Jamie Tarses’ Fanfare. The project, directed by Seth Gordon, is said to be in the vein of Mad About You and centers on a young couple who get engaged, something they quickly realize is harder than it looks. The casting makes the premise as real as it can be as Wilson and Caspe are engaged in real life. Caspe, who wrote the script, exec produces the pilot with Gordon and Tarses, all under overall deals at Sony TV. This marks Wilson’s second pilot this season. As a writer/producer, she has comedy Mason Twins, also at NBC, a collaboration with her longtime writing partner June Diane Raphael.

Ken Marino To Star In NBC Comedy Pilot ‘Marry Me’
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

Ken Marino is set as the male lead opposite Casey Wilson in Marry Me, NBC’s single-camera comedy pilot from Happy Endings creator/showrunner David Caspe, Sony TV and Jamie Tarses’ Fanfare. The project, directed by Seth Gordon, is said to be in the vein of Mad About You and centers on a young couple (Marino, Wilson) who get engaged, something they quickly realize is harder than it looks. Party Down alum Marino, repped by Principato-Young, recently wrapped the Veronica Mars movie and had a season-long arc on the final season of HBO’s Eastbound & Down. He is writing the features Go The F*** To Sleep with Erica Oyama for Fox 2000 and Return Of The Jocks for 21 Laps and 20th Century Fox. He starred in and directed the popular Yahoo/E! series Burning Love, from Ben Stiller’s Red Hour, and has directed episodes of Super Fun Night and Trophy Wife.

Marry Me centers on longtime couple Annie (Happy Endings' Wilson) and Jake, who get engaged and quickly realize that it's harder than it looks. Marino will play Jake, who is described as patient, funny, kind and a bit of a mama's boy. He hates being the center of attention and has grown a bit too comfortable at his boring cubicle job. The product of a broken home in which his parents always fought, he's uncomfortable expressing emotion and waits too long to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Annie, whom he's been dating for six years. Still, he's head over heels in love with Annie, who brings meaning and excitement to his life. Stunned when she enters into an epic rant on the night he intended to pop the question, Jake asks for some time to recover and plan his next move.

Love that guy.

Pilot News: Scandal Vet to Play Casey Wilson's Dad in NBC's Marry Me Comedy

Scandal‘s Emmy-winning recurring player is heading for some decidedly lighter material.

Dan Bucatinsky — who since Season 1 of ABC’s D.C.-based drama has played do-right, put-upon journo James Novak — will play dad to Happy Endings alum Casey Wilson on NBC’s Marry Me comedy pilot, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Written and executive-produced by Happy Endings‘ David Caspe, the single-camera Marry Me focuses on the challenges encountered by lovebirds Annie and Jake (Wilson and Party Down‘s Ken Marino) after they decide to get engaged.

Bucatinsky’s new gig, which would be a recurring one if Marry Me goes to series, will also find him playing husband to Saturday Night Live alum Tim Meadows.

DAMMIT! I thought it was actually something about the actual Happy Endings. But great news nonetheless.

It makes me sad that this was the NBC comedy trailer that blew me away the least, but then again, the pilot of Happy Endings wasn't half as good as that show ended up being so... hope for the future.

I need to know one thing. Is Eliza Coupe in this?

I wish. She's got a show for USA happening.

All of the cast will have shows this season, Wayans is staying with New Girl. Though they'll likely won't be as good as Happy Endings or get a multi-year run.

NBC
Marry Me - Wilson
One Big Happy - Cuthbert

Fox
New Girl - Wayans
Mindy Project - Pally
Weird Loners - Knighton

USA

Benched - Coupe

Community's cast will also be in a bunch of new pilots next season too.

12 episodes this fall, she plays Nina, a career-driven attorney who has a nervous breakdown and becomes a public defender.

Sounds fun. Is there already a Promo out? I can't find anything.
