Lately, I've been looking through bargain bins picking up anything related to Venom and the black suit b/c of the new film coming out. I saw this in the Spider-Man Wiki article. It says that Marvel Age #12 is the first time Spider-Man's black suit is shown in any form. Always thought it was 252. I bought this off of Ebay the other day for a dollar so I'll see if it's in there. Here's a picture I found on another forum:

Woah, I've never seen that before, although the red is a little Earth X for my taste. Thanks for posting this

Wow....that's pretty cool. I never knew about this...

gotta love the fountain of knowledge that is the hype:)

Well, I dunno...Marvel Age was Marvel's newsletter, if ya will. Can we really count a preview image as the first appearance?

And I guess the red was an early design choice.

Aloha,
Technically yes, but not as a true comic book appearance. We saw the same thing with Iron Spidey.

Awhile back someone told me that the first appearance of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was just an advertisement and that book is worth a bunch of money.

The sketches of Spider-Man's black costume in the comic Marvel Age #12 came out two months before Amazing Spider-Man #252, Marvel Team-Up and Spectacular Spider-Man #90. Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8 came out in December. So, technically the first appearence of the black costume is in Marvel Age #12.

Even though it came out 2 months prior to ASM #252, it's not considered the Black costume's first appearance because it's not an "appearance"... merely sketchwork by Rick Leonardi.

The same argument started a few years ago as to the first appearance of Jesse Custer of Preacher fame...

DC had released a Vertigo preview comic months before Preacher #1 came out, and people started to claim that said preview book was Jesse Custer's first appearance (it merely reprinted a few pages from Preacher #1). People went nuts and started paying big bucks for the preview comic, then reality set in, and Preacher #1 is Jesse Custer's first appearance.

Similarly, people are now looking for a cheap way to make big bucks off the "first appearance" of the Black costume by claiming that it was in a preview book.

The reality is that the Black costume made it's first appearance in the Marvel Universe in ASM #252 (as in when the buying public first saw it in the Marvel Universe), and it's chronological first appearance was in Secret Wars #8.

Marvel Age #12 simply doesn't count...

Just my 2 cents...

:yay:

I don't know if anyone is going to make money off of it. If you look on Ebay I don't even see any copies of it listed. Mile High Comics had a few copies listed on Ebay. Now they're all gone.
