Marvel Television Marvel On Disney Streaming Service (aka Disney +)

What gives me comfort is that Marvel Studios (and Feige) DID take a leadership role in a Marvel TV Series - Agent Carter. And it was excellent. Well, at least it was for the first season.

Agent Carter S1 is one of the single best seasons of any superhero TV ever. That isn't an astronomically high bar, but it's as good as DD in my opinion. Fiege's involvement was drastically needed for the second season which was pretty hard to watch at times.

I can't help but wonder how this is going to effect their movie slate. Are they going to have as many movies as Phase 3? Less, so Fiege can focus on these new series? It's pretty crazy that Fiege laid out the plan 4 years ago and we still don't know what comes next.

These shows seem more geared toward secondary characters who won't get their own movies. I still see 4 films a year happening in the near future. Especially once FOX is their's. Question really becomes, how many of these shows do get a year and how prominent moving forward will Marvel TV be? Or will all of Marvel TV move over to Marvel Studios?

I love the idea for a show for Wanda, but I don't want her to be opposite Vision. I love their relationship, but Wanda needs to be separated from a man for the time being. I'd love to see her and one of the other ladies have something to go together. Hope, Shuri, Valkyrie (I'm assuming Widow is out of the running since she's getting a solo movie)

Report says the shows are for secondary characters or those not getting a movie, so yeah Widow would be out. Valkyrie is a great suggestion. I would like Wanda and Vision to each get their own shows. Shuri is one I didn't consider but would be good. I also nominate Hawkeye or War Machine. Now, you enter interesting terrain with Hope. Does her co-billing with Ant-Man take her out of the running?

I also wonder if Marvel could side step the Hulk distribution issue with a TV show :oldrazz:

The problem is Marvel Studios does a great job with a big budget and a two-year production schedule and a two-hour story. We're in uncharted waters here and the big question is how much money management will give them to do this. If they give them a $10 million budget per series, the most talented people at Marvel Studios will struggle to produce something that rivals the quality of the films.

There's no way the budget is 10 million per series, more like 10 million per episode (same as Game of Thrones and the Star Wars live action series). 10 million can only give you 2 episodes of Gotham or Daredevil, both have budget considered high for TV series (4 million per episode).

10 million per episode for a 6-episode series can work, if they use available production left from the movies and use limited special effects.

Maybe that Noah Hawley Doctor Doom project doesn’t get axed but instead turned into a really cool show on Disney’s Streaming Service?

Noah Hawley is very good with television as we saw with ‘Fargo’ and ‘Legion’. A Doom television show headed by Hawley would be a glorious sight to behold.

At least we know these series will have costumes.

On the Netflix front, all of them are likely getting a 3rd season. We'll see if they flop to Hulu after that. AoS likely ends after next season (maybe 2 more). Not sure how the Freeform thing is going to work.

Iron Fist ain't coming back for a S3. I doubt it lol.

I'm sure shows will still get some TV time on freeform and ABC. Disney still needs to sell those channels to providers. They might move to Hulu or DisneyPlay right after airing, but they'll still have some of those options along with exclusive DP shows.

I don't like the DP acronym btw.

I see them moving to 4 movies per year. One per quarter. Alan Horn had alluded to that awhile back.

We'll see. Reactions to the new season are much more favorable, so I can see it easily squeezing out one more season. Where I would agree is that it is far less of a lock than, say, a 3rd season of Luke Cage is.

There seems to be some confusion about the Marvel/Netflix deal. People in this thread have wondered if those series will continue on as is or wrap up-- the answer is they will continue on to the foreseeable future. The shows do NOT belong to Disney, they are 100% owned by Netflix. Netflix produces each show, not Disney or Marvel--- the characters all belong to Marvel of course but those shows belong to Netflix. Netflix has seen the popularity in those shows and w/Disney soon entering the fray as competition they are doubling down on comicbook adaptations over the next few years. And I read that they don't have any plans to stop producing the Netflix/Marvel shows.\

This actually works for Disney too, because Disney announced their streaming service will be the home of Disney/Marvel properties with a rating of PG-13 and lower, so having those shows on Netflix gives Disney/Marvel more reach. In addition to that once the deal w/Fox is officially done they will be the majority stake holder in Hulu and that will be the destination for all their edgier more adult themed comicbook movies like Deadpool and Logan. The they also have returning shows on regular network tv and cable-- so the future is looking bright. I guess the only real concern is over-saturation at this point...

Actually, Marvel TV produces the shows and comes up with all the story content and such themselves. However, Netflix commissions the shows from Marvel for X number of episodes. They may give some feedback to Marvel and stuff like that, but at the end of the day, Netflix is not hiring a production team or anything to make the shows. Marvel TV does all that.

IF S3 is still rotten. A turd is still a turd even if you shine it.
I would say 3rd season of Luke Cage is definitely not a lock either, for 2 reasons.

1) It hasn't been agreed on. As we get closer to Disney launching their stuff and getting majority of Hulu, I can see them stopping the licensing. There's still time to be agreed on as Punisher S2 is probably Jan/Feb and JJ S3 is probably May or June.
2) Mike Coulton (sp?) is in some deep waters after his tweet about how you shoot your shot when that creepy pastor was molesting Ariana Grande.

I wonder if they can work around some of the rights issues this way, and get a NAMOR series going

t'would be magnificent

That is factually incorrect. The shows do indeed belong to Disney. Netflix has the right to distribute on streaming platforms, presumably for an exclusive period of time until those rights expire as well.

Production companies for the show are Marvel and ABC Studios. Distribution for VoD and DVD/Blu Ray is Buena Vista.

Rumors indicate scripts for a 3rd season were already being commissioned. I bet you they announce its renewal at NYCC. As for IF, it actually has some positive buzz. Rotten score maybe, but overall I think the improved buzz will get it another season. Yes, it's not amazing buzz, but it isn't being called a total disaster anymore. It actually has stuff people want to see. Plus, lower episode count = lower budget. I think there is plenty of incentive.

You are the one in confusuion. marvel funds the shows. They have since 2013. Disney to Spend $200 Million on Marvel Series for Netflix Set to Film in New York

Who counts as a second-tier character seems arbitrary in some cases. They'll have to balance excitement of seeing certain characters in the first place with disappointment they aren't in films (yet?). I don't think I would care either way since I don't see TV as a downgrade like others do.

This is exciting and all, but I want Marvel to announce some animated properties!

According to Reed Hastings, Netflix owns the Marvel shows that air on the streaming service. From Deadline:

“As long as they keep making those shows, they continue on Netflix,” said Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “Our Marvel series that Disney produces for us — we own those shows. They run until we cancel them.”

So while Disney owns the underlying intellectual property for Jessica Jones, Daredevil or Luke Cage, the Netflix shows based on these comic-book characters remain the streaming service’s property. “We get to use them for a very long time,” said Hastings.

I'm curious as to what "a very long time" means. Do the character rights revert at a set point in time or can Netflix keep them on in perpetuity? Do the shows themselves eventually revert and become available for streaming on Hulu or another service? Disney spent over $70B to (in part) unravel bad licensing deals approved by Ike Perlmutter. The Netflix arrangement may be another Marvel deal the Mouse will end up paying for.

Yet another reason I am going to say Iron Fist gets renewed, LOL! This indicates Netflix has no intention of letting these shows go anytime soon. That said, I am okay with it because I love these shows.

Doom needs to be on the big screen.

[Thanks Zarex-- for finding that, I knew I wasn't far off from the truth]

My major point is that the shows belong to Netflix and they can't be taken to another network as is.
